New To The Forum, Future Breeder
Hi and welcome to the forum You have some lovely birds. If and when you breed with them you should split the pair up into a separate cage to stop any fighting. I can't really see what the string toy is in the middle of your cage but I would be very careful with it and probably would take it out because budgies have been known to hang and kill themselves on rope and string toys. New Aviary Build/ Boston Lincolnshire Uk
We call them Exhibition (Show) or pet types not English. They got called "English" because of the changes that were made to the birds (size, Feather etc) when they where exported from Australia.

Who Are You?!
Hi JimmyBanks, welcome back I wish some of the others would come back! How long have you been a member of the forum for? 10th Feb 2012 so 2 years How long have you kept budgies for? I've had budgies for about 7-8 years but show type about 18 months What is your favourite mutation? Any type of pied and I have to add yellow face Blue or Green Series? I have to say blue even though I seem to have an aviary full of mostly green How many birds do you keep at the moment? 23 at the moment after loosing a few to illness What do you prefer Pet or Show type? Hmmmm I have both so it's like trying to pick a favourite child, but if I really had to pick I would say show What got you into budgies? I had one as a kid and wasn't allowed to get another so when I grew up and got my own house I got more and more and more. Thanks Jimmy that was fun, Nadene

What Do You Think These Chicks Are?
Plum eyes and brown pins means it is cinnamon and if neither of its parents are cinnamon it means the father is split for it. They are beautiful chicks and I love the white one. Keep the pics coming as the grow

Broken Feathers...
Hi Gunny and welcome to the forum. Firstly you should NEVER put new birds in with existing they should be quarantined for at least 4 weeks in case they do have a contagious disease. It could be a number of things, it may have or had mites and chewed its feathers or it may have a bad chewing habit (or another bird with it did), it could be a really unfortunate moult I would keep him by himself in a smaller cage and see if they grow back.

Cage Big Enough For Two Budgies?
They are great cages and it is fine for 2 budgies but you need to change the perches so they are running front to back not side to side so they have more flying space.

Male Or Female ....kiwibudgie
Some clever people (not me) can sex them at 3 days old. By 9 weeks you would be able to tell. To me yours looks like a boy that is starting to change, they tend to go a bit purple before they go blue and being a dominant pied it may not go completely blue. Others might have another opinion.

Male Or Female ....kiwibudgie
Young hens or hens out of condition their cere will be pale blue to white and will turn brown, young cocks will be pink and turn blue except some varieties they will stay pink. You do get the odd bird which can trick you, I had one that I was sure it was a boy in the nest and it ended up being a hen.

I've Never Seen One Like This Before
Kaz this is what I read, Any bird can have any two of these genes simultaneously. The implications for AYF breeding are as follows:- 2 green genes = Green 2 blue genes = Blue 1 green gene 1 AYF gene = Green / AYF 2 AYF genes = AYF (double factor) 1 AYF gene 1 Blue gene = AYF (single factor) 1 AYF gene 1 EYF1 gene = AYFEYF1 (a combination bird) 1AYF gene 1 EYF2 gene = AYFEYF2 (a combination bird) You will notice that a green bird cannot be split for both blue and AYF at the same time as that requires three different alleles and a bird can only have a maximum of two alleles. You will also notice the AYFEYF1 bird which is a combination of both AYF and EYF1(with the AYF features being slightly more dominant). I suspect that many of the birds on the exhibition bench today in Australia are this combination and this represents a significant issue of identification by both judges and breeders.
