  1. Today is the first full day some birds are in their new aviary at The Harrington Flight. My sister called me this morning at 8am to tell me that "I gave her the wrong budgies, these ones starting chiping whilst SHE was still asleep " She said that the birds were well, they hade been eating seed and veges, and that the kids loved them. The best news however was that her hubby loved them. He loved waking up every morning and hearing them chirp. This is the one thing that I love about the birds as well, the sound of pure joy they show each and every morning as they chirp away happily. Winning him over is the biggest victory. There will never be any breeding of birds out there, my nephews can come and assist me when it comes to that, but I am very pleased that everyone loves them. The future looks very good for The Harrington Flight subdivision
  2. I also agree with Libby, Mauve Opaline Hen.
  3. Welcome to the forum. Elly is right, look in the FAQ section for taming tips. He will naturally be timid at first, so the week of him seeing you and realising you are not a threat is important. He is a recessive pied, you are right there. Good luck with it all.
  4. I am also of the opinion they are going to be winners. Absolutely amazing birds.
  5. Wattle Flights has opened up a new subdivision, some 25 minutes away, entitled The Harrington Flight. Today I moved 10 birds from my aviary into the aviary I had bought for my nephews. This new aviary is smaller than mine, and none of the birds moved are part of my breeding program. Humphrey, my first bird, is now King over there, Sunshine - a lute, Libby - a lute I was given by board member Libby, Hugo - a Double Factor Dom Pied, Athena - a blue hen (and the hardest to let go of), Aphrodite - sister of Athena and yellow faced type 2 sky blue hen, a greygreen spangle, a grey spangle, and 2 rescued pet types all have a new home. Some The aviary at the back of the yard The birds in the aviary front on The birds from the door - Humphrey surveying his new Kingdom The aviary was orginally used as a snakehouse, so there was a hole at the back where the light was placed. I enlarged the hole, and place a vent in there. That will allow an increase in air circulation, but will not let water in. All up, the boys are pleased, my sister is pleased, her hubby, not so pleased, and I have some more room in my aviary. Step one of the cull program has begun.
  6. One guy that I want to put down to breed is this guy here. I finally think I have the right hen for him. In this picture, the other blue boy at the front there, he is another I am deciding on a hen for.
  7. I do not think this is a big problem. Are planning on breeding? Cage of Colony?
  8. I feel very lucky, and a bit bad that she is such a great looking chick and she is coming to me, especially since this last clutch has had a little "drama". Thank you so much Kaz. As for the next trip over there, if Liv's shopping spree is anything to go by, it will be sooner rather than later - LOL.
  9. Keep this thread going, and show us the developing and developed birds please.
  10. I am taking some birds from my aviary to my sisters place on Saturday, and then after that, I will look at which birds I want to keep, and which ones I do not. I am not about making a profit on birds. If they do not fit into my plans, then I am happy to move them on, at a cheap rate. I willl post some birds that I am moving on in the "for sale" forum very soon.
  11. Well, the current breeding is slowing down dramatically. Only one pair are going through the motions now, and of their 5 eggs, only 1 was fertile. The Dark Green Cock and his GreyGreen Hen have a lovely little one they are raising. ring is on and all is good. I am going to give the breeding room a good clean out on the weekend, then some new pairs will be considered and put down.
  12. Very nice looking recessive pieds. I might be wrong, but the length of their mask seesm very impressive.
  13. Great looking albino's.
  14. Well the back is on the mend. Getting better
  15. Having an uneven number of birds is the main problem. You need a couple of pairs, rather than 3 budgies. There will always be squabbling with 3 birds. The other issue is that this new bird has moved into their home. Imagine you were married and had a home and some total stranger moved into your house, sat on your stuff, ate out of your food supply. Would you be annoyed? Solution - get another bird, quarantine it for 30 days. Whilst quarantining, put the solo male in a separate cage. If possible move the bonded pair out of the cage. Rearrange the new cage. Reintroduce all 4 birds into the big cage. Make sure there are plenty of perching spaces as well as plenty of feeding stations. This should mean that all birds can partner up as well as having plenty of space and room to just hang out.
  16. As Splat has said, if you breed dark green (Dd) to dark green(Dd), you will get 25% Light green (dd) 50% Dark Green(Dd) 25% Olive(DD) You then need to look at breeding the olive (DD) to either another olive (DD)or to another dark green(Dd). This will mean that 50% of the offspring will be dark green(Dd) and 50% will be olive(DD). The only way to guarantee olives(DD) is to breed olive(DD) to olive(DD).
  17. It was very hot. I am going to put extra water with ice in the aviary tomorrow to allow the birds to drink and remain cool.
  18. I would recommend a vet, as I have tried to deal with broken legs on my own, and it has not worked. I would put the bird in a seperate cage with a heat lamp. Watch it for a day, see if it is eating, see if the leg is bruised or damaged.
  19. A very hot day here in he West of Sydney, with temps rising to 39 degrees. I was off work today due to a back injury, so I managed to get outside and hose down the aviary. I also managed to adjust the spray setting, and so I hosed down quite a few birds. The hot wind was the worst bit of the heat. Hopefully tomorrow will not be as hot. Definitely BBQ weather for dinner.
  20. my morals are fine thank you
  21. enjoy - have you got your travel cages ready for bringing the birds home?
  22. I am sure it is unorthodox .... but in hot weather I pop eggs that are due to hatch into my mouth, give them a good ole lick and pop them back ... That is not unorthodox - sucking eggs is normal. Do you clean the poo off at the same time?
  23. I will consider showing her in the new year.
  24. I agree with you Friday night would be a poor choice for meetings. My club's meetings are on a Friday night, having been moved from a Monday back in the 90's. This was done to make it more family friendly (ie late nights for school kids are not good). However we now find that many of us are eager to get home to watch the footy! I guess you can't please everyone. Not many school kids at my club, seems more like an old person's club. At 34, I am the youngest there. Our club meeting goes from 7:30pm until about 11pm. It is either all footy or no footy.
