It is not uncommon in young chicks for this to occur. For others reading this, if you have a chick with an extra toe pointing forward it can be straightened by retraining the toe. It can only be done when they are grown and should be done by a vet or someone who is experienced and knows what they are doing.
  2. Cobalt recessive pied cock with dark green dominant pied hen
  3. Eugenics is unethical to humans because it is telling people who aren't the desired type that they can't have kids. It also narrows the gene pool and is seen every day with each breed of dog. A dog or other pet however does not know that it is never going to breed (if it had undesired traits) and it wouldn't bother them to quite the same degree as a human. Also we have to remember not to place human emotions on to animals. The ethical thing really comes into play as soon as you take those birds out of the wild. It is ethical to keep them in a cage? Is it ethical to keep them in a small flock? Is it ethical to keep them with only a few choices for partners? Generally I wouldn't want to breed a bird that would pass on a painful condition to its young, because that is cruel to the young.
  4. A mosquito net is a really good thing to stick over you and the cage when you open it.
  5. Good on ya girl! You'll love it. I just did my first day of work experience in a clinic today and it was great!
  6. Unfortunately DrNat, while this would create a slightly healthier human species. It is unethical. Pretty much every person wants to have children and they aren't going to let a defect prevent them from doing so. Human's luckily are very outbred compared to our average pet and so genetic problems don't occur as often. Think about this. If you had a defect, lets say one as simple as short sightedness, would you not have children because of it? That sort of idea is very similar to the eugenics program of Germany, better known for the production of the Aryan "race". Times are good nowadays because children with parents with known genetic diseases can be tested earlier and something done about it. This also prevents some children being born with serious defects. So in a sense things are being done about it, but in an ethical way.
  7. You haven't heard of LOLcats!!!! We need a lolcat stat! This should cure you: LOLcats
  8. They are very cute. It would be a good idea to clean the stuff off of the second chick's beak so that it doesn't misshape the beak.
  9. Wow, that is awesome.
  10. But if it was suspended you could adjust it to suit your back. Couldn't you?
  11. They are just cleaning their beaks. You will find the males do this too. Pretty much all birds do this.
  12. Don't put him down!. Put him in a separate cage and let him recover for a bit and if you don't want to keep him, rehome him. Birds that can't fly are nicknamed 'runners' and they can make the best pets ever. They are perfectly normal they just can't fly.
  13. Yep girls are definitely quieter. I'm swapping one of my indoor cocks for a hen, just so I can get a bit more quiet. lol
  14. What you are calling clearwings are just spangles. They won't be DF yellowfaces because DF YF2 have yellow faces. So they are white faces. Also if they were type 1 yellowfaces, there is a 25% chance of normal whitefaces occurring anyway.
  15. The birds flying overhead of the rabbits is quite frightening for them as it is like a raptor coming after them. Also the rabbits would be in amongst the budgie droppings too, which isn't the best for them. The rabbit will do fine in her hutch with her babies. You could also make another run for your rabbit that is separate to the aviary.
  16. I used to have 2 girl rats, a black hooded and an agouti hooded. Girls have much more get go than the boys, whereas the boys like to be lazy. I prefer the girls as the boy's testes don't look so nice lol. If I did get a boy I would have to get him castrated, but that also makes them gooier so that would be great anyway.
  17. Very cute. I used to breed abysinnian x peruvian guinea pigs. They were lovely.
  18. Nice birds. Hey I was looking at your soon to be suspended aviary and I thought, wouldn't it be better if you put it on its other side. That way the doors will be on the bottom and if you want to use them the birds will be less likely to fly up and out of them because they are on the bottom. I've found that birds are less likely to fly out of lower doors because they are not at their level already and it's a little bit more hard work for them to climb down and then get out than it is for them to fly at the same level they are already at. Just a thought. Your only problem would be that the doors don't automatically close.

Maybe you should take the bird into your own care.
  20. Thank you Yeah, I didn't mean to sound like a meanie. hehe. But it's all good. Yeah I agree you should definitely keep your eyes and ears and mind open when it comes to these things and question. You sound like a very sensible person. I'm happy your daughter is doing well. And I'm glad everything seems to be doing better for you guys now. I hope you have a fun day at the Pet show.
  21. Yeah but Aus has its awesome pretty places too. I love Queensland, it is so bright and green and rainforesty with lots of animals. If I had to live in Aus I would go there (sorry to other folk I've only been to QLD and NSW, I'm sure there are other gorgeousnesses over there). I'd also like to go to Canada.... (and Greece and Italy and Alaska and etc etc...). You guys get the awesome lightening storms. I remember when we flew to Queensland and about half an hour before landing in Coolangatta we flew through a storm. It was so bad the pilot was seriously contemplating turning around and landing in Sydney. I had just finished watching the first 7 episodes of Lost, so unpleasant images of crashed planes were going through my head. We couldn't land in Brisbane airport because lightening had hit it and it had caught fire. Eventually the pilot managed to land in Coolangatta and we got to our hotel to watch the most brilliant lightening display ever. It was so cool. It was just on sunset, with huge storm clouds on the horizon. You could see fork lightening strikes going off inside the clouds illuminating them from the inside and a pink glow from the setting sun shining onto them. It was so awesome. We don't often get fork lightening here and we don't often get awesome storms like that. It was so pretty. I didn't enjoy the part where I was in the storm , but once I was outside of it, it was great! Lol at us being dry in some areas. hehe.
  22. Viruses are not curable GB. There is no cure for any virus known to man. You can prevent them with vaccinations, but once you've got one, that's it. Only your immune system can stop a virus. When you have a virus they only treat the symptoms to make your battle with it more comfortable and in the hopes that you and your immune system succeed against it. That's why there is no cure for the common cold or for HIV. There may be one in the future, but for now we are stuck. It is a virus. It is a polyomavirus. In fact Polyomavirus is its proper name. I have seen electron microscope pictures of it even. We don't have it in New Zealand. Which is another supporting factor for it being a virus. It is also deadly to other species of parrot, so don't let your infected budgies come into contact with your other birds while they are contagious and probably never is better. The fact that other parrot species get polyomavirus (aka French moult) also tells us that it is a virus. Other parrots that catch it tend to die, budgies are unusual in that they manage to survive it. Just a side note: Dehydrated chicks will often drop their feathers and appear to have French moult, when in fact they don't.
  23. Well, I don't care what you do, you do what you like! If I wanted to do the same thing I would. There is no use going along with something you don't have the heart for just because other people think you should. Big giant hugs!
