My Spangle Line
Her markings dont look cinnamon Splat...they kinda look greyish :raincloud: Wonky leg or not, I'd love to see her in my aviary any day :raincloud: She is cinnamon Kaz because I don't have any greywings yet. It must be the screen and the photographer :raincloud: :raincloud: Yes Kaz she is cinnamon as I don't have any grey wings yet, she has turned out to be a real sweety. and I am lucky she is a hen because of her wonky leg at least she can still mate. She is doing wonderfull she is running around on her leg and flying in the nappy cage. I only took her from her parents yesterday and she is about 71/2 weeks old. They have eggs ready to hatch but they didn't mind her staying with them at all. GREAT parents. Your white Df spangle has 2 babies so far. He is in the aviary but he was in the breeding cage until 2 weeks ago. So he is definetly fertile :raincloud: 4 eggs filled 2 clear but seems the hens in there on her own only 2 have hatch because she's a grot. BUT turning out to be good mum.

My Spangle Line
Maybe that's true but I also think it's in their gentic makeup, I have gave chicken carcass a few times but it is really the young birds that get into it. I have a friend who gives his chop bones with a little meat left on it.

My Spangle Line
Thanks Renee, next year I am pairing a grey normal to my yellow df spangle, and my white Df spangles too. With the yellow one I will get all grey green spangles. with the white I could get grey sky blue and maybe even cobalt seems their the fathers mother is a cobalt. I just hope they have the feather these do and their size too as they are really quite big.

A Ladder For My Aviaries
Hi everyone thought I would share my idea , I hope I am not in the wrong post section, sorry if I am. Well I made these ladders I have only taken pics of bits of one of them, but I use 2x 1 pine dressed would for the main piece and 1x1 for the steps plus I also used different size dowel so the birds acn excerise their feet. It is a cheap and easy way to make a ladder for those birds that can't fly high. At the start of the ladder I have fixed a piece os 1x1 at the very top of the wood on the wrong side and this allows me to position it over the perch and it sits there without moving. And easy to take away and clean or replace. In the baby aviary I screwed it to a corner post not so easy to take away and clean etc. Take a look. The pics look straight up and down but they are not it is really on a good lean for the birds to jump from one perch to the next.

Update photos of babies The white df spangle are almost identical can't tell them apart. the 3 are from the same nest and the 2 males just look like their dad but they have bad suffusion but that's okay I will put them to normals when old enough.

Shade Meshing Aviary
Yes Kaz I had to come up with an idea thta was ugly, the the steel surports are attached to the cement sheeting and great bid heavy redgum slats which sit on top of the roof so I really don't think it will ever blow away, didn't connect it to the tin roof because it might of loosened the tin. But it seems to be working because the birds haven't sat on the floor since we put it up well not yet anyway even on a real hot day some of the birds have been still perching Slowly trying to talk Greg onto the front extesion part but it's a slow progress

Shade Meshing Aviary
Hey Greg and I have been putting shade on top of the aviary it's far from finished as I need to buy some more steel feet for the middle but it is working, Greg closed the front and right side to stop the afternoon sun getting on to the roof and the left side and back is open for the breeze to circulate, I am trying to talk him into having the front open like a veranda because there is enough shademexh to come out nearly 3 foot at the front and that would stop the sun from hitting the roof but Greg reckons it would be ugly. SO far he won't go for it but thta's okay at least I have this now. Here are a couple of pics The bit hanging over on this picture is to join onto the pine poles that are going in soon and greg is growing a grapevine there and that will help with some shade too.

Even though my almost three year old son has been told how to climb onto the big playground at the park he still needs my help doing so... This forum gives members ALOT of great information that helps our budgies stay fit and healthy but what this forum can not give is someone to have right there who I can call and say 'Hey Bart, I'm looking at my birds and something just doesn't look right you reckon you could pop round?' (And I don't think the forum should have to pay for 'tech support' for its members ) It would be fantastic if we had the Tonkins, Gazzards, Rowes here... if anyone knows them invite them! I've been reading this thread and found it great. I know its from an experienced breeders point of view, but If you'll allow I'll tell you the things that I'd like to find out as someone that wishes to join a club and start breeding next year after I've moved houses... I'd love to know what can go wrong. Having all the facts before me allows me to make a more informed decision... I'm the kind of person that can't stand surprises... take birthdays and christmas for example... I like to know what it is I'm getting. that way if I don't like it I have time to warm up to the idea or at least prepare myself to pretend to like it I'm the same with everything and so, I don't want any surprises... I buy 10 birds am told 5 are cocks 5 are hens... when I find out that they are all cocks you can bet I'm coming around to your place for a pleasant chat... Just looking at a bird WILL NOT tell me if the bird is, a good egg filler (in the case of a cock), a good egg layer (in case of a hen) wether they are good parents, it breeds well, what chicks it will reproduce (with 100% accuracy). All this information is passed onto me by 1 person, the person selling me the bird... What I would like as a beginner is to know that they arn't pulling the wool over my eyes. Sure when you cull you are of course not going to sell your best birds, thats not what I expect, what I would like is reliable information. For instance, if I come to you (an experienced breeder) and say, "I'm just starting out, I want a foundation Cock and Hen please," don't turn around and sell me a cock you KNOW shoots blanks and a hen that should she get pregnant by devine intervention will eat the eggs... or you can bet I'm coming around to your place for a pleasant chat... The biggest thing I'd want is 'Community', which isn't all that common nowadays... By joining a club I am saying I want to join you and become a part of your community. I don't want to be an outsider, I want to feel like I am accepted. Don't treat newbies with contempt... Yes it is obvious that you need a male and female bird to make babies but maybe I skipped health class in High School... As a beginner I'm going to ask stupid questions that one day someone will ask me... please just take a breath and offer a hand of help... Having been a member of this forum I now know what to look out for to determine sex, how healthy the bird is and other such things, but it would be REAL handy to have someone that I could ask for help in purchasing good birds for the price I pay. I guess what would be great is if there was some form of Mentoring or Apprenteship program at clubs... (This post is NOT about this forum, I have found the overwelming majority of people on this forum to be fantastic, friendly and helpful, but I am talking about Clubs, I have spoken to a number of different people on and off this forum who have told me stories about people who have ripped them off or treated them poorly from Clubs when they were beginners, that is sad, is it any wonder that we lose so many through the journey) This is great Jimmy and also true like our club is really great the more experience are happy to give advice but when you are starting out like m 2 years ago just won my first best beginner bird in show and I wanted to take that bird to 2 other shows and someone very imprtant in the club advised to the cut one tail feather and then in a couple of days pull it out and then it will grow back in time the the next show and the shield, this was on all my birds that I had ready for the shows, well of the birds tail feathers did not grow back in time because there was not enough time for them to grow back, the question was I advised right with good intensions or was it sinister. So when the shows came I only had one good hen to take and a couple of others all my good birds including the DF spangle were home with NO tails. Well anyway being new to show I entered my best bird in the wrong class as I didn't know any better, someone pointed it out to me and told me to ask the show manager to change it as I am a beginner and he said no, when the judge saw it he saked the show to change and he said no to him too and boy was I dissappointed, I actually changed clubs after that. Anyway that hen that was disqualified got picked in the young bird sheild and placed well. BUT what I am saying that first club they were all men and except for a couple of them none of them had the time of day for me. But now I am in a club that is much more friendly but they are very competetive. In the club I am in now we do a a couple of breeders that you would never buy a bird from. Forgot to mention in our club we have a mentore (how ever you spell) and he is very happy to come to our aviaries and give advice on how we are doing, help in pairing and advice with preventive medicine ect, he is the best.- How To Help A Beginner
That's the best club meaning top club Jimmy they have being winning all the shields lately and they have the top breeders there, Hunter, Thurn ect, I would love to be in that club- Trying To Make A Travel Cage
Well thankyou very much Renee, Jimmy and Kaz I think I might make cabinet maker one day Well look at all the cabinets I have made breeding boxes still it takes talent Kaz a screw just like you told me it's already to, it's just this dam heat that's stopping me, looks like next Saturday is going to be a scorcher too Oh yeah have to be able to carry them without tipping and so I thought they deserved a handle, gold too. - Best In Show...df Spangle And Ubc
