  1. that was just a theory (discussion) going on there is no documenation or conclusive evidence that I have read about the opaline gene that would say they are split. This would only pertain to the male because he would need 2 opaline genes to see the mutation, the female only needs 1 opaline gene to express the mutation. As this is a sex-linked mutation.
  2. If you click here you can see the different mutations and see visually what Nerwen is saying about the spangle, greywing etc.. Different Mutations

What a sweetie and I believe this is why he is sick as Kaz said he was way to young. I would contact your pet store manager, the RSPCA or report them as if this is happened to you it is happening to others. Bless you for not just trotting back and giving him back he really needs your love and help. As for the avian vet I don't believe vets are expensive when you look at the long term. In the short term sure you need your money but who doesn't right. Just think about how much you we spend on other things that are not a total necessity. We say we don't do it but we all do . In the end we will find the money to make sure that our beloved pet is taken care of. The worse thing about budgies and other smaller pets is that they are considered throw away pets and not worth putting vetting into. In reality your budgie may live longer then your dog or cat. We all have to realize that any pet can get sick and before we purchase realize that it is going to cost us one day to make sure they are happy and healthy. So when you look at terms is a vet expensive again at the time you may be short changed but in the future your pet will thank you for not having to suffer. I got a rabbit years ago for $5 at a flea market, I was in the ER with him within 3 days of e-coli infection. I spent 100.00 US dollars on him and I was only 17 I believe at the time. It was my own money and I was devastated but I didn't think twice. The bunny died and I shed tears as if I had him for 10 yrs the life expectancy of a rabbit. So tell your husband that the money is missing for a good cause

Do you have an organization that you can report disputes about a certian company? Like in the US we have the Better Business Bureau where we can report issues and they will even help us fix them and contact that certain company. This would be my next step to report the store and the maker.
  18. I was thinking the same thing maybe they were masked or the spangle gene had not yet come through. Or he is not a double factor spangle but something else and his genes are being masked not sure if that is possible. Lets see what they look like when they feather up. Kaz you are correct they would be 100% Single Factor Spangle. Macka there are are 2 spangle genes genes and when you do the charting all 4 chances would get 1 Spangle gene so all would have 100% spangle. You would be correct if it was a Single Factor Spangle.
  19. thank you Bea

your vet is right he was very young maybe even too young to adopt and this is probably most likely why he got sick from not being weaned properly, the stress of leaving his family too soon. Budgies are ready to leave their parents around 7-10 wks and their beak is changed by then or they may just have a streak of black or tipped. He sounds like he just hit that mark. Where did you get him from? What is his diet like?
  21. I agree with everything Bea said especially the cage that is your biggest priority you need 2x the size cage here are examples of our member's cage set-ups http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...=132&artlang=en I do not know what your budget is but you can get a decent aviary style cage for between 100-150 US dollars. I got my cage for 100.00 US dollars and I can fit at least 4 budgies in it and I know that Nathen has the same cage and lives in Canada so you can get it out there. That would be your first priority again is a bigger cage ASAP.

oh and quick question are you going to an avian vet or regular vet, that does make a difference on the course of treatment taken (sometimes)
