My Birds Are Unwell
Sorry to hear about your birds GB. Any loss of a member of your flock is devastating, especially when breeding Hopefully things go back to normal as quickly as possible Obviously I don't know too much and am still learning things so can't really comment too much about the topic. I just wanted to let you know I sympathise with you Just out curiosity, could you possibly put fake budgie eggs in place of the real ones? So that they don't get stressed by not having their eggs anymore? And you knowing the fact that they aren't real fertile eggs would mean that none would hatch and parents wouldn't pass on the Canker and Psittacosis? Again bearing in mind I don't know much, but thought maybe that could be another solution for the birds if they stressed with loss of their eggs? Sorry if that's the wrong thing to say. Don't want to offend anyone one, I won't learn if I don't ask though. All the best for you and your birds

Puffed Millet
Oh okay thanks, I'll try that and will let you know how it goes.

Puffed Millet
Thank you for your feedback, I greatly appreciate it. KAZ - it says on the pack that its a wholegrain that is flash-steamed to lock in the nutritional goodness without any additives. RIPBudgies is right that its like rice and popcorn. I'll give it a miss for the budgies - don't want to do them any damage. Maybe someone else can use it as its not something I'd eat

Puffed Millet
I was given a big bag of puffed millet and I was wondering if its okay to feed to budgies? I know you can feed them millet sprays - my budiges adore them, but I wasn't sure if puffed millet was appropriate for them? I couldn't find any info for it and its safety to feed budgies. Thanks

New Budgie
Thats IS good. When I'm ready to breed him, I'd like to try and get some Recessive Pieds out of him as I quite like them, though I'm not sure what hen I should pair him up with. I'm in the process of making a bigger aviary which I will be able to split into 2 flight aviaries and a breeding room. Once that is complete I'd like to start breeding my birds. I've just purchased A guide to Colour Mutations and Genetics in Parrots by Dr Terry Martin which I'm hoping will help me learn more about colours etc. Are there any other recommendations for books I could look at?

New Budgie
Thanks for confirming the colour for me! Good to see I'm starting to learn something haha even if it is something as basic as a normal budgie. ooh and being split for Recessive Pied - that's a good thing right? :P sorry

New Budgie
Hi all, I've had this cock for 6 weeks now in his own cage under strict quarantine to make sure he is safe for my other budgies. I am about to release him into my aviary and took these photos before doing so. My next door neighbor gave him to me as he had to cull his flock and want Is he a normal sky blue? or possibly a cobalt? I'm thinking more of a sky blue as I don't think he is dark enough for cobalt, but i'm still learning. He has a funny white spot on the back of his head that i've not seen on a budgie before. Is this a mutation? Spot on the back of his head Thanks for any help Amy

My Budgies
Thank you Renee, that makes me feel a tad better. And thank you Kaz for pointing it all out to me. I did have them quarantined and I do know its meant to be at least a month, but because they were so desperate, and I thought they would hurt themselves, that i did it. I'm still new at all this, and trying to learn. I'm sorry if what I have done has offended you all. I know better now and I guess the budgies wont hurt themselves will they?

My Budgies
Oh whoops i'll take her out straight away! So sorry! I put her in his cage because they were getting all worked up and looked like they would damage themselves. Eeks, gosh not a smart move on my behalf. I feel terrible. I'll separate them now
-
My Budgies
Thanks Renee I totally agree on keeping quarantine, but these two really looked like they were going to do themselves damage if I didn't place them together - I had even moved one cage to the other side of the house but well that didn't really work :emoticon112: haha Ooh okay, I shall write those down so I don't forget the colours - and if they do happen to breed, it will be interesting to see what colours come out of it. I will start a breeding log *excitement!!* I unfortunately don't know how old these two are - I've had Chiffon for two years, and the spangle cock for almost a week. The breeder I got him from said he was *approximately* a year old - not too sure he is though - i think he may be older. Bugalugs is coming up to three years old and Skylah is just over one year old, though she doesn't look like it - she was treated quite badly poor girl. And my other little hen/cock I think is quite young still. He/she still has the baby chirp to it and the baby play. I also don't know the colours of these three, are you able to help there too thanks!!

My Budgies
WELL!! Some surprising news! I have had my two new budgies quarrantined from Skylah, Chiffon and Bugalugs since I got them on Sunday. The problem I have had all week is Chiffon and the new cock have been almost giving themselves brain damage trying to see each other and get to each other through their cages. SO today I have placed Chiffon in the new cocks cage (so they didn't do themselves damage) and this is what has happened. I know it's not ideal to take them out of quarrantine so quickly but I thought it safe than them damaging or stressing themselves out. They've been feeding each other and preening each other all day. And I've noticed since the cock has been around, Chiffon's cheek and forehead feathers have brightened. I need to name the cock. any ideas? I also need to name my little blue one too but im actually not at all sure she's a hen now as her cere is turning blue. Also any one able to help me out with the colours of all my birds? I'm still learning so any info would be great Thank you! :emoticon112:

My Budgies
As promised, here are my budgies - my three original ones, and two more I got today This is Bugalugs before his Goshawk attack - handraised him since he was 3 days old - he is now almost 3 And this is him today - a few weeks after his attack - he is doing well, I released him back into the aviary on Saturday. He's still a bit skinny as I can feel his breastbone abit too much but he's picked up really well This is Skylah, my first hen whom was given to me when her previous owner didn't want her and was going to release her. I'm slowly bringing her back to good health. Poor thing was almost featherless, very skinny and had mites all over her. This is Chiffon - I rescued her from someone who was trying to tame her and clipped her wingtips through the bone and flesh. She gets a bit narky at the other budgies, and is very timid which is understandable considering what happened. But she seems to be doing okay as well. Now time for my new ones! I love these two - to me they are pretty and they both have lovely natures. But they both need names My New Hen My New Cock Both together I hope you like them - would love any advice, help, info you may have on my birds. I'm still learning the colours so any feedback would be great - Also sorry for the huge post!

Bird Of Prey Attacked My Budgie
Hi Everyone, Just wanting to let you all know that Bugalugs survived the night and has been eating well. I have given him is favourite grass seeds, his normal seed and some silverbeet - he has gone off his silverbeet but seems to be eating the rest okay. His leg is swollen still, but not as much as last night and he has even managed to give a few chirps here and there. I hope this is the good beginnings to a recovery process, but im still worried he may get an infection. He is having plenty of fluids too. I shall keep you all updated

Bird Of Prey Attacked My Budgie
Thank you everyone for your kind words. It has reassured me greatly knowing you think i have done the right thing. I shall put a lamp near him, and i will check his wound later on. MAybe change the dressing too, of course he will want minimal handling so he can rest, poor boy. He was so good, coming straight up to my hand as quickly as his poor little foot could take him. After 2 years of being in an aviary he still comes to say hello :bliss: To be honest I was totally shocked to see the hawk on the patio as it was in the end that has two sides enclosed with latice and one side enclosed with the house wall. I'd have thought the hawk would have felt boxed in there. I don't actually know how it picked up on the fact that there were birds in that section - its hard to see them - especially as the patio aviary has blankets around it (for covering up at night time - still a bit cold here. I have seen the hawk lurking on the next door neighbours huuuuuuge aviary and I shoo it away all the time. I've been thinking that I should call a ranger or something as i have a 2 year old who loves playing in the back yard (never know the hawk could swoop her!!) And I have two chooks who i let roam the back yard (Hi 5 for free range eggs!) I'd hate them to be attacked too. I'll keep a closer eye on the hawk - since the incident i haven't seen it back at ours or the neighbours house.

My Budgies
Thank you I hope to learn many many things from this website. And when I build my flock up, i'd like to start properly breeding certain colours. Well actually I think i'd like to build a flock of clearwings as i think they are so beautiful.

My Budgies
Hi Everyone, My name is Amy and I love budgies and breeding them. I have 3 at the moment - I've recently given most of my budgies away and am trying a few different breeding pairs. Im going to get another male - hopefully a violet as my neighbour has so many different colours and varieties. When I was younger my whole family used to breed budgies - and we ended up with so many different colours/varieties - spangles, opalines, greywings. I think there may have been a few lace wings and we even got a few albinos which was surprising. We weren't actively trying to get colours or anything. But when pairs partnered up, we set them up in breeding boxes and they went really well. Anyway, just thought i'd share a bit of info about myself. Hopefully I will get some marvelous information and help from this website Thanks for reading Amy
