  1. Tam and Edmund have arrived at my house and are currently in quarantine. Their owners are going overseas for 9 months, so they are staying at my place. I told Bornwyn, one of their owners, who obviously loves her birds, that when she comes back from her 9 months sailing adventure, if she calls me and says that she would really love her birds back, then they are hers, no questions asked. So they may be new housemates, or simply 9 month house guests. Here they are trialling me new cage in quarantine. Edmund is on the left. He is an Golden Face Type 2 skye blue opaline, spangle 1 year old cock. Tam is a sky blue spangle 4 year old hen. Here they are without the flash I said I would regularly update pics on here on a regular basis so no matter where she is around the world, Bronwyn can see her birds. Watching guard are Mac and Tess, with their bed hair looks, they are so cute!!!
  2. okay, I have my new cages. These are my old cages - the wooden ones. You can see they are starting to wear out. I am not throwing them, rather I am going to replace the wood that needs replacing, and leave them in the garage. You never know. Here is one of the new cages set up. I am trialling it with some birds in quarantine. The only problem is that they cut the dowel perches to the minimum length, so when they cut the slit in them to go on the wire, they are too short. To solve the problem, I simply half screwed a screw in the end. Now they reach through the wire. Only problem will be that the perch is not that steady for mating, so in each cage when I am using them for breeding, I will simply put a thicker dowel perch, that I have cut. You can see 2 in the photo acutally. They are darker than the the thinner one.
  3. I am no expert, but let me guess. the black will disappear. I think it is a little girl. I think the white circles aroudn the cere indicate it is a girl.
  4. Hey Neat, I was the one with the Paler one who survived. This was little Pale Ale And this is her now - Gabriel She was not expected to survive. I lost 4 pale ones, all from another nest box, but her survival was a miracle, thus the religious based name.
  5. It will be simple. I am qualified to teach design. I can build a computer from scratch. If I cannot do this, I should just hop in my car and drive off into the sunset (no Kaz, I am not driving!!!)
  6. It is hard to tell because the pics are a little blurry. I would say spangle, though i am not sure about cinnamon

Does that eucalyptus oil in water really work? If it does, I might hang some in my aviary, using a method that prevents the birds getting to it, but the smell would not annow them and if it keeps rats and mice out, that would be fantastic. The steel wool is an excellent idea. I am going to use that as well. Thanks for the tips. I know they were meant for kaz, but the best thing about this board is that we all share and learn.
  8. I decided after my last round of breeding that I needed to do something about new cages. I also needed some cages to hold my birds whilst I had some fences replaced (the aviary has to be moved) I have been trawling e-bay, and then there was a post on here about inside cages, and someone recommended this website JJ Aviaries I looked at the website, spoke to the guy who has the cages, and I am picking up 3 tomorrow. The prices are good, though rising soon, so now was the time to buy. The cages I am getting are 3 x 76cmx46cmx46cm Cages + Stand , all for just $145 for 1 set of 3. So 3 of these below. I do not have time to make breeding cages of holding cages, and the fact that these are on wheels will make it so much easier for me to move them. I am pretty pleased. Big day tomorow assembling them. I had best check all those reports for errors tonight (teachers only work mon-fri 9-3...what a joke!!!!!)

so sorry to hear this. just when you think you have done everything to protect your birds, this happens.
  10. Congrats and great pics. I was worried reading this thread after the mishaps so far. Good to see a chick in there and that he/she is being well fed.
  11. It is normal. they are copying the behaviour of their parents. Budgies love to feed each other and this is a very important skill that they need to learn.
  12. they are all very cute.
  13. I agree with the pie. Charlie-Murphy looks like a female YF opaline violet sky blue. i would leave the name, charlie and murphy are both names that are uni-sex. We all know girls named Charlie and Murphy Brown was a female star of a sitcom in the 90's. She may well end up green after her first moult. buddy looks male to me, a Golden face type 2 violet recessive pied hard to tell violets on the computer, I openly admit I may be wrong.
  14. Good job Kaz. I read these threads and wish i had more room.

never hold those cages from the top, always best to carry them underneath. Lucky, this time you are. Learn from this you should (damn yoda speak)
  16. I am also very happy there is peace Deb. I felt bad that one of my young was causing grief.
  17. it depends on mum. If she is happy, leave them in there, if she looks like she is getting aggreive, get an old ice cream container, put shavings in it, and put it on the ground. You do need to snure that Dad is feeding them, and not just mum in the nestbox.
  18. YEs, add it. My hens clean it out, kick it out, scratch it out, but whent he young are born, i add more. Like was said above, it soaks up the poos.
  19. These two are not the same ages. The cock is a lot older than the hen. the hen is still young, look at her striped head, btu if you look at the deep blue of the cere of the cock, he is not the same age.
  20. No improvement with Laverne Deb? I feel bad.
  21. show me the ....pics! i will follow this thread with interest deb
  22. I would leave him to it. Dad's do a lot of the feeding at this age. Often the hens are beginning to look to lay a new clutch so Dad is doing a lot of child rearing and feeding. Sometimes mothers may begin to pluck the youngsters, so they are removed at this stage. Dad handles things well. Keep an eye on them, but the situation you have is not that unusual.
  23. it is her nature, i am afraid. she was always bossy, and i fear that as she goes through the teenage years, she may well be worse. Not sure what you can do. Hopefully she will grow out of it.
  24. sorry about the link, accident. I love the aviary, and the design. Would not work in cooler, windier cities, but up there in Qld, if I live there, i woud buy it
  25. Came across this in my searching. Absolute bargain. Qld'ers - go grab it. Cool cheap aviary
