i know my kids have been opening up the nestbox and looking at the babies even though they have been told not too. could that have upset the hen.i had to go out today and i could not find my heat cord ( have found it now) so i feed the babies and then gave them back to the mother but what i have noticed is that she has feed all but the sick baby while i was away.

i know how to handraise so i will make up mixture and give it to them.i know i should have had more pairs breeding but i was not planning to breed yet but this hen made a nest on the grate of the quarintinee cage. Should i take the babies away from the parents all together or leave them in the nest but feed them myself.

Stupid bird, i went and check them to make sure he was still feeding them and they are chirping and he is now throwing the nesting material out and stopped feeding them, the babies range in age from 15 days to 10 days.

good news, i remove the hen and put the male in and he ran straight into the nestbox and started feeding them.

i have handrearing mix because i handraised my last clutch.Would the male feed them if i put him in and took the hen out, she is not even sitting in the nestbox to keep them warm.

i am having problems still with my hen, i feel i cannot work it out. i took out the male yesterday and this morning i check the babies at 7 am they where chirping and had empty crops and the hen was not in the nestbox. i had to go out this morning and i have come home and it is 10 am and the babies are still chirping with empty crops. What do i do now.Could i take out the hen and put the male with the babies.
  12. the hen has lost weight but no pooey bottom but i have got to the point where i feel that this pair are just not good parents. All the clutches i got from colony breeding where bigger and healthy looking babies and i had no problems with the parents looking after them.i think i am more stressed than the hen.
  13. i am sorry if i have confused anyone, i assumed it was her that was causing the problems so i have been watching them and realised that she is not allowing him to feed her or the babies, he has been trying to mate with her and she seems to be getting annoyed with him and when he goes in the nestbox they start fighting.i do not feel i am interfering too much, i really care about my budgies so i want to make sure that they are 100% happy and healthy. They are not just breeding birds to me but my pets.
  14. would it be okay to put the male into the aviary or should he be by himself for a while. i know hens need to recuperate after having babies before they go back to the main avairy but what about the males.
  15. i was thinking i would have to do that because she is so cranky with him that even when he tries to feed the babies she attacks him. Will she be able to look after the babies by her self.
  16. Thanks for the advice, i will add some millet spray to the box. i add in my another post" hen plucking babies" about the problems with the male. He is getting very annoying this morning.
  17. i wish i had a webcam because then i could work out what is going on in the nestbox because i think it could be the male doing the plucking. Lucky the breeding cabinets are outside my back door because i have had to go out a few times and break up fights between the male and female. He is going into the nestbox and removing the nesting material and trying to mate with her and she is getting cranky so they are fighting in the nestbox. i do not think he is feeding her anymore either because when she comes out of the nestbox all he wants to do is mate with her which is properly why she and the babies are loosing weight. Could the males get jealous of the babies and pluck them.
  18. The mix i have has egg protien powder in it but at the moment i am boiling my fresh eggs i just collected from my hens to add to the budgies vegies this morning.
  19. She is still in breeding condition and she has 4 chicks ranging in age from 14 days to 8 days old . she is not showing any signs of sickness and they get fresh greens every morning.it is my first cabinet breeding so i am worrying about them and properly checking them too often.
  20. There is a site that is aimed at recycling and reducing landfill so you can find stuff there for free.It is www.freecycle.org and you could advertise that you are looking for a door and if anyone has one they do not want they will let you know. i have got some great bargains for free from my freecycle group in my local area.
  21. i am sorry to hassle you guys out with more questions but last night when the hen was out of the nestbox i decided to catch her and check her out and i noticed that she has lost weight, she was in good condition when i put her in the breeding cage. i am giving then egg and biscuit mix that has a protein powder in it but what else could i give her and could someone explain to me why this could be happening when i have been trying to follow all the breeding advice that i have been reading on this forum especially Daz's article which i read other and other again.
