  1. Thanks to everyone responses. So if my understanding is correct, then plain round wooden perches of different diameters are good to use. Do we any home remedy for bumblefoot. Just curious to know is there any specific reason behind using a square perch in combination to round perches.
  2. Thanks and can we predict/expect this to happen all the time or only when we pair a specific generation of birds of different mutations, in simple under what are all the situations we can expect this crossover to takes place.
  3. Thank you very much Daz. Very curious to know then what is the main difference between these two types - Flight and Aviary and why do we need these two type of cages. Is it not sufficient to have only one type of this cage and mandatory that we should have both. What should be the recommended minimum size of a stock and Nursery cage. Also other than the below type of cages, do we have any other cages: Aviary, Flight, Stock, Nursery, Breeding, Quarantine, Show, Hospital, and Carrying or Transporting.
  4. Sorry I think I haven't posted my initial post correctly. Actually what I was looking for is list of safe natural soft woods which can be given to our birds for chewing and shredding purpose.
  5. Thanks Daz. Can we give sprouted seeds everyday and is that okay or do we have to limit it.
  6. Thanks MB and that looks good idea to have an extra seed dish, will try that. Also what will be the best time (laying eggs or brooding or parents raising chicks or resting...etc) to start giving these new seed varieties to adult birds.
  7. Thanks and I totally agree with you Daz. Actually I was thinking there might be some other best method, so only I have started this topic. Now very happy after seeing your post and so I am in the right track.
  8. I have tried giving my birds with few new seed varieties (Japanese Millet and sunflower), but so far no luck. Method I have used was to mix few of these new seed variety to the regular seed feed. Would like to know what is the best way to introduce new seed varieties to birds. Thanks
  9. Would like to know what are all the varities of sprouted seeds we can feed to our birds and whether feeding them everyday is okay.
  10. What are all natural plant types are good and can be given to birds for chewing
  11. I have read in some article that square perches are recommended, but personally I am curious to know why not round/circular perches, since in nature we have round perches not square. So wanted to know what is the best type of wooden perches and what should be its dimensions. Thanks, Karthik
  12. So far I have come across the following cage types and would like to know actual difference between each of these type of cages - Aviary, Flight, Stock, Holding, Fledgling, Nursery and also if possible what should be the minimum cage dimension of each.
  13. Interested to know more about crossovering and could some one please help me out. Thanks in Advance .
  14. Thanks for your very cute photo and I like that colour. So what will be the genes available in opaline cinnamon variety......is it XoXc.
  15. Congrats Bea and it is very cute photo :budgiedance:
  16. Thanks Throwback and Daz. :budgiedance: So resulting offspring cocks will be looking normal, but split to opaline or cinnamon, is my understanding is correct or something I am getting it totally wrong.
  17. Big Congratulations Kaz  for your new position.
  18. Just trying to understand how genetics works with sex - linked varieties and got this below doubt while reading an article on genetics. What will be the outcome of pairing 2 sex - linked varieties, say for example - opaline cock x cinnamon hen. Per my understanding outcome is as below, notation used for representing opaline gene is Xo and for cinnamon Xc...not sure what is the standard notation to represent them and also hope we should have two same sex - linked genes to get that sex-linked variety (for example, 2 opaline genes resulting in an opaline offspring). XoXo x XcY Resulting offsprings = XoXc, XoY I am not sure whether cinnamon gene or opaline gene is dominant or both genes are co-dominant. Just trying to understand what is the order of dominant genes in sex- linked variety, that is which sex - linked variety gene is more dominant and least dominant one. Thanks for your help as always.
  19. Thank you very much Kaz for your detailed explanation as always.
  20. Thanks Sailorwolf. Cage frame is made of iron and cage mesh is of some sort of steel. Unfortunatley iron perches are higher up than the wooden perches and I think the only best option available as suggested is to cover up with some soft meterial.
  21. Thanks Melbournebudgies and Kaz. Absolutely agree that this may have to do some thing related to weakness or some nutritional deficiency. As for as my knowledge and the local breeders in my area so far I have come across, most of us give only the plain seed of french or panicum millet (still I am not sure what exactly you people call in overseas, picture of this seed variety is attached below) along with Coriander and Spinach greens, Tulsi plant leafs (also known as Holy Basil), few local grass varieties, cuttlefish bone, egg shells and terracotta brick. After I have joined this excellent forum, I have learnt and still learning everyday and started giving my birds with few vegetables, sprouted mung beans and still trying my best to get few seed varities what Daz suggested in one of the threads. Also tried giving Sunflower seeds, softened raw wheat and boiled egg, but so far no luck. Soon going to try with cron on the cob, this we will get it here only on some seasons. Also going to start giving them few liquid supplements of vitamins, B-Complex and calcium. I am not sure whether I am in the right track, so please correct me if I am in the wrong track. Also suggest me if some thing else needs to be taken care along with this which will help birds to stay fit in good health. Kaz could you please tell me, How we can know whether a bird is in really a good health condition? I know this is a very very basic question which every bird owner should be knowing. Thanks, Karthik
  22. Thanks Maesie. I would have been very happy to do that, but unfortunately the problem is that the local breeder what I was mentioning in this start of the thread to whom I have met during my last recent trip to my native home town, where it is difficult to have a computer and net facility in home. So usually it is very difficult for us to use net in my home town. I use net from my working place which is a city, where I currently leave and once a month or so I visit my home town to see my father and birds. Also I have put this in this forum out off my own personal interest and curiosity towards self learning/knowledge purpose .
  23. Okay and is there any specific directions for cooking, also any thing else we need to add to wheat or plain wheat alone is sufficient. Last to last week I tried with mung beans and looks like they liked it very much.
  24. Thanks Neat and Kaz. I think we can give calcium supplement if it was due to lack of calcium I suppose and if it was rickets, what are all the visual symptoms and do we have any treatment for this? Also what all are the preventive steps we have to take to avoid this happening in future?
  25. Thanks Neat and Daz. The problem in india is that so far I haven't found a petshop or Vet medical store having vetafarm products. So I need to look for similar products which I can get easily over here and also that should be obviously the best to birds. Once I come across few equivalent supplement products, will initiate a new thread to get confirmed from all of you experts .
