My Plans For My Aviary
okay, it has been awhile since I've posted on my thread. SO here is my newest addition that I plan on incorporating into my aviary....somehow LOL sorry the image is so tiny - It's the sellers photo. It's roughly 2m x 2m x 2.4m (at the gable) It comes with pavers if I choose to have them, and as I have a spare aviary at the side of the house, I don't have to disturb my birds to dismantle their aviary. All I need to do is take out the two panels at the back of the aviary and connect the shed to it...again somehow I'll get there! I'm just so happy I finally have a shed that I can store things and but my breeding cabinets in

Brasea Auction
John's DF and Troy's Spangle I looooove! Troy has some amazing birds - he had a YF Sky Violet spangle that I really wanted but it went waaay out of my price range (this was last year when I got my DF hen). Troy has shown me a few of his birds and they are wow! Shame I missed the Auction this time - oh well there will be others! Well done on purchasing some beauties Dave! I'm sure they will do well for you!

Help With Sexing Please
Sorry I was mentioning the dryness for a hen's cere because Robbo mentioned that Jaws has a very dry cere. I should have stated that, sorry if I confused everyone.

Help With Sexing Please
It is normal for a hen to get a flaky cere - it usually means she is at the end of breeding condition - you should start seeing blueish white underneath. She doesn't look to have scaley mite on your photo. If you do take them to a vet, make sure you get an avian vet if you have one available.

I Am Really Really Worried
You can buy a spray called "Stop Pluck" (or something similar) if you're unable to separate the birds - that may help stop the budgie plucking. You can get it at pet shops, City Farmers, and other bird places

My New Birdies
I LOVE Valkyrie!! She is gorgeous!

Can Anyone Tell Me What Dalek Is?
He looks like a Cobalt Normal to me - was this photo taken with a flash? He could possibly be a Sky Violet Normal too but I'm swinging more towards the Cobalt. He's a little cutie

It Is With A Sad Heart
That I have to acknowledge the passing of my beloved Santa I found him on the floor of the aviary today, a sad little bundle of green and yellow - perfectly fine and healthy last night. Seems his neck was broken so I can only assume he had night fright and flew into the aviary mesh, or crash landed as he wasn't a super hot flyer. All I know is he was happy and healthy - in his prime with the ladies (and gents) of the aviary like a pig in mud. He was a happy healthy budgie who first took my eye in a thread posted on here from someone named KAZ who was selling exhibition budgies. I had never owned an exhibition budgie so this was a great thrill to be able to purchase my very own brand new "boofhead" budgie. I went to pick up my gorgeous boy and got the grand tour of this lovely breeder's birdroom and aviary. I was also gifted a hen, - my rather plump Mrs Claws, whom my Santa found great delight in chatting up the whole way home. And so my love for the hobby began. These two budgies, and Kaz were what started me off in my almost obsessive passion for the Exhibition Budgerigar. Since then, Karen (Kaz) gifted me more of her lovely birds to help me on my way to becoming a champion breeder (HAHANO not really - that is much MUCH more into the future ) After quarantining these other budgies, Santa thought it was his sole purpose in the aviary to check them all out, make sure they were up to his standards. Obviously they were because he immediately started chatting them up and doing his humpy thing with them (most were cocks but that didn't seem to be an issue for him ) His favorite was a little hen - a light green normal who seemed to match him with his humping eagerness, which for him was lucky as some of the other hens were taking a slight dislike to constantly being chatted up and mounted - was was also getting a few disapproving looks from the cocks who had taken a fancy to the hens and pairing up with them. Santa has always been my favorite - my seeking him out every morning and evening to give him little pep talks about how to treat the ladies, receiving his input and nibbles and giving him the odd cheek rub when and if he allowed it. I'm kicking myself that I didn't breed him and have some offspring of his to cherish. It is a sad day in the aviary - it's been very quiet. RIP my gorgeous boy, I will miss seeking you out for our daily chats, and your gentle nibbles.

Frequent Moulting
I don't know about other members' budgies but I know mine always moult when there is a weather change. We had a thunderstorm last Monday after months of hot dry and humid weather and since then, the budgies have started moulting. That being said, it is nearly time for their big moult anyway and the storm could have triggered that off. The ones that aren't moulting have gone wildly into breeding mode. Has your weather changed over the last few months? Sorry if that isn't much help - someone more experienced may be able to help

Confused About Cinnamon Chicks
I looked at that table before posting this Kaz That's why I wanted to know as he wasn't split anything but Rec Pied as I asked the breeder this morning. Thanks Nerwen and Splat, That's what I thought, But the breeder said he wasn't split Cinn which is why I got confused - the breeder would have to be wrong then, right? I hate doubting breeders So I'm not completely genetics dumb then?

Confused About Cinnamon Chicks
I'm confused, (not hard for me I know:rolleyes: ) I have a Cobalt (possibly sky violet) Normal/Rec Pied cock and a Sky Cinnamon Hen (pet types) They have produced 4 chicks - 1 Sky Cinn hen/rec pied, one Sky cinn hen, one cobalt (Violet?) Cinn cock and a Cobalt Normal Hen/Rec Pied. All cinnamons are visual too. The cinn cock chick is definitely a cock, and the normal hen is definitely a normal.... The confusing part for me is I thought a Normal Cock x Cinn Hen are meant to produce Normal/Cinn cocks and Normal hens?? Am I missing something? Or do I have the wrong information? The Cobalt Cock (sire) isn't split Cinn according to the breeder if that helps in any way? Thanks for helping to unconfuse me haha

Melanistic Spangles
Bumped for myself ahaha Daz, these are all your birds aren't they? I've seen these photos on other websites...

My Breeding Season
Would her blue suffusion contribute to the DF M Spangle look at all? Maybe like a poorly marked M DF? :wacko:It's all a bit confusing still. She did have another baby that was born but died - I'll have to check my photos but from memory it was starting to feather up normally. I'll try her again when it's a bit cooler and she's in condition and see what happens. Looking at the second photo reminds me of my hen - in certain light she gets quite blue, except for her head and wings. Interesting information, thank you Clearwing. I have been reading and re-reading articles written by Jeff Attwood, Barrie Shutt, the threads and posts on here and other websites.

My Breeding Season
Oh The breeder said she was a Melanistic DF. I myself have no idea how to check as she is a DF - do you know? Then I can check and let you know

My Breeding Season
Just thought whilst I had the time, I'd update you all on my three Spangle babies - now 5 months old. They are all meant to be purple ringers but I had blue rings so I used them. *WARNING LOTS OF PHOTOS* I recently took them to the Annual Championship Show for the budgie club I am a member of - I did quite well for a first time Novice Their mum - the White DF Melanistic Spangle came 1st for DF Spangle Adult, Novice Class and An unrelated Sky Blue Opaline Cock - blue ringer that I have, came 1st for Young Spangle, Novice Class This little man came 2nd Place for Young Spangle, Novice Class The lovely lady, who is my favorite, came 3rd Place for Young Spangle, Novice Class. This is the eldest, she came 5th for Young Spangle, Novice Class.

Some Of The Birds I've Bred
Gorgeous birds! Absolutely LOVE your YF Grey cock
-
Female Or Male
I say a male looking at the first three pictures. Fourth picture looks a tad female-ish but as it is a pied and their ceres are usually a bit confusing to me, I'm sticking to being male.

My Aviary....start To Finish
Wow 205! That would be loud in the car. Glad things are falling into place

What Mutation Are These Chicks
I think, and I am just guessing, that both those chicks may be Greywing Dilutes? They are cute little ones
-
Is He A Fbc Greywing Spangle?
I wouldn't have said Greywing. I too think she is a hen - and her Spangle markings come out as Cinnamon on my monitor. Both the birds are very pretty. I love the colouring of them

Interview With Rob Dunstan
Oh wow I didn't know Rob went over East. I'm quite sure I met him at one of the Budgie meetings - he was a member of MBC wasn't he Kaz? Love his interview - some very good advice and information there. Good to see the Spangles are a big hit with him as they are with so many others. They're my favorite too!

Breeder Code
Is that the whole ring code? I know BCV is Budgerigar Council of Victoria but not the other part - maybe try and contact them and see if they know who it belongs to?
