  1. I would start with a very small room like a bathroom personally also I wouldn't let them out until they are trusting you, are their wings clipped? If not I personally suggest a 1 time wing clip, budgies that are not clipped tend to fly everywhere, into wall and they can break their necks, and then it is a chase of getting them back in the cage and that takes your bonding process a couple steps back, if they are clipped letting them out is easier because you can have them step up and catch them easier. How tamed are they right now?

    Welcome
  5. keep us updated on what they say , have you decided where you will go to get your 2nd budgie?
  6. 2 budgies are definitely louder then 1 by 100% they have someone to chat with all day long and birds are rarely quiet except for those few hours in the afternoon and during the night, I could see that would be the only reason why they would say no, budgies tend to be loudest in the morning and early evening.

Oh my gosh Cathy, when I saw their names I though NOOOOOO, this is such a shock to me as well, I so feel your pain. HUGE hugs. Did you have a gas leak, tephlon etc..??
  10. When you look at the side of the face under the eyes the stripes are completely different from the opaline to the normal striping and I would think that the reversal of the striping around the eyes (which is not) would indicate opaline not the broken lines because that could be due to the pied gene .... I have to look at Pretty's picture more closely, not that they are wrong but that wouldn't make sense to me since the striping looks completely different from the opaline to the rec. pied.
  11. I would assume you would mean the reversal of the striping but I don't see that in this recessive pied? Correct me if I am wrong.
  12. Yes, please let me know how. As soon as I get anywhere close to them the fly to the furthest corner of the cage scared to death. Although I slowly preset my finger in the cage several times a day, every day for the past 4 months they are still scared. Any help would be welcome. Make sure you read the article in the FAQ section too called Taming Your Budgie
  13. Where do you see the opaline in the rec. pied? Asking because I want to see it too If you get a better shot of the cere of the recessive pied without a flash that could probably help clear things up, a close up, no flash, on macro setting. He looks like he may have been through 1 molt (how old is the bird?) and that is why I am saying male because the cere would be more brown by now I would think and it still looks pretty pink.
  14. Jen do some reading up on breeding the smaller budgies, it has been done and from what I have read and heard that they are not as healthy as the larger budgies, some of the mutations tend to be on the smaller side like your recessive pieds and ino (I believe too). As with the washed out marking that comes with the cinnamon gene it tends to give the body a more diluted look.
  15. good for you for following the rules and asking, we used to be landlords and the worse thing is having to kick somone out because they didn't follow the rules, fingers crossed.
  16. As for taming we have a section dedicated to that if you want to ask your questions there and also in the FAQ section there is an article called Taming Your Budgie .
  17. yes she is normal, after they molt they loose the barring on the head and it recides and the striping may look different but it is normal striping pattern for a budgie.
  18. The recessive pied looks like a male too me and I agree the other is a hen.
  19. I agree, that is what I said

Welcome, looking forward to getting to know you and your flock Look forward to pictures too.
  21. Check out our FAQ, I think Pearce's explanation is very similar to that or that one but we have all this information in the FAQ section under Mutations .

Very nice, I love all the different rainbow of colors you have , your budgies are gorgeous. Thank you for posting them as images it is so much easier to view them this way.
  23. The best way to teach them how to get used to you outside of the cage is to do a 1 time wing clip (or you can keep them clipped) there are debates about clipping so this is my opinion. When you do at least a one time wing clip it gains you control to keep your bird by you vs chasing it around until it is exhausted and then it stays by you which is more tramuatic. Doing a wing clip gives you the advantage of working with your bird closely without the chase and without the bird getting hurt. If you read the taming article that I typed up and added to the FAQ you will see this is how I tamed Pretty and Merlin, Pretty was a pet store budgie so it took more effort but after I did the first wing clip I didn't have to clip him again.

That is awesome Hill...Love it! Congrats.
  25. Anne, one of the Admin, has all females budgies and she absolutely adores them :bluebudgie:. Females tend to be quieter which makes them more appealing to budgie owners, yes they can be moody but aren't we all :bliss: .. I would say more around molting time is when they are, the 1 thing about females is that you do have to watch that they don't get egg bound even if they are not around a male budgie they can still lay eggs some do some don't.
