  1. I looked at the feet, and they are tiny. I ringed one, but if it comes off, i will do it again. I would rather be early than late. I have put some extra seed in there, and I think feeding will be fine. The chicks can be 8 to 10 days old & the rings will still fit, with out to much trouble. You would't put a ring on your own finger that was loose & could slip off.
  2. Renee & anyone else that is preocpied with dosing there birds up with meds, you are not leting your birds build up an amunity to these problems. All you need to be doing is worm the birds & treat for external problems & you will not have the problems, you think you have.I can only speak for the breeders I know & they stoped treating for all those problems, years ago.
  3. If they are split rings Finnei, time is not a problem, wait till there a couple of weeks old & there legs are stronger & longer, give you more leg to play with.
  4. If that photo is today Dave,I would t be panic to put the rings on,big chance of the falling off. If they are a good feeders they will look after them.
  5. By the photo's it looks to be a good set up.
  6. Finni,I will say this for you,you are a quick learner. Yes the good auction will only allow the year before ring & the currant ring, & the $5 dollars,if they don't sell, to keep the rubbish out.
  7. I wasnt too happy about that either............wont encourage others to be offering birds next auction, will it ? I anticipate that the $5 fee for unsold birds will not be repeated next year ... I would be surprised if it wasn't repeated Renee. When it comes down to it a club has to run functions at least at break even. Without bird entries to cover the cost, the cost has to be recovered comehow whether people sell birds or not. What I anticipate is either NO written auction or far fewer birds. Way too many birds was the issue. We initially had 40-50 birds lined up and then suddenly that was not going to be enough so everyone was asked if they would like to put in more. The more ended up being about double that - too many and too many elderly offerings. Also the fee tends to keep some people from putting in complete rubbish so it keeps sellers honest and helps buyers get a better selection. Just like the minimum reserve at normal auctions, you still pay 10% or $5 if the bird is passed in........ makes you think a bit more about what you are going to offer for sale (or it should!!!!!). Personally I would never pay even $50 for 4-5 year old bird no matter how good it looked as the chances are it's not going to breed for you - especially when you consider the change in environment that it has to adapt too. Some birds take 12 months to get over that and breed happily and with an old bird you just can't afford to give it 12 months to settle. Nor would I put in anything I did not consider was worth paying $50 for - myself. If I think a bird is worth that, THEN I put it in. The removal of the $5 fee is a big backwards step for buyers AND the club. I missed this post,it would of saved me a lot of finger tapping, birds in a auction that no one wanted for $5.00 You can only buy so many birds & at the $5 dollars or the reserve the people put on t5hem they did't sell. That $5.00 fee they place on the birds that don't sell,is to stop people putting in birds, that people wont buy.
  8. Gee Iam glad someone come on here & stated what happens in the real world, with culled birds,You talk about other breeder buying these lesses birds(culls pets) there is up to 15( people)breeders will look these birds over & if they pull 1or2 out & take them home, that would be the limit, mind you there are birds in the there that look okay. But they don't lay, fill eggs,on the pension or some other defect. The local pet shops will only take so many & the worst part about it is,its usely the back yard breeder, that have the contract with the pet shop,to supply birds to them,You hit the nail on the head GB,The bloke selling his violets, because they are the pretty birds & that is why the bird dealer will pay upto $6.50 for the coloured birds.Anyway I have now had a couple of show breeders come on here & state that its not that easy to sell the cull birds,I can rest easy,it just took a little while, to get the point across.Any way I think I took this subject off topic & that was, what do pet shops do with birds that don;t sell. They vanish into the blue yonder.
  9. If you go to the standards book it has the standard size for a budgie & all the the other standards. But like all things, people interput the standard through there eyes.
  10. Iam talking culls, these are birds,no breeder, wants. We run 3 sales a year at the Sunday Market, well I should say our club rooms are on the Show grounds were the Sunday Market is so we have a good pass trade & the birds are on display & 2 to a cage, & they can't be over 12months & the minimum price is $15 up to $25 & I would say the sale before Christmas, witch is the best sale & there would be 40birds on show. The pretty one sell like hot cakes, up to$20 & the rest go to the bird man on the Monday night & they are the greens greys & the ones that are $25. PS Is there any other show breeders on here & how do they sell there culls(rubbish)Iam not talking birds that can be used for breeding.
  11. I hope it can't come in on you Kaz & it is ferther away then it looks.
  12. Yes GB you sell to pet shop But how many birds do you sell to them at a time.If you are talking 1or 2 at a time & you have 20 birds to move, you still have 18.Now the pet shop will take young birds, But old birds,no.My point is the local pet shops will not handle, the amount of birds, the club culls each quarter,I myself sell my young birds at the chook auction, $5 to $10 but most in the $5---$6
  13. Kaz the amount of food you feed your birds. Iam surprised they eat any seed at all, by the photoes of all the goods & soft food, they get. There would have to be,something they don't eat
  14. Just how many birds do you people sell to the pet shop, that you can get,the money you say or are you the only person in the area selling budgie's to the petshop,as I said in another post, our club sell 2 to 400 budgies each quarter to the bird dearler & the pet shops in the Geelong area will pay you $ 5.00 for the odd young bird & the back yard boys have the market corned any way.into the pet shops in the area. I don't sell any birds direct from my place, you only attracting unwanted people to your home, its not worth the hassle..
  15. Well I guess if you have 6 budgie, you could wipe each leaf before you feed them.No wonder some people birds get sick & die,if they live in that sterile inviroment. The birds would have on antibodys useing bleach like that.
  16. You will have to watch that Dom Pie,his 3rd toe is turned back As I have said before,Kaz some have make the #W.A team this year.
  17. I guess you did't google it. It jumps out of the page. I think one of the clubs in Melbourne, were behind the mix called Avigrain Blue.I do know of breeders that have 1% oats in there mix.
  18. The one thing every one can do is breed champions on paper, only if it was that easy.It will be interesting GB,to see the results from your pairing. In this months NSW budgie Mag, they have printed an interview with Henery George.I have'nt read it so to speak,as it only come today.
  19. In my opinion,if she has 7eggs & say 5are fertile, she will cover the 5 better if the 2 clear are removed,as you can see in the photo, one is fertile & the other is not,now the clear one may be last egg layed. If you get my drift. But if it is 3day since she last layed it is clear.
  20. macka replied to renee's topic in New to BBC
There is a least 60 birds in the pen,as a long as they have a bit of flying space they should be okay.
  21. Have you checked the eggs to see if they are fertile
  22. GB I think you would make a good politican. :D
  23. You lot make me laugh, whats wrong with just saying they are blue bird or a green bird. Do they have to be split for violet or what ever & most of the birds that are this or that are only pet breed birds, show bird would't have such a mixed back ground, that you did't know if they are Arther or Marther in the colour stakes. :emoticon112:
  24. You have scrubbed up well Splat :emoticon112: * & congratulation all round.
