Meet Our Pretty Boy!
Here are some pics of our baby. I hand reared him from 3 weeks of age and he is a real character. He loves to sit on your shoulder or head and has a ride around the house wherever we go.He has a fetish for toe nails also. Almost talking, wolf whistles. Runs up and down the door of his cage to get out!http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g212/jen...3/budgie002.jpg See below for photoes - he's not camera shy is he ??? Edit: Hi jenene283 I'm sorry but your photo is too big for the forum. I have changed it to a link. Max size is 450 x 450

Budgie Sits On Eleven Eggs
Last breeding season I had a hen sitting on 5 of her own eggs and 3 King Parrot Eggs. If the situation I was in wasnt so desperate I would have never considered it but the king parrot wouldnt sit on her eggs (laid them all over the ground) and the budgie incubated them for me. Once they hatched she only fed them for a day and when she realized they werent hers, she started to attack them. She killed one and I rescued the others (thank God). I had to hand rear them of course, and they turned out to be absolutely gorgeous birds. I hope it doesnt happen again this year! I was amazed just how many eggs they manage to sit on. King Parrot eggs are twice as big as a budgie egg. She did a great job! :hap:

Is Lucerne/alfalfa Hay Ok For Budgies?
I have never heard of budgies eating lucerne hay before, they love any seeding grasses, spinach, sprouting seeds, and other vegies. But I dont think they would go for the hay.

I'm So Egg-cited!
I know how excited you must be, as I have just started breeding my birds as well and when you see that first little white egg - well, its better than winning lotto!! I originally bought a few pairs of budgies to breed as a hobby for my son, but when they didnt breed straight away, he lost interest. I now have babies at all different ages and I absolutely love it! It is lots of fun seeing what colour the chicks turn out to be - hope you enjoy it as much as I do!! Good luck!

Food For Baby Chicks
My birds have corn on the cob, sprouted seed, endives and spinach in their breeding cages and they devour it! All these foods have all the vitamins and minerals they need to rear strong, healthy chicks. I would give the weetbix a miss. Good luck with your chicks.

Excellent Book...highly Recommended
Yes I agree with budgiebird, it is an excellent book! I handrear everything from King Parrots down to budgies and could never have done it without this book! I think every bird lover should have a copy. It has everything you could ever need to know in it with great photos. Certainly worth every cent!

Budige Help Help Help Help
Yes, he is just wonderful. He even wants to come outside with me to where I have my breeding cages. I have to take him off my shoulder and place him somewhere inside then try to run outside before he catches up to me. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times to get outside without him! I dont believe in cutting their wings. This morning I heard him wolf whistle for the 1st time,(have been teaching him that for the past few weeks) I know he is going to be a real character. He's only 7 weeks old!

Should I Keep Cocks And Hens In Separate Cages?
Just wondering what the pros and cons are of keeping the hens and cocks separate while not breeding. I have seen lots of people keeping them all together, but have read that they can be caged in separate aviaries while not breeding. What do you all think?? And does it really matter one way or the other??

Budige Help Help Help Help
I have handled my budgie since he was about 3 weeks old. I didnt really have to train him to sit on my shoulder, he just chooses to! I did train him to sit on my finger but once he felt comfortable doing that, he more or less flies wherever he wants to and lands on my shoulder (or head) whenever he wants. He is a great companion, and lots of fun.

Corn
My budgies love corn on the cob. Especially when feeding their young, and its the first thing they devour . They have the choice of endives, sprouted seed and corn. I only give it to them once or twice a week as I have read it can make them fat.....

Never thought of using a heat pad for keeping chicks warm. Is that the sort you buy for reptiles?? I have a home made brooder but I like the idea of the heat pad as well.

Maybe They're Not So Weird After All!
A few days ago I posted a topic about my little chicks looking a bit different, ie fluffy feathers around head etc. Well I am pleased to report that they are starting to look normal. I dont know what went wrong with them but I can now say they look just like any other budgie. It was a bit weird, I thought they had some genetic problem or they were the budgies called Chrysanthemum ?? with the curly feathers. So its all good!! PS I think I just worry too much

Previous Posting Re Backyard Breeder Concerns
After reading about this, it has prompted me to report a person not too far away from me who sells budgies all year round. I felt sick to the stomach after visiting him. He had between 100- 200 budgies in a cage that was lined with filthy dirty nest boxes, inside and outside -bird poo 6 inches thick and birds that obviously breed all year with whatever bird they want which would mean many cases of birds being inbred. It was reallly disgusting! This person obviously does it for the money and not for the love of birds. The RSPCA is going to get a phonecall first thing in the morning......

I'll be watching them VERY carefully. I know they're better off with mum, but I was getting very attached to my baby. Time will tell though!

An Update On My "adopted" Chick
Great news! Another chick has hatched out of the clutch whose parents wouldnt feed the 1st baby(who was being hand-fed by moi,) and the parents have figured out that they actually have to feed these little creatures. I got up this morning and went straight down to have a sticky beak and it was like I'd won the lottery to see food it its crop!!! So, Karen, if you're reading this, thanks for the encouragement, I've put 'my little man' back under her, with fingers crossed they should feed him too!! I think I've done rather well to feed and nurture him this long without any disasters - miracles do happen!!!! :hap: :fear :fear

Help With Hand-rearing Day Old Chick!
Went out for the morning and found he still hasnt been fed, he is now 24 hours old, so whether the parents will figure out what to do, I have no idea. There are another 6 eggs under the hen so I hope they learn pretty fast!! I feed him and put him back under the hen for warmth of a day and in my brooder of a night. He's still hanging in there, so there's hope for him yet....
