New Avairy
It is really good that you are back Daz because I have really missed you. So if you had the year off does that mean you haven't bred many birds then.

My 2011 Breeding Journal
I thought it was the seed because I tried to sprout some and only half of it sprouted , and the birds were emptying the jars out over night, What I have done is use different seed and I have been giving the aviary birds the other seed. But Geoff said it wouldn't be the seed as he bought the same seed I bought at the same time and he is having no problems. But I really thought my birds were hungry all the time. My birds get a soft food mix in the morning and the ones with chicks get it at night also. Anyway I have now put my birds on tank water, they were on town water. Once I buy a kettle they will be weaned onto boiled water and see how that goes. I am still loosing chicks. My lutino nest hatched one the first one the other day and it died stuck to the shell, then other hatched the day after it is a lutino chick well it is still alive and then 4 days later another hatched in the morning and dead in the arvo and the last chick hatched that avro and lived 2 days, dead this morning, the last 2 chicks had empty crops, the one that died this morning was doing well and then the hen just stopped feeding it and I had nowhere to foster it, both these chicks were splits. And they did not have yellow belly. So I do not get it.

My Little Kitchen Area
I know I am lucky and I just love it, Hey Finnie the bar fridge has been on my mind but I don't really think I would get away with that because the power bills are getting bigger I think Greg would put his foot down there, BUT on the same note I think he would love because the bottom of the fridge and part of the door is full of bird meds and he is always saying I hope the grand kids don't touch them so it probably be easy to talk him into it but the power thing would put him off.

Thanks Pride, it only took me 5 years, each year getting bigger and bigger until I got my new room last year. So it all takes time. You will get there.

Could This Be A Problem?
Sounds like yellow belly, do you have any moxti T, That is what I give to the parents. This is taken from Rob Marshall Any condition that weakens the embryo predispose that baby budgerigar to yellow bellow infection. yellow belly is an infection of the yolk sac killing one to three day old chicks. strep ( Enterococcus Faecalis) infection is the most common bacteria associated with yellow belly in budgies. Moxi t is the best treatment foe nest with yellow belly infection. The identification and elimination of what causes the failure of the baby to absorb the yolk sac is however the only way to completely eradicate this complex and poorly understood disease. Excessive dust levels accumulate in he breeding room and cabinets are a common cause of the spread of teh disease from cabinet to cabinet. French Moult and Strep infection often appear together in dusty aviaries.

Cracked Egg
That's what I think to Kaz, I have never got a live chick from an egg that has a crack blood has come out.

Clearwing Spangle?
It looks cinnamon to me, what are the parents? It could also be a bad variety marked spangle, I have bred a few of them in the past. But your bird looks faded in colour so I would say cinnamon spangle

My Little Kitchen Area
I love my little kitchen Maddy, just love it. It is much better than walking up to the house every five seconds getting water etc. Today I went to the op shop and bought a big old saucepan with a lid to boil water and a small saucepan to boil eggs. I took my little portable barbeque out their and boiled the saucepan of water to wash my dishes because the cold water was to cold for my hands. so cool. Monday I will buy the kettle and smuggle it out there too, lol Greg will never know. But I did tell him before how much I love my kitchen and that I bought a sauce and used my barbe to boil water and guess what he did, rolled his eyes. I am also buying lino for my breeding room floor because I am sick of dropping my little saucer on the floor and they just smash up, no second chances on concrete. But I will have to wait until I finish breeding this year before I can lay it, drat I want it down now. But I found one I like and I think it will look good on the floor. It's good everything is coming together and all I need now is for my birds to breed for me ( fertile eggs and chicks that live) I am sick of the problems I am having.

My 2011 Breeding Journal
I am already sick of cleaning all those cages lol, I actually do it over 2 days, 1 side one day and the side then next day, the middle ones get done when I do the wire cage side because there is less cages on that side. But yes it is a big job. Robyn the radio is for me mainly but the birds like it too. It is that noisy in there I can't here myself think. I Have to tell them to shut up for a minute or two, lol it works.

Thanks Maddy I had to put it in there, it was in the old room, so to make it fit in the new one I had to turn it upside down so the doors slide open the way I want them to, but the only problem is I put that other cage up there yesterday for the babies to into and now the door can't slide open but I don't expect to win any trophies anytime soon. LOL But I am very proud of the ones I have.

My Little Kitchen Area
Yes it's great Finnie, Greg is happy too, he has the wash house back lol. so now that I have moved out of the wash house he is going to paint it on the week end. My new little kitchen is only a couple of steps are from my new birdroom, so it is so much easier than walking up to the house all the time. I just need to by an electric kettle now to sneak out there and use. lol. I have my food processor out there already. I have one of those portable barbeques that I reckon will be okay out there, so I need a saucepan too so I can boil my eggs. lol Very cool, Greg will never know what I am up to.lol

My Little Kitchen Area
I have just completed my little kitchen area. It is not inside my bird room but next door in the first part of the old bird room. Just put the tiles on The drain area out side It is working great now but up till yesterday it was ****, on the outside I had grey water hose coming off it and so the water was running out to slow, actually hardly at all, the sink was full of water, hated it so I went up to the hardware store and got some of this plumbers pipe and voila all is great now. Love it. Just got a few finishing touches like putting the power out on the wall but it is annoying because the cord comes out the wrong way.

My 2011 Breeding Journal
lol sorry fixed that mistake. anyway I WISH. But last year he through me about 20 or so chicks and most of them are still here. he is such a good boy, but this year he is a bit slow off the mark but at least he is starting to do his job. Just through out 3 nest with clear eggs, so annoying.

My 2011 Breeding Journal
Gee sounds like Gb and Maddy are having a bad run too. Hey guys now that it is starting to warm up a pit things might improve. well that's what I am hoping any way. Yes I am happy with what I have, there are some good birds there. Well i was getting excited yesterday because most nest have eggs now and my violet has 4 fertile so I was over the moon but then I had to remember fertile eggs mean nothing because the have to hatch and survive, so I am just taking one day at a time.

Extra Foods To Help Breeding Pairs
I just use feeder oats (normal oats) with the husk still on, heaps cheaper. I soak the feeder oats for part my soft food for breeding birds and I put unsoaked feeder oats in the aviary for all birds but only in the colds months because oats will make your birds over weight if you are not careful.

Extra Foods To Help Breeding Pairs
You can ever soak seed like oats over night or just put unsoaked oats in the aviary which is the easiest.
