Help With Hand-rearing Day Old Chick!
Thanks I think I'm going to need it. I have just checked on him, the parents are fussing over him but still havent fed him. Will leave him there a bit longer - thought I might get him out to feed him if parents dont and put him back under mother to keep him warm.. At least that way he's the right temperature!! :budgiedance:

Help With Hand-rearing Day Old Chick!
Well he has survived the night, I fed him every two hours during the night (its like having a baby all over again). I have just fed him now 6.00am and have put him back under his mum. Will see what happens today - please, please let this work, if not will put him under another hen when her eggs hatch, which should be around next Tuesday. Will keep you posted. :hap:

Whats Wrong With My Baby Budgies?
They certainly dont behave like all my other hand reared birds. By now they shouldnt be scared of me when I go near them and they shouldnt be hungry all the time. The parents dont seem to have any infection of any kind. I saw them mating again yesterday so I think I will seperate them so this doesnt happen again.

Whats Wrong With My Baby Budgies?
They are really ravenous all the time, they just cant get enough feed. Their crops look like they are going to burst sometimes, they are always squarking like they are hungry. I am sure they are not normal. The male parent is the same colour and they have looked like this the last week or so. Someone said they might be inbred (unbeknown to me, I might have put a related pair together, would that cause this sort of thing?) The owner of these birds they were not related when I bought them). Is the male shaking his head after eating? Is there small amounts of food coming from his mouth when he shakes his head? No, he doesnt shake his head and no food comes from his mouth, they look 'oversize' for their age. Have I bred some sort of freaks???

Help With Hand-rearing Day Old Chick!
Yes, shes sitting on another 6 eggs. I hope to God she gets the hang of it soon, or I'm going to be one very busy foster mother!! I left the chick under her most of the day and she hadnt fed it, didnt want it to die, so thats when I removed it (tonight) How long can they survive without being fed?? :ausb:

Help With Hand-rearing Day Old Chick!
I had a chick hatch this morning and sadly the hen has not fed it all day. I have given it a diluted handrearing mix to keep him alive and put him back under her hoping she would feed him but she's not concerned about him at all. I even tried putting him under another hen who is expecting her eggs to hatch any day but she didnt feed him either. So now its up to me! I've just put him in my brooder at 35degrees, thats as high as it goes. How often should I feed him (I just know I'm not going to get any sleep tonight!) and is there any thing else I can put in his feed (Passwells Handrearing Mix) to give him a bit of a boost. I would hate to lose him, he is a real battler. Thanks to everyone who replies to my dilemma!! :ausb:

Whats Wrong With My Baby Budgies?
I am hand rearing 3 4-week old budgies and they are looking a bit strange. The feathers around their face have a curly look about them and are quite fluffy. One of them is very cranky and tries to bite me. I am wondering if there is a genetic problem with them?? The mother is a pied and father is a normal. Any help would be appreciated.

How Many Times A Year Do I Let Them Breed?
I have 6 pairs of beautiful, very well looked after budgies that I adore. I have let them breed once so far this year,(one pair have laid again after rearing one lot). I have each pair in a breeding cage and are fed only the best of everything. I am curious how often other breeders let their birds breed. I have read you should only let them breed twice a year, what do other breeders think?? :hap:

Eggs Not Hatching? Help!
An egg should hatch 18 days after it is layed, and the next will hatch 2 days later, and so on. Don't remove any egg till you are sure it was laid at least 19 days ago. An egg should hatch 18 days after it is layed, and the next will hatch 2 days later, and so on. Don't remove any egg till you are sure it was laid at least 19 days ago. If the eggs havent hatched by now they are most likely empty. I had a pair produce 5 eggs, 1 hatched but died and the other 4 were emptyShe had been sitting on them for about 26 days so I got them out and found they were all empty. But she laid again and is sitting on another 5 eggs so hopefully they are fertile. If she laid the last egg on the 28th March it should have hatched on the 15th April. I would give them a few more days and then discard them, hopefully she will lay again. If it happens again there is obviously something wrong with her or the cock bird.

Not Feeding..?
Hi Dont be too disapointed, I'm sure your other pair will produce some babies for you!! I have been breeding budgies for a long time and you are always bound to come across some sort of problem or another. Because your hen is new to all this, she obviously hasnt got a clue what to do. (Like some human mothers!!)Hopefully next time round she will know what to do. It is very hard to hand rear birds that are newly hatched. I was faced with this problem with King Parrots and none of my chicks survived. Getting the right mix for newborns is very difficult and they must be kept warm at all times, so there is a lot of preparation involved I'm afraid. If you have another hen with chicks you might be able to put the un-fed ones under her, this works most times and saves you a lot of work and sleepless nights! Good luck! Keep us posted :dbb1:

My Birds Are Mating But No Eggs !
I have a mature pair of budgies that have been in a breeding cage for the last 4 -5 weeks. I have seen them mating a few times but a lot of the time when the cock tries to mate the hen over balances and he falls off! Its quite funny to watch. (They have mated properly a few times) But the hen hasnt laid any eggs, she inspects the nest box for a few minutes each day but still no eggs!! I was wondering if anyone can tell me why?? :dbb1:

Problem With Hand Rearing Chicks
Am very happy to report that all is well with my chicks!! I perservered with the spoon feeding and they eventually got the hang of it and they are thriving. It was touch and go for a while as it took a few days for them to work out how to get the food from the spoon into their beak! So thankyou everyone for your input - it is great to have this website to ask questions and have so many caring people offer suggestions. Thanks again.

Problem With Hand Rearing Chicks
No I have never used a crop tube, as I've heard if you dont know what you are doing it can kill them (food goes into lungs instead of stomach). To feed them I just slowly squirt the food into their mouth from the corner of their beak. Have never had a problem doing it that way with King Parrots, Princesses etc.

Problem With Hand Rearing Chicks
Last week I tried to hand rear my 3 3-week old chicks. I was feeding them with a syringe with a good quality handrearing mix and not long after feeding them they would shake their heads (in a way similar as if they had something on their face and they are trying to shake it off) for a least a few minutes. I am wondering why they do this. I have reared larger parrots for years and have never come across this before and am wondering what would cause them to do this. I was so concerned that I ended putting them back with their parents to finish rearing them, as I didnt want to lose them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Why Are My Baby Budgies Doing This? Hellllp !
The funny thing is they dont have any feed left on the beaks. I wipe any feed away with a tissue and leave their beaks clean. I was too concerned to handrear them and put them back with their parents to finish rearing them. My idea was to have them nice and tame but I didnt want anything going wrong. They are thriving and thats the main thing
