  1. I lost flame last night, she was one of my original one... I am numb. I have broken down three times today and cried till I felt sick and it's only 9.30... At the moment Lemon is sitting on flames last set of eggs so I really hope they hatch. She was the BEST mother that you could ever want. She did not care who you put under her. I even pulled her from the avairy once and stuck her in a breeding box with Blue and gave her two 3 day old chicks, 5 mins later she is eating oats like they where going out of fashion and then about 3 hours later both bubs where full to the brim. I am really thinking that I might just give away bird breeding all together it just hurts to much....
  2. You have to make sure you get the non UV ones. There are two types. Ones that throw UV and others that don't and you use them at night to that they don't throw light only heat. Sometime they are a little harder to find but a good reptile shop should be able to sell them to you, the other option is to go for the blue ones which I don't think you can get a UV one of them so you are sure to be safe
  3. The other trick is to go to a pet shop and get some of the heat globes they have. If you get the smallest watt ones then you should be right with birds. I have the reptile ones for my guys that are blue and throw as much heat as the normal light globes if not a little bit more. ETA - the blue or the black ones are great as they produce heat but not light so much meaning the bird can get some shut eye at night without the strong light on them
  4. I am thinking that I might take my green cheeks, love birds and Budgies that I have for sale to this but not sure if it is worth it... thinking thinking
  5. well one of the bubs got rejected from his mum and has splayed legs so i had to get over my crop feeding phobia and deal with him as well. thanks to Kaz's thread on splayed leggs he now has a sponge split!
  6. There is a bird auction/sale on the 25th at Bundoora I think need to find out the informaiton and will PM you with it once I know
  7. Well I tracked one down crop feed her last night and then spent the night freaking out that I had put air in her crop! I am 99% sure that i did not but it's always my fear that I would have and I hate crop feeding but will do it again tonight
  8. Well flame just keeps losing weight there is nothing to her, I have seen her look like she is eating but I am not sure that is is in fact eating so I am decided to crop feed her. went to get my crop need and the frelling thing will not stay on the end of anything that I have! So I have been calling places all day today trying to find a crop needle but unless I want to drive to whoop whoop or wait 3 - 10 days for postage no luck, then I stumbled across a bird boarding place that has some in stock so going to go there in about 40 mins and get a 14 gauge one and try and get some handraising mix down her tonight. Poor girl is just skin and bones and I am worried sick about her.
  9. They may not like them cold? I have a few birds that will not eat fridge cold veggies and I need to get the veggie to room temp for them. I have another set of birds that will only eat veggies if they are frozen. Really depends on the bird, as Elly said just watch for Bac growth if left out to long
  10. We lost a few more, Cotton Candy was one of them (So sorry GB) but I am really hoping that is it. I am worried about Flame as there is nothing to her but then again she is a tiny bird anyway. Really thinking that I am going to have to crop feed her but I am not 100% about crop feeding, I know how to do it and I have done it but I avoid it if I can. I just wish she would put on some weight!
  11. I have ust been through this with my birds. Lucky we know what is causing it. We have one hen that never got sick, showed no signs of illness all through quarantine about 5 days after we put her with the rest of the flock everyone got sick, she is what the vet called carrier, has the diease but does not get sick from it and passes it onto other birds. Having said that the vet also said that she may get sick later down the track had we not gotten to her with meds. What you are talking about sounds like Cankers as it sounds the same as what Harley was doing when he first got sick. I would make sure he is warm and eating and just keep in contact with the vet. If they have asked you to give him meds then make sure you are giving them to him via the beak and not relying on the mix in the water as Udgies are stubbon and don't drink sometimes. Also one trick is that if you have the heat lamp ondon't turn it off at night so that bird can sleep, they will sleep with the light on and that way you keep the temp up there for them, my vet says that alot of times people feel sorry for the bird and turn the lamp off at night and cover them the temp drops and bird dies. You are better to cover them and turn the lamp off in the middle of the day when the house is warm for a few hours and let them get rest then. Also make sure you are feeding easy to eat seeds nothing to hard for him to crack, I know that people say hulled oats are the best I find my sick guys will go for them first before eating anything else.
  12. Did they do poo smears and a crop flush? Did you see a regular vet or an aviarn vet? The gasping could be cankers.
  13. Kaz some are on Baycox an some are one Bactrim. The ones on Bactrim are one .2 twice a day for 7 days and then two days on the Baycox once a day. Those on Baycox are on .2 once a day for 3 days then 5 days off then 2 days on then 5 days off and then monthly for 2 days untill all the meds are gone.
  14. renee not going to add anything to her cocktail untill i have spoken to the vet, any vet, bloody recorded messages
  15. I would just ivermetin her and let her go, i am assuming it is a mild case so it will clear up in about a week and she should be fine. I would also treat the cock to make sure he does not get it
  16. Thanks SW. It was strange she did not have the funny colour poo at lunch time yesterday but last night it appeared and then we cleaned her up and was not present today. I would split her off but she is in with Blue and he is feeding her a little so I want to leave her there as I don't think she is eating by herself. Will get getting a crop tube/needle later today and will start feeding her handrising mix so she gets both food and water with that. I have a wire grill on the bottom of the cage and that gets cleaned out twice a day Her cage is on Bactrim to the mouth twice a day for 7 days, the other guys are on Baycox once a day to the mouth 3 days on 5 days off, 2 days on, 5 days off, 2 days on, then once a month for 2 days untill I have used all the meds. I also have some Doxy. I am thinking I might give her some Doxy or some of the Baycox as well as the Bactrim but i need to get ahold of the vet and so far today all I get is answering machines!
  17. today was going well untill one of the guys on the agressive treatment started to get red/black poo now I am worried again she really does not look that good, figure I am going to have to find something open tomorrow and start crop feeding her to get some weight back on her. Harley looks well. Oh and GB Cotton Candy is looking good, still a little under the weather, vet says that she would keep him on treatment with my other guys for 3 months and give him another month before sending him your way and then for you to quarantine. I will get him vet checked.
  18. SW I was always on the no antibiotics and just good husbanty but now after having used that as my quarantine practise and ended up with half of my resting flock dead and some of my very perious babaies sick I am now thinking that I should add antibiotics into my quarantine process.
  19. Thanks guy, sorry Macka but I am 99.9% sure I know where the virus has come from. I am not prepared to kill the rest of the birds. I have a bunch that cost me alot and are now starting to look better. I am prepared to continue to medicate those remaining. I know that I might sound like a bleeding heart but if I had to kil the remaining of the flock that would be it for me I would get out of Budgies altogether. I will always give my Budgies the best chance they can get to survive. I know what they have, I know how to treat it and that is what I will do. I will continue to treat them, I know that I might have gotten to a few a little to late but the rest should be okay.
  20. Just want to add to this. We quarantined and no birds showed signs of illness and we added to the flock, a few weeks later we have the fly dropping issue. I can not recommend strongly enough to dose your birds while in Quarantine i am going to get Doxycycline from the vet and all birds will now get one dose via the mouth direct and then 45 days of water treatment before they go anywhere near my flock!
  21. another passed away in my hands last night and then I lost 5 more today..... I just feel sick, the only think that I can be slightly thankful for is that there is not signs of this in my breeding room or in the birds still in quarantine or with the young bubs that have just fledged. These are the best birds we have so the ones we are losing it is really sad but not as bad as it could be. Also Harley is looking better not 100% but better However on another note, we think a mouse got into one of the nest boxes and ate the "to hatch any day now" eggs of one of our pairs *cries again* it's so bad when you find the remains of the tiny little babies and mouse poo, so traps getting set everywhere tomorrow!
  22. Yes they where from a well known breeder near us. In fact the pet shop ones are the ones that are holding up at the moment!
  23. Alot of breeders near me say that Crested and the pied are the hardest as they are just plain smaller then most other mutations
  24. Yes we did bring in some new ones and we did quarantine but they are the ones that I have lost. Vet thinks they are the cause of the whole thing as the new ones have been the hardest hit.
  25. No Harley at 9 years of age have never had an issue outside of stress molting which I had him on birdy prozac for, heck he has never even had worms! the vet kept telling me, 'At 9 I ams suprised that he has all of these and is still kicking, you sure he is 9?" He is a tough old bird he will pull through!
