Just curious as to what people are using for their seed mixes for budgies. Do you buy premixed seed or purchase different types and mix yourself and if so what types of different seed do you mix together.

I buy a budgie pre-mix from the stockfeed place which I add a small amount of sunflower to over winter to give them just a tiny bit more fat while it is so cold.

It is a pretty standard mix I think, a couple of types of millet, hulled wheat(or oats, whatever they are), a little sorghum and the sunflower that I add myself

I buy pre-mixed from the pet supplies shop near by. I go for the finch mix rather than the budgie mix though, it's got a lot more variety in it. Looks to have a few types of millet, the little oat/wheat seeds, and a few others which i won't even pretend to be able to name. :P It's a nice clean mix and i've been using it for quite a while now. The indoor budgies get Trill Finch Mix which has even more variety again, i would get that for the aviary ones if i could get it in bulk like i do the other type.

I used to use regular budgie mixed with sunflower seeds but have now changed to finch mixed with sun flower seeds at a ratio of 20 kg budgie fo 1 kg sun flower.

I buy a Budgie pre mix, I changed to a new supply a few months ago, even though it has a bit less Canary seed than I like, but a couple of other places I was buying from were so unreliable I was always running out & they didn’t have stock.

It’s got a mixture of a few Millets, but not so much of the large white one, which other mixes had, as I don’t think birds like that too much, they love it if you plant it & feed the seed heads green, but don’t seem to like the dry seed so much. Canary seed & hulled Oats.

I buy 5 bags of the Budgie mix & one bag of Small parrot mix, which has Sunflower & Saffron, which I mix in. I agree with others often a Finch mix has more variety & I may buy some Pure Canary to add later.

It's not only the more variety I find appropriate it's the lack of wastage :budgiedance:

With normal budgie 1-2 kg would be wasted fo the hulled oats and so on... Now, everything gets eaten :D Less mess to clean up after and hopefully less rodents attracted haha!

I use a pre-mix (Volkman), but it only makes up about 30% of their diet so economical for me to buy instead of make my own. Ssome of the ingredients are white and red proso millet, canary grass seed, oat groats, flax seed, rape seed, nyjer seed, hemp seed. So far my birds far prefer it to any mix I've ever used before, and the seed is very clean.

I'm pretty sure it's not that kind of seed......:P It is a tough seed and I don't think my birds even eat it - they much prefer the millet, canary grass seed, and oat groats!

On the topic of hemp seed...it has been discovered that hemp is a very beneficial seed for budgies and show breeders are trying to source it in quantity to use.

Over here in the West our local club has started shipping over bulk Golden Cob Special Budgie Breeder. It comes in 25kg bags and is basically the Mannes mix with added Iodine, Vitamin A and D plus cod liver Oil. My budgies absolutely love it and there's no turning back for me.

I find that most produce stores stock it…it's supposed to be good, but it's one of the most expensive I think.

The mix I use is just over $30 per 20 kilo bag, but I think it's more like $50.

On the Hemp seed, yes it’s supposed to be great for birds…when I was young you used to be able to buy it at birds seed stores, maybe it was denatured so you couldn’t grow it, but it wasn’t a problem in those days…my favourite store was Austen Seeds at Sydney railway…don’t think there would be too many around now that remember that place, I used to love it had just about anything you could think of for birds I used to buy British Cage bird newspaper every week. About 1955…sigh…LOL.
