Over-weight Budgie?
Have you a photo? A noticeably large crop or breast area, can indicate an issue with crop infection or air sac issues.

Bald Ears Overnight
It's hard to tell if this is an ear infection. Is there yellow crust and/or wetness in or around the ear??

Hot Days Are With Us Already!
Thanks Renee, I am not happy at all about the weather at the moment. This morning was a chilly 10 degrees and the birds were shaking in their pantaloons! Tomorrow will be 41 and Thursday will be 43!!!!!!!! Am bracing the birds as best i can. There really is not much else i can do without an A/c - everywhere is sold out mmm let me make more of these they are cooling just looking at them :raincloud: :raincloud: :raincloud: :raincloud: :raincloud: :raincloud:

Cordial
I agree, no good for worms. I use it sometimes when the birds might be under stress conditions or if a sick bird needs a boost of energy etc

Building Materials
Use untreated wood in the areas the birds can access or chew on, or you can use treated wood if it can not be accessed by the birds. Treated wood is better to use if the wood will be touching the ground etc to stop rot and termites. treated wood is toxic so ensure the birds can not chew it. Use aviary wire from the hardware store. You can get it in rolls or by the meter depending on where you shop. Zink aviary wire (the norm) needs to be washed before use with vinegar and scrubbed to ensure birds don't get zink poisoning. Use acrylic paints only. Oil or enamel paints are toxic.

My Aviary....start To Finish
Many of the breeders in the UK have their internal aviaries built of glass so they have a really good view of their amazing birds. the birds soon get used to the glass and wont fly into it

Breeding Pairs 2009
I am so sorry about your losses  It shouldn't be the heat unless it got excruciatingly hot with no water in there, which i would doubt considering all your precautions etc. Here in SA we are in the middle of a heatwave and so far we have had over 7 days straight of 40+ degrees. The bird room has been up as high as 45 degrees. The birds are hot, but doing fine. *Touches wood* :fingerscrossed: I hope you have no more loss, but don't let the hot weather put you off, as everyone i have spoken to says the hot weather brings far better breeding results than cold weather. :hap:

Hot Days Are With Us Already!
I have to agree. I dont give ice in the water, but i do give refrigerated and frozen food sometimes with no issues at all

Hot Days Are With Us Already!
So water coolers are okay? I was told that because birds don't sweat it was of no use unless it actually cooled down the room??? would love to know about this as i will try get one if they are effective

Hot Days Are With Us Already!
Here it has been above 37 since Sunday, and it was 40 yesterday and creeping up to 42 by Friday and maintaining the heat until Monday where it will be a cool 32. Because birds dont sweat like we do, fans and evaporative air conditioners are of little value. My birds get hot, and i just leave them alone. they have large dishes of water on the floor of the flights, so they can sit around it and bathe in it if they want to. In the bird room i have it completely open and shade sail over as much of it i can. I have a small fan on to ensure the air keeps moving, but have to be careful with a fan as it can have a fan forced oven effect, actually making them hotter!! I have all the cabinets on the floor and no more than 2 high. Each cabinet has an open dish of water and i leave the nest box doors ajar for added air flow for the chicks... Other than that i do nothing but keep an eye on them. Check water levels and make sure they always have lots of fresh water. I try to ensure they are not disturbed in the hottest parts of the day and when on the ground.
