Generally around this time budgies do start molting but they also start to get hormonal and males can tend to be flirty with the person who spends the most time with them which I bet is you. When I get him to step onto my hand, he sometimes bites me and gives a warning swark (like go away!), but he will still step onto my hand. He'll generally stay on my hand but may continue to bite my fingers!! Generally his bites are not hard. When he does this, I just ignore him. He probably is cranky because of molting but also hormonal. The getting on your hand and biting gentle or even hard and flirting with your fingernails is a sign of hormonal behavior and it will continue. You are his "mate" or so called buddy so that is what budgies do they flirt and they will do it often if given a chance. With my hubby, it's worse. When he tries to get Alfie, he gets bitten quite hard on the fingers and Alfie tries to get away. When Alfie's out of the cage and flying around the house, he evades him by flying erratically around and has crashed heavily into doorways a couple of times. So far, he hasn't injured himself. How much time does your husband spend with him? My husband spends hardly anytime with Merlin, Merlin is my bird or I am his girl lol the same thing happens all the time if he wants a different bird he will need to take the same steps you have to create a bond. Birds don't bond overnight they are not like "some" dog (I say some because I am not talking about ones that have been abused) but dogs are usually always happy to be by a person birds are not like that at all you have to work with them all the time and be with them. I'm quite concerned about his behaviour, especially towards my hubby and the risk of Alfie seriously hurting himself or worse. He's healthy in every other way (ie. eating, flying, babbling, playing with toys and his buddy Sandy). I would consider but your choice to have his wings clipped so your husband can work with him more when he is out of his cage you can always let them grow back in that is what I did with my birds they both had 1 clip and then after that they were not clipped again. This is very common behavior because he does see your husband as a threat and feels like he has to protect you. Alfie's also gotten grumpy with Sandy and they tend to squabble more. I know they normally get on because they always want to be together and often preen/feed each other. Make sure that the cage is large enough, there are enough perches high and low where they both can go, make sure they are enriched, you can read about foraging and making them work for their food, along with different types of toys and switching them out often. Squabbles are normal but if they are getting bad you may need to separate them for a bit. Could Alfie just be going through a phase or could it be that he prefers women? (my family once had a galah who loved my sister but hated dad). Birds don't prefer sexes I don't believe that unless abused by that sex, they bond to the person (male or female) who is with them the most, and in most cases (not ALL) it is the female not the males in the family.
  6. wonderful news
  7. Not all budgie mess drops downwards. Think about it, Every flit across the cage, every flap of the wings sends the seeds husks into the air. Your bedding carpet, curtains etc gets covered in DUST. So true, my computer room since Merlin is in here full time is the so dusty it is not just the bird feather dust, the seed shells too...I personally would not keep a budgie in my room because of the allergans and I am not allergic to dander or dust but it is unhealth for it to be in your lungs and settle there. It is a personal choice and if this is the only spot you can keep him then I would make sure you keep his cage very clean and do the best you can.
  8. Elly replied to Houman's topic in Cage Discussion
I think they are a bit different but small cages can be used similarly, a travel cage would be more secure, my small cage as Kaz said the doors need to be tied off, the perches taken out of, the seed bowls removed and those doors tied off and the tray removed and then I put a small towel on the bottom where they can stand and newspaper over if if you prefer.
  9. I just love kitten energy they are so cute cute and she is just adorable, congrats.

your photos are so nice and what a nice story to go with them, you should enter 1 of them for Budgie of the Month if you haven't already just make sure they are sized to 640x480 :bump:
  11. I know it is just one budgie but I have heard and read that keeping a budgie in your bedroom is not healthy for the human because of the feather dust and breathing it in while you are asleep it could cause breathing issues, with 1 I am sure it is not a big deal but I am putting that out there.
  12. very normal
  13. that is because he was the odd man out most likely you had 4 the other once probably were already established with their pairs or bonding friend therefore it left him out and no one to pair with.
  14. budgies are social creatures so by nature they will bond or try to bond to another animal or human, that is why when you have a sole budgie (bird) you will find that they do bond closely with their human, because this budgie is a baby this behavior is very normal as the love bird is the closest thing to another bird, I would not be afraid of the budgie hurting the lovebird but vs versa.
  15. Your budgie looks like a female and looks to be around 3 months old. I would allow them to visit each other supervised but not be housed together. Cute picture you should submit it for this months Budgie of the Month competition.

  22. Oh how cool Kaz, I have read about them.
  23. No the ink on the printer would not make him sick very unlikely. Birds do not have a great sense of smell where an oder would bother them. Their eyes and ears are where their great sense comes into play. The noise of the printer probably got him all excited any loud noises usually get budgies excited in a good way most of the time because they are used to living in large colonies where it is always noisy. Silence for a bird means danger, noise means everything is going well. There is a taming article in the FAQ if you would like to read through it on taming.
