Yeah, I agree with Karen. Watch that it doesn't get infected, because it is quite a large surface area to have open and it's close to the bone. Woah. I just finished reading this post, then flipped tabs onto my 2nd favourite website and saw this. I immediately thought of you Splat. Here's the censored version (sorry and also thank you Griffon Ramsey and Luke Mckay)

Spraying Bird Cage
Spray paint has such a noxious smell, (I hate it, it sometimes gives me headaches), that it couldn't possibly be safe for birds.

Pro Biotic
Psittacosis is a respiratory bug, probiotics won't do anything against that. The idea that a bird's gut is sterile, sounds ridiculous to me. Everything they eat has bacteria on it, so some of those are bound to establish a hold in the gut. Also their faeces gives off the smell of methane which is produced by E. coli. The caeca is where fermentation occurs in the gut. Fermentation requires bacteria in order to occur.

It may not be water-soluble as well. Just keep doing as you are, sounds like it's working. Look up crop tubing on you tube.

My Lucky Streak Has Gone
No, I'm not a vet yet. We just get into the habit of calling ourselves vets early on. Tee hee. :bliss: It is going good thanks. I managed to pass all my papers quite well this year and I have just lined up 4 weeks of work experience towards the end of this month. I can't wait, it definitely beats sitting around at home doing nothing. Our course is 5 years long, with the last year being like interns, not long to go, entering 4th year this year . We get to start learning surgery and do more hands on stuff. I'm going to try get some work in the wildlife ward if I can (which is mainly birds), because they get harriers and albatross in there as well as budgies and other parrots, like African greys. When Saffy was in there, her cell mate (in the next incubator box over) was a cockateil and they hit it off. So I still have lots to learn!

Well via crop you know that you are giving the exact amount to that bird and they are getting it. When you put it in the water, you don't know whether they are drinking it or not and you cannot control how much they are getting. When you have a setting with many birds and you put meds in the water, some birds will drink more water than others and others less. I prefer via crop, much more accurate and reliable.

Well if I have read it wrong then I apologise.

My Lucky Streak Has Gone
Megabacteria is a yeast which is a type of fungus. I don't know if I should be, but I'm kind of offended by that comment. Vets don't get the government paying for half their stuff like human doctors and GPs do. That's why we have to charge. There are no government subsidies for vet medicine as there are for human medicine. A lot of vets actually go out of business because they don't charge their clients enough because they feel bad. I don't know if that was out of place and I read that in the wrong tone or not, but that's how I read it.

Don't Count Your Chickens
Did you ask them where the bird went? Did it die or did they take it?. You should tell them you are deeply disappointed in them that they could not take care of your birds properly.

When you go back to the vet ask about crop needling and get them to show you how to do it too. A crop needle is a long metal tube that you attach to the syringe. The crop needle is inserted into the bird's oesophagus and down into its crop. This way you don't lose all the medicine everywhere.

Ernie The Moth Chaser!
Yep, they will even try the cat. When we had a dog, our chickens used to try and eat her dinner right out from under her nose. Liv, ILoveSy&Cilla was saying that their chickens ate chicken.
