Pink Budgie
Hey Kaz- do you remember a few yrs back there was the 'coloured chickens' on here I think. That had dye injected into the egg and the chicks came out coloured? I reckon that may work - have a crack http://www.poultryhelp.com/coloringchicks.html

Question For The Aussies
pm Chryso Lots of vets will do all you wish, depends where you would like to be based though. I think any of our winters no matter where in Aus you are wont be nearly as bad as what you guys get. Me- I would choose Brisbane or coastal Qld somewhere Plenty of work, farms and lots of beautiful places to visit on days off and not too cold. WA- too far between places to see the variety you get in Qld. Vic- very pretty but cold in winter

Animal Skeleton Collectors?
Hey Great Photo Maes. Grab the tweezers you can often pull/scrape off the dried meat and fur then just clean them in some warm soapy water and then peroxide Soak them in water is best and let it rot off its the bacteria thats needed so dont add salt, bleach etc to the water, simmering can work- dont boil, it does change the surface of bone. A taxidermist told me not to boil my heads to get the meat off but if I didnt want to wait for the water method to simmer them. A friend of mines daughter in the states had to put a skeleton together for school assignment. When an owl eats them it doesnt digest the bones and regurgitates it in a lump of muck later. They get the muck and a skeleton diagram and then they put it together. I'll see if she'll let me put the finished pics up- its clean

Been A While
The 'girls' and the 'pup'. Although she is now 2 I think she will be referred to as 'the pup' for a while yet Took the pics yesterday on the morning run, they dont knock up the chance of a swim no matter how small or muddy

Been A While
Its been a bit since Ive been on- well not true I do pop in now and again for a peep. I stopped breeding last Sept. We went away for 5 weeks and then once we got back its too hot to start again. Not much point breeding here between Nov and March so the birds have had a break Gave the numbers a knock-back the other day too- maybe got rid of some birds I shouldnt have but I needed space if I wanted to breed on this year. Few new members to the avairies Pair of Mulgas I picked up last year and a Galah. Got him as a youngster, finished his raising then weaned him. He wanders around the place starting to talk and understand. Dogs are good with him and he has a love-hate relationship with the youngfella He has started to get soppy he'll come up and press his face right against yours for a 'birdy' cuddle. Made me a bit nervous at first wondering what he was going to do. For someone that never liked pink and greys I think they are growing on me. and the young bloke. having a cool-off at work. Anyways thats it for now

Canardly Miss
Used to use Carbery alot, Stubbsy when he could keep his weight down. If she isnt a touchy mare, knuckey gets alot out of them. I dont know alot of the new jockeys now. Hope you get what you are after, you shouldnt HAVE to use his jockey but it may be how he works? Its a shame to see good mares put back by injuries and jockeys

Lacewing Chick
It's a cutie GB.How's it going? The pics on the benchtop dont look feather duster, just very feathered. More worried it is a weak bird, one that doesnt hold weight well and not a ..(whats the word ) I dont know, vibrant/enthusiastic. They just never seem right when in the aviary.Hopefully a good course of feeding sees this bird right.Good luck mate- the rest look like beauties too You beat me

The Definitive Meat Protein Debate
I think the easiest way of giving protein is boiled eggs, protein powder (like what Kaz uses) or meat meal if so inclined. Quick & easy. I wouldnt get too hung up on meat as it would be a small part of their overall diet. One way to find out is next time you find a fresh dead wild budgie, have a quick examination of its crop contents. The ants do get into my soft food a bit but I Coopex the ground once a month or after rain and keeps them away

Broken Or Sprained Leg?
The last 12 months I traded budgie knowledge' space in my brain ( ) for work knowledge. But dont birds get tumour (abdoman, kidney?) that once it gets to large, presses on arteries or nerves and restricts leg movement?? I did know something about it but seem to have forgotten alot lately

The Definitive Meat Protein Debate
Have you not used meat meal? I was going on what H said a few years back to me and what was said the same on the other forum? Just wondering if it was why some hens got cranky on it and some didnt- same as the horses, some it affects temperament, others physically. I add a bit of meatmeal in my softfood- to the crushed eggs but Ive never seen the problem in my flock. Youve had my brain working tonight- thinking back to the racehorse and even ponyclub days

The Definitive Meat Protein Debate
Does the fact that a wild bird will burn off excess protein and energy make a difference to us feeding our cage birds that rarely break a sweat? In horses too much protein early in life while growing causes the bone to grow quicker than the tendons giving hoof problems, lower limb problems, also in older horses swelling in the feet causing restricted blood flow. Protein is good for bulking up an animal, as long as your burning off the excess sugar it creates Some horses that didnt burn it off showed it in temperament changes, physical changes and illness. Budgies dont seem to have shown any symptoms with over feeding with proteins yet, different digestion?? Or are those cranky hens being fed meat protein, just not handling the excess they are being fed, taking it out on the nearest thing at hand, chicks? As with anything- all in moderation

Congrat Libby, hope you had a wonderful day.

The Definitive Meat Protein Debate
I can get you some freerange, nothing added, low fat mince Renee  Just gotta wait til I come down There are 2 stages most 'scavengers' will eat roadkill- most of the time its fresh meat, killed within the day or so. After that it goes through its breaking down stage (the stinky stage) this is bacteria breaking down the muscle fibres and generally being no good for much. The last stage is the 'jerky' stage, lack of fresh roadkill will have animals eating this. You see birds (ie crows, maggies and others) hanging around the carcass in all stages but they are mostly eating the huge amount of maggots and bugs the carcass is producing at a HUGE rate. I havent had problems with hens attacking chicks while feeding meatmeat mixed with soft food, the only times Ive had hens attack chicks was when I was away and they were only getting egg or vegies. I was warned by one of those breeders quite a while ago and kept an eye on it I do know what goes into it, a good friend of mine used to make it at his employment. I got over being squirmy along time ago. Not alot of farmed meat gets the antibiotics and hormones fed to it, in fact in any of the red meat IVe had anything to do with- sheep cattle and goats- apart from the routine lice and worming they are paddock kept. Renee- most butchers are on a tight ship when it comes to what they add to their meat in the packet, they were banned from using the bad stuff years ago, I'll find out what they use now (mostly)

Broken Leg.
Few weeks he should be right.I had the same happen to a young hen last year, although I still dont know what it caught on but could see where it happened.Blood everywhere, broken leg. Not alot you can do sometimes- I left her, keeping an eye on her a few times a day in case she went downhill but she healed up well, slightly crooked, but now you are hard pressed to pick her from the rest. She moulted into a lovely looking hen, a true hen of her line. So Im glad she pulled through.

Sad News From Home....
Hey Maes- sorry to hear about your family, but like you say she is at peace now. It does help making a spot for her in your house for a nice photo or memory of her. I have lost many family members and friends in the last 2 years (and countless in the last 10) but it never gets any easier either- although you get more comfortable in cemetaries, they dont put the wind up your back as much

This Is It!
Id leave the rec pieds together so you can get more rec pieds, like macka said its not done with show birds- but these arent show birds and you dont have a choice of 40 mates for it either. He would have realised this when he said it Pair 2 you should get greywings- hen looks light grey too, if she isnt then maybe not lol Good luck

Lou Lou The Corella
Is he not much into females (female owners?) I saw a fantastic boy while I was in PErth and for the first time in a very very long time I really fell for a bird... he seemed to get distressed when I left though so may have some separation issues there and I dont think Im prepared for that at the moment. Havent stopped thinking of him though.... quite unusual for me Good luck with your boy, hope he comes round and you find a lovely owner for him. Its quite sad how many people will take on a cockatoo/corella and not realise just how much they need regarding the social and emotional side of things

Can My "bushies" Go In The Avairy?
Budgies are budgie are budgies..........................., its only the size that changes. Bushies are smaller and should not have any other mutations hidden in their genetic makeup. Breeding a bushy with another 'type' will not change the bushy but the chicks will just become 'pet type'. Nothing stopping you breeding a bushy to another bushy down the track
