Ta, maesie. I am glad I noticed it early. It will be a lot less stressful for him AND me getting it dealt with! I totally agree, Elly. You don't need to be a vet or an expert on all thing budgie when you have such a great resource and support network like this one. And the lovely thing is, no-one here expects anyone else to be a vet or an expert on all things budgie, so (hopefully) no-one feels silly asking questions, or just running things by the other members!

The only reason my mind ticked over when I noticed it was because I have had a budgie in the past who had it. On that occasion it was a fair bit worse before I noticed it and thought something was wrong, because I didn't know what scaley face looked like and thought that perhaps he had a bit of dry skin or something on his cere. It wasn't until I saw someone else's post that I realised he had scaley face. It was easy enough to clear up though. Don't panic!

Interesting... Seeing as he is on his own, once he's been treated is it likely that he'll get it back again or will it probably fix the problem entirely (ie will the little buggers die and never return, or just go into hiding?)

Okay, that makes sense. I have had him since May and he was a baby when I got him, so perhaps he had it lying dormant when I got him.

hrmph... thanks for your quick replies! In some ways I was hoping it wasn't, but in others I was hoping it was... I know what to do about scaley face... Hrmph again :question: Neat, I don't have any ivermectin, but will call the vet I took Casper to and see if I can just pick some up... may have to take him in if they won't let me do it myself... I don't have a car during the day as my hubby drives to work, so may have to make do with oil til the weekend. Also, I am curious as to how he has ended up with it? Can it lie dormant for ages and then just come out at some point? He has no contact with other budgies so couldn't have picked it up form another bird. He seems happy and healthy too, so I'm not sure that stress would have played a role (I have read that stress can make them more susceptible?). Any ideas?

Hi Guys, Just this morning I noticed Smokey's beak is looking a little different. My first thought was that it might be scaley face, but when I went to the FAQ and did some other investigations to find pictures to help me confirm, all I could find were photos of really severe, set in scaley face... and I'm not so keen on waiting round to see if Smokey's beak ends up looking like that as a means of confirming it! When Casper got it, his cere got all flaky and dry looking first, but this doesn't seem to have happened with Smokey. Also, how would he have picked it up? He is an only feather-child and his cage is indoors. For the mean time I have brushed a little oil on the area, but have put a few pics below for you to check out (I'd just trimmed his wings, so he really wasn't in the mood for more handling or photos so there was very little love or holding still!).
