Strange Eggs Going On In My Breeding Boxes?
Oxalates in brassica plants bind calcium. Brassicas are spinach, Kale, turnips, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts

My First Breeding Loss
Honey, you did everything right. So don't feel bad. Interested by the smashing of the egg though. Everywhere that I have read has said not to smash the egg, or the hen will die. I don't know why that is, but it is always written, perhaps to prevent any chance of infection. ??? I'm open to it. Sometimes these things happen and you can't do anything about it. Hugs Even though she was prolapsed, she was still egg bound. The membrane you speak of would be her uterus.

Strange Eggs Going On In My Breeding Boxes?
Misshaped eggs will indicate endometritis/metritis i.e. an infection of the uterus. They don't sound misshapened though. Could be a problem with the shellgland (uterus) or maybe metabolism or could be nothing. Who knows. Each hen is different. What kind of greens do they get?

My Visit To A Pet "super Store"
Yes that's true MB I hadn't thought about that. A baby that couldn't be looked after, or was aborted, because of stress from being moved, being in a pet shop, or cause of the other baby rabbits. Either way it was dead.

Wait a second! aren't reflections supposed to stay in the mirror????

My Visit To A Pet "super Store"
Maybe. Sure is weird though. It may have been a deformed baby. Anything. Can't say unless I can see it.

Sad News From Home....
I am so sorry to hear this. The biggest hugs in the world. We are all here for you to cry on. Hugs. May they both rest in peace.

My First Breeding Loss
It's not large doses that do it. It is supplements that do. Starting 2-3 weeks before breeding would probably be the worst time to start. In cows you should stop giving calcium supplements several weeks before birth so they can give their parathyroid glands a chance to catch up and adapt to the requirements that are put upon them. I have not had much experience with breeding. One hen became egg bound, but she was 5 years old when she did it and was a chronic layer (her first two clutches (and she had clutches up to 11 eggs) were fine). My other hen, who was 15months old, I did not give any calcium supplement to bar a cuttle fish bone and a bell (which they chose to use) had relatively large eggs but did not have any problems and it was her first clutch ever. It is just something that I wonder about and I don't think anyone would have trialled the timing of calcium use in budgerigars like they have in cattle. I should probably ask one of my professors, see what they think about it.

My First Breeding Loss
Honey, I sorry to hear that. Hugs Unfortunately its something that happens. Saffy became egg bound and even prolapsed her uterus, she managed to survive that and surgery though. This is why maybe we should start thinking about that topic I posted about previously. The one about too much calcium may actually cause a deficiency. Because all your hens had heaps of calcium supplements. I am just thinking maybe overuse of calcivet possibly. Build them up before breeding then step back off the calcium. This would be something you need to talk to your vet about.

Treatment For Mites
You can get mite dust . That will cover the whole bird, feathers and all. Make sure it is made for birds. I actually have some red mite dust. Have never needed it though, but I will use it to dust my nest box.

Advice Again Please
Ooo sorry Neat, I didn't realise. I like the mites idea. I have seen them like that at the base of the quill on turkey feathers before. I know cause I scratched them off with my finger nail.

Maybe you should hide the cage when you are training/playing with Rook.

Advice Again Please
Psittacine beak and Feather disease. Well if he has it, at least he can keep your other one company.

My Visit To A Pet "super Store"
That is weird. I would have thought that by now it would have rotted or mummified. Maybe he meant it was 5 weeks old? Did it look fairly recently dead? Stiffness tends to disappear after a day or two. Unless it was stiff because it was mummified.

Advice Again Please
Maybe she thought you were just looking at a blood feather? I wouldn't know sorry. :budgiedance: To me it looked like mites in the quill. The stress marks are the horizontal lines across the feather, where it looks weaker.

Vetstoria.com
I had a brief look at this website while I was researching for an assignment. It is aimed at the general public and has some good videos on it of operations, pet advice, disease etc etc. I thought I would share it with you. Vetstoria.com

Introducing Myself Jwancia
Welcome to the Budgie forums! Sorry to hear about Mac, he sounded like a sweety. Rook will come around. You sound like a very animal loving person :budgiedance: So does that mean you are studying to be a vet? I'm not sure what the Aussie name for the degree is. I'm doing a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Not long to go and then I will be unleashed onto the world, where cows can kick me, budgies can bite me, horses can double barrel me, cats can scratch me and clients can abuse me!!! Fun times ahead!

My Visit To A Pet "super Store"
That is abhorable!!!!! What I want to know is how the smell didn't give any ideas. ew, it must have been all mummified. It's bad enough it was hairless as it would be under 2 weeks of age! Bunnies aren't weaned until 4 weeks!!! Also the fact he had not checked on it in that time even to see if it needed cleaning out. That's disgusting! Report them instantly Neat. That's an RSPCA case!!! Starvation and neglect is a huge offence! And the fact he had not realised that the food (if there was any) was not being eaten. :budgiedance: >

Vitiamin C - Why It Is Needed
Vit C, I think, is also involved in collagen maintenance (or something in that area). A deficiency results in Scurvy, a disease where your hair falls out, your teeth fall out and your skin loses it elasticity and is itchy. Not the best for you, but totally reversible (unless you lost that tooth, lol). sailors in the 1500-1600's used to get it all the time. Students often get it (lol). Its from not eating your fruit and veges!!. We know someone who had it because they just ate pies all the time.

Vitiamin E - Why It Is Needed
White muscle disease is a deficiency in Vit E/Selenium. Because Vit E is an antioxidant it is especially required when muscles work. Because many muscles use oxygen to produce their energy they produce free radicals as a by product. Free radicals damage the surrounding tissue and antioxidants remove them from the system. If the animal is deficient in Vit E/ Selenium there are no antioxidants to remove the free radicals, so the free radicals cause damage to the surrounding muscle, which kills it. The lack of blood supply and fibrosis of the dead area causes the affected area to become white. Free radicals are why we age. lol. So the more raw broccoli you eat the slower you will age. :budgiedance: I think Broccoli has Vit E in it. Oh well it has Vit C, Vit K, Niacin and bioflavanoids so those are already good reasons to eat broccoli!!! lol. Plus it is yummy, especially with a thick cheese sauce.

Unsafe Everyday Things
I'm sorry to hear that jwancia. That's why I always wear barefeet whenever my budgies are out. So you can feel them before you put your foot down, should you put it down where they happen to be.

Trip To A Markets Brought Me 2 Tears
Good on you Neat. Those people were giving false information and selling faulty "product" (sorry that sounds horrible) and they were doing false advertising, selling males as female etc. Also not providing food and water is against the law, under the Animal Welfare act. See at least you prevented 6 people from buying an unhealthy bird and having their hearts broken.
