Sexing Baby Budgies
Very interesting thread Kaz. My guesses for baby 3 and 6 were wrong. Looking forward to know the difference between baby 2 and baby 3, they both look similar and also baby 3 cere colour is pale pink, so thought girl. Also got confused with baby 6, since the nostrils were narrow thought it is male and since cere colour was pale pink that made me to rethink as female. Kind request to moderators, I think this thread is very much worth to pin. :fear

Question
Below is a portion taken from FAQ Sexing Budgies Another indicator is the shape; males tend to have a more rounded bulbous cere compared to the females flatter shaped cere. Is this what all you guys are discussing about. Kaz, I was under impression that when the chicks get matured, the shape of the cere gets reversed....as stated above.

Info Needed About Cold Chick/egg
Thanks Neat :fear So more chances of cold chicks is seen when the clutch has only one chick and hen is not sitting on it for more than 30 minutes time. I think this shouldn't be a problem when clutch has more than one chick, since chicks stay together closely and so they can keep warmth together, right. Could you please tell me what is the visual symptoms of a cold chick. So assume for some reason we have to separate the hen for 1 hour from eggs, so whether we can temporarily place a 40 watt house lamp/bulb on top of these eggs at little far away in order to maintain the warmth in eggs during absence of the hen for 1 hour. Also for cold chick, how long we need to provide warmth and any ideas on how to do it?

Raw Chicken Egg Shells
Thanks MB and Liv. So this is what I am planning to do: A) Raw cracked chicken egg shells with membrane: 1) Wash the raw chicken egg shells with membrane in normal tap water. 2) Then boil the raw egg shells in water for 15 or 20 minutes, this will sterilize. 3) Dry this boiled eggs shells in the sun light. 4) Crush this dried egg shells and serve to our birds. B ) Boiled chicken egg shells with membrane: 1) Clean wash the cracked boiled chicken egg shells with membrane in normal tap water. 2) Dry this washed boiled egg shells in the sun light. 3) Crush this dried egg shells and serve to our birds. Does this above two set of steps looks good and if any corrections to be made, please let me know. :fear

Info Needed About Cold Chick/egg
No Kaz and also I don't have plans to do so, but planning to make some personal notes for my future reference and also if it is worth then probably publish it as an article in our BBC FAQ section. But I don't think so I have an option for it since our FAQ Officer is already doing it. Here in my area we don't find any good knowledgeable breeders like over there, but I am really very happy to find this wonderful BBC forum with full of experienced helping members all the time. Actually I wish I should have been over your place. I am happy that atleast this way to very little extent I am helping BBC. Yes, absolutely credit goes to BBC, Moderators and Members, for whatever knowledge I have gained/gaining/going to gain in future. Okay coming back to my actual posted questions regarding cold egg and chick, could you people please help me with the answers.

Raw Chicken Egg Shells
Thanks MB and Liv. I don't have a microwave and as alternative can I dry it in hot sun after clean wash of the cracked raw (not boiled) egg shells. Also after seeing your posts, I understood that we can serve egg shells to birds without removing the inside thin lining/membrane. But I read that we need to remove this membrane before serving to birds. Personally I don't know the reason behind it.

Raw Chicken Egg Shells
Hi Everyone, I have read in few forum posts that we can give boiled crushed chicken egg shells, but whether we can also give crushed raw chicken egg shells after thoroughly washing and dried in hot sun light. Also whether we need to remove the white thin layer inside the chicken egg, I think it is called as membrane. If yes, what is the easiest/simple way to remove this membrane from chicken egg shells. Thanks, Karthik

Info Needed About Cold Chick/egg
Hello Everyone, I have read few posts on the forums regarding cold egg and chicks. Could some one through more light on this to me,..... 1) actually what it is, 2) why and under what all conditions a chick/egg becomes cold state, 3) visually we can make out by seeing whether a egg/chik is cold, 4) any treatments to bring these cold chick/egg back to its normal state, 5) how to avoid, 6) whether is it with in our control or only with parent birds, and 7) can we take any precautionary measures to totally avoid this from happening in first place. Thanks for your reading and time. Sorry for asking too many questions as always I do :party0011:

Bread Crumbles And Sweet Bread Pieces
Whether wholegrain bread is same as wheat bread or is it different? Here in our area we can find sweet wheat bread and salt wheat bread, which one we can serve. What are all soaked seed we can mix with this and also after how many hours do we need to remove the left out soft food from cage, so that it will not become sour. No it is not animal part and what I meant was human eating breads which are sweet in taste. We also get salt in taste breads.

Points To Be Considered Before/while Fostering Chicks
Thanks very much for your imemdiate response Kaz. Assume we have a hen1 with only one chick of age 10 days with NO eggs and another hen2 has 4 chicks with first chick of age 6/8 days. Now whether we can foster one or two chicks from hen2 to hen1. Yes...this would work quite well Whether receiving foster hen1 will not get totally surprised by seeing few new additonal chicks in her nestbox without any eggs....from where these chicks have come etc... Also read in another forum thread that foster parents fed the new forstered chicks for a day or two and then suddenly stops to feed...etc. Why and what are all the necessary precautionary measures we need to take or be aware off before fostering chicks/eggs. Okay let me ask a very very basic question, on what are all occasions do we may need to foster chicks? As far as I know: 1) Sudden death of the parent rearing hen and if cock is not feeding. 2) For some reasons, parents STOPPED feeding the chicks. 3) Too many chicks in the clutch and if we have option of another rearing hen with less number of chicks. That's all I know and other members can feel free to add to the above list to make it complete.
