What A Night Mare
Last night was a nightmare, We have a dog called buffy and she never lets a cat in the yard but last night she spent the night at Lisa's and and the worst happened a rotten cat came over the fence and onto the aviary scaring the crapp out of the birds . Thank god they are all fine but 3 can't fly any more well not at the moment they might of just bruised their wing but seemed to have hurt their wingThe worst thing is one is my best violet the one I got 1at for at the shield and the other 2 are 2 that GB wanted. I guess I will have to keep them for breeding now as she won't want birds that can't fly and 3 of them are really nice birds too. I just hope I can still show the violet because i am devasted about it.

Doing A Course
SOME PEOPLE only try to take advantage of you. That phone call I got last week was from a pet shop so off I went yesterday for my interview and when I got there I asked for the 2 people I was ment to but it was the wrong shop ,now I am thinking how could this be as I only sent a letter to only 1 pet shop so off I drive home 95ks round trip for nothing. Anyway when I got home I rang the number on my mobile phone and sked if these people were there and yep sure as the women I was after had answered the phone I explained to her what had happened and she sounded very shitty as she had been waiting for me to turn up for 2 hours, Anyway I apoliged and made another appointment for Mondat next week. But I am still confused as to how my letter made it's way there as I do not like that pet shop. Today while I was at work I got a phone call from the pet shop that I went to yesterday the one I wanted to work at and they explained to me that the women from the other pet shop is a vet nurse at one of the vet clinics I applied at she was very sneaky and took my details to her pet shop that her and her husband own and rang me offering a placement. What a cheek any thing for free labor, Anyway the the pet I want to work at offered me a placement and actually I think a job as someone is leaving So end the end going to the wrong per shop paid off. Oh and they did get my letter but hadn't had time to process it. So I came home today and rang the dodgy pet shop and told them I wasn't interested as I never did send a letter to them.

Freezing Soft Food
I really don't like freezing food like that as I think fresh is best, considering a bird can get sick so easily from tainted food. I make up my powder mix and keep it separate and dry from the rest and each morning I grate carrot and greens into their soaked oats along with my special powder food. I always take it away within 3 hours of them getting it as it can spoil so easily specially on hot days bacteria sets in. I find when I freeze any veges it seems to be soaker plus I believe there are more vitamins in fresh food. At night each breeding cage get a 1/4 piece of whole meal bread and they go nuts over it. The aviaries get a whole piece or 2 depending how many birds are in it. That's my opinion only

Blue Birds
Macka, there's not just one simple answer to this. Firstly distinguishing between Cobalts and Violet Sky's is difficult for some people, especially those newer to the hobby. Secondly, and probably most importantly, almost all of us reading this forum have probably not had their monitor professionally calibrated to accurately reflect true colour. The colour you view on your monitor varies depending upon what ambient light you're viewing the monitor in. My wife is a photographer and does a lot of Photoshop work. Her work area is under artificial "natural" lighting so that her results are consistent. For most of us, viewing the same picture in daylight and again under night lighting will drastically alter the colour, but generally we don't care. Next, most on here are probably amatuer photographers at best (myself included) and find some of the finer adjustments on their camera a bit daunting. Below is a picture I took at our show in June with what was then another brand new camera (I have a personal problem with buying new cameras, but I'll get help I swear ). The area of the hall where this bird was situated was a mix of daylight and flourescent lighting. Both the Auto White Balance and my attempt at manually correcting this in-camera failed. The result is a fantastic coloured Violet! In the second picture I've done a quick colour correction using a VERY basic editing program at work with the result being that on MY monitor it looks closer to how it was on the day. See the difference? It is for this reason that I rarely comment on posts asking exactly what colour a bird may be as there is just too much variance between monitors and lighting conditions and camera settings. As an example, I have the Greywing picture of Kaz's displayed simultaneously on 2 monitors right now. On the first I can see a slight Violet wash on the body colour. On the second it looks just like a standard Sky colour to me. By The Way, it's a pretty fair Violet above. Not mine unfortunately. I totally agree with Daryl as a use to be photographer and have a diploma in graphic arts I know my colours and my monitor never tells me the truth put me in a dark room and I am a genius, that's why I never comment much on color either, when I post photos of my violets that never really look violet on the computer but in real life they are vibrant.

Converted Armoire
I love what a great idea I wnet to the local tip and got a nice bid book shelf that I converted into breeding cages. It looks great for free. The guy at the dip was a friend and if anything came in thta was suitable he would save it for me also I got a wonderful TV unit but I destroyed it (cut the top off) I use it under my breeding cages as it's so perfect because there are 3 cupboards in it for storage. He also saved me a huge piece of perspex (can't spell) for my hospital cages which saved me heaps.

Blue Birds
I have a cobalt spangle that is violet bred he is much richer in colour than a cobalt but I class him as a cobalt but from now on Macka i will say his is violet bred even my greens are violet bred they are between Lt green and Dk green in colour.

Blue Birds
When Macka said down the line I think he meant that even though they are visual violet which is what the class is not sky violet or green violet or any other what ever, is that most violets are small in size and lack substance, head, body shoulder and the works. PLUS patchy. IS THIS RIGHT MACKA but my violets are are pretty good for a beginner anyway but I do need to build up their chest and shoulder at least that's what I think, their size, head and feather and colour is very good fall away a bit in the body. Crikey I am learning as I am criticizing my own birds on cyper space

Microscope
I bought a kids one last year and it was nasty and cheap, resold it on ebay so this time I want a decent one so I will hold till I find the one I want, am interested in Kaz's but still waiting.

Hen Abandoned Eggs
I agree too as the more you check and the more she gets a fright she may puncture the eggs when she jumps up and then they will no goo. I always leave my alone for a 10 days or so and then when I do check I always knock on the door to let her know that I am checking so they don't get a big fright and bounce off the eggs spreading them everywhere.

Microscope
Kaz what make is it and that write up blurb didn't say if it was a compound one or not, did you find it good. My lab top had vista on it and it was a pain in the bum so I send it to the computer guy and he has put windows on It for me haven't picked it up yet. My research has told me that I need a compound microscope biology type one and I kinda want a Mechanical Stage but I will see as they are very expensive and I can't touch my bird money as I am saving.
