Needs A Mate?
Do you actually think that people that have a caged animals, be it a bird, rabbit, snake, lizard etc... do it 'for kicks'???? These animals (that are sold as pets) are bred and brought up IN A CAGE so to release them in the wild is much more irresponsible than keeping them caged! That being said, I am glad you have seen the error in your ways and will not replace these budgies if they fly away or get killed.

Needs A Mate?
okay..... so you posted back earlier on here that: and then today you post that you bought a new budgie and then set it free to be with the one already on the loose. Doesn't make any sense at all to me. How will you feel if this new budgie gets killed by the other 'nasty bird eating birds' Africa has?!?! I feel really sorry for this new bird

Did you buy a budgie and then set it free to fly with the one already on the loose?

When Will She Lay?
With the large runny poos, it should be long. Try not to disturb them too much as they'll pick up on your nerves/anxiousness.

A Friend For Bogie
People with large aviaries are not the people you need advice from as ours are aviary birds and you need advice re a tamed bird. Please be more patient when waiting for advice. Hi Kaz, Sorry if I seemed impatient. I had also tried asking on another thread and got nothing there either, mostly I just didn't want the thread getting buried. But I think maybe you misunderstood my comment, I was saying I know many on have large aviaries and are therefore not in the best position to advise on my situation, I just figured there would be a few on here with comments. And then there were! :-) I actually saw your thread when you first posted it but because I didn't have specific advice I thought I'd wait to see who else comments. Then when I saw your got no love I felt the need to add what I could. Glad you got some advice and look forward to hearing what you decide.

Scared Of Toys
Does he play with the toys outside of the cage? The same ones? If so, start hanging them/sitting them closer and closer to his cage. Move them a few centimeters at a time. You'll eventually get them hanging on the outside of the cage. Once he's okay with that, sit it on the bottom of his cage and see how he goes... Hopefully you'll slowly be able to get them to hanging up stage in his cage. Does he like millet? You could also trying hanging it in/with the toy too. If he has issues with his reflection, I'd ditch the metal bowls, I wouldn't add the mirror again and probably not a bell, unless you can get a plastic one he can't see himself in. I'd probably start with something small, maybe a ball? Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Its Been A Week...!
Agree... be patient. Also, if you keeping watching them and checking on them, they'll be able to pick up on your tension/stress. Relax, sit back and let them do their business

First Time Breeder
It's great you want to learn about breeding. There is a lot you need to know before you can just put two birds in a cage and expect eggs/chicks. I'd suggest looking through our breeding topics and our FAQ's. Once you get through all of the information found on the forum, then ask the questions you have. It also helps to keep a list of things you want to know on a note pad by the computer and as you find the information you can write it down. Also, just from what you have written above, how big is this 'very large cage' you want to breed two birds in? It sounds like colony breeding and it would be much better to do as you wrote further down... one pair and a nest box PER cage... but again, please read up on the information already here.

A Friend For Bogie
I don't have personal experience introducing a new budgie to a current one that was already tame, but I did have two inside budgies a few years back. While they did sit on my hand and associate with me, they were more bonded with each other. You will most likely lose some of the bond/connection you have with Bogie, but no one can really say how much. There is also always the possibility they wont get along. You'll need to quarantine the new guy/girl (don't think it would make much of a difference either way) for 30 days, and then start the slow introductions. I can't really offer much more advice than this. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Have been following this thread although I have no idea about showing budgies, I do have a question. If a new perch size was brought in, why are you not made to have that perch size? I've noticed a few people say they are glad they haven't changed theirs yet. Were you given a period of time in which to make the changes by? I just remember reading about all the guidelines and if you don't have the proper cage you can't show... thought that may be the same with the perches. Purely curious. Thanks.

Bird Missing Foot
WOW... it's very poor of the previous owner not to know a bird they were selling was missing a foot!!! That aside... if she's had it for awhile and is coping well with her disabilty (as you said) she sounds like she could lead a happy life with you. Kaz, a member of staff has/has had budgie with disabilities so she'll be able to give you more advice, but just make sure you have her cage/aviary set up so she is able to get around okay. They're very adaptable. As to the breeding, I think she'd have a hard time perching and supporting herself while mating... but others may know otherwise. Good on you for keeping her! May she live a long and happy life with you.

What Your Mods And Staff Do Around Here
BUMP for those that need reminding that we mods have a job to do and are not paid for it nor thanked all that often either. We are not here to steal peoples posts or run a dictatorship. We do what we have been asked to do by the nature of our job and due to request by site owner. I was recently chastised by a member due to me moving a misplaced post by a new member. The member being new didnt know where to put his first post as often many new members do not. They generally tack them onto some other topic. Our job, when we find these misplaced first posts is to seperate them out into a new topic where they as new members will be seen and welcomed and answered. I did that as part of my job and was told in no uncertain terms by the member who had started that topic ( where the new member had mistakenly posted ) that my explanation for doing so was bullsh*t amongst other things. These are the things or jobs we moderators and admins do to keep the forum running smoothly and a job we do as we have been asked to do it. We dont do things just to specifically get under anyones skin. It takes a great deal of our personal time and most of it is work done behind scenes. It is very easily for our work to be misconstrued and CRITICISED BUMP BUMP BUMP Please read the above section, AND below!!! If you ever see inflammatory or derogatory posting by a member ....AND it concerns you....hit the report button so we can deal with it. Many times we staff see things that shouldnt be "aired" and make them INVISIBLE until another staff member assesses a situation. No big decisions are made on BBC without all available staff discussing behind scenes and making a united decision. This is the management of BBC not a one person dictatorship. We all have to answer to someone here. Warnings will be issued for repeat "offenders" of bad behaviour. A member may be put on "moderated posting" privileges........this mean they can post but noone can see it until a staff member has approved it to be visible. This moderated posting may be indefinite or temporary. We have a couple of members on moderated posting right now due to complaints about behaviour or posts. We wont tell you who. No member will be automatically deleted on the say so of only one staff member or admin. All available staff members must be involved in decision making about disruptive members where possible. If you ever see a member go "missing" as in no longer here and you have a concern PM staff for an exlanation if required. Dont ever assume we hit the "delete" button for members for minor issues. There is a lot goes on in the background of running a big forum than many realise and we dont take our "punishments" or discipline areas lightly. If someone is deleted it is either at their request or due to long and protracted issues "behind scenes" where the member wont settle down and abuse is constant. I hope this helps in your understandings of how BBC works behind scenes.

Budgerigar Nationals
This is a PUBLIC forum... there is nothing to say that information posted must be 'first hand experience'. (Your 3rd hand stories could also be applied to information handed down through the generations... so what your fathers' father told him about breeding etc... Does that mean we can't post this sort of information to help others?!?!) There is also nothing to say that problems with showing budgies, breeding budgies etc... can't be discussed. Isn't this how we LEARN??? This particular topic is a discussion and as posted in the first post... This is just a curiosity question, hoping for open discussion, ideas, etc.

Sick Budgie :(
So lucky you found her... Firstly I'd bring her inside and keep her in a cage with a lamp over one end for warmth. Make sure she has access to water and seed as normal. Watch her very carefully, and look to see if she's eating (hulled seed) and check her poo also.

Are These okay?
Maybe I'm the only one thinking this... but I don't think you should be keeping him in a TANK... He needs a cage with over head heat, where he can escape from it as needed. The tank will hold the heat and could possibly dehydrate him even further.
-
Are These okay?
I wouldn't be keeping any bird in a tank... A cage with a lamp over it for heat would be a better option... The bread you mentioned sounds yummy too. Hope they enjoy it!

Female Not Staying In Nest
Please stop locking her in the nest box... it's a bad idea. Make sure you have plenty of nesting material in the nest box to keep the baby warm, and when you find it out of the nest box, put it back in.
