Quiche...........a Gift For Dave Mcminn
Broccoli has been sprayed with chemicals to keep it fresher for longer And this can be harmful to your birds... That is why alot of breeders are no longer doing broccoli and other vegetables too from supermarkets... Other products which may have been affect are the prepacked salad mixes, EG crunch salad, spring salad, etc, those prepacked items... Hope that helps... Great to see they all made it safe Dave...

Understanding My Budgies
Yesterday I was lost in thoughts as to how I could better understand my budgies, know what it is like to be one... And after much thought, I decided that if I wanted to understand them better I would have to learn to fly...! Yes that right learn to fly... Well my attempt at flying did not go so well, as I went flying (in my case falling) down some steps I have in the backyard and as I hit the ground with a nice solid thump (like your Holden car door does) I realise my foot was hurting... Ouch...! There was no time to sit there and feel sorry for myself, as mummy bird (me) had to get back to her nesting box (house) where her baby (10month old son) was waiting for her... I soon realised my experiement was a complete success...! Yep you heard and read a success... I now understand my budgies alot better because I now have a sprained ankle so I walk around like a budgie with a sprained leg...! What would you do to better understand your budgies...!

Chick Mortality
Yellow belly is when a chick hatches with a yellow belly and will normally die within the first day of hatching... Do a search on here for it, that is a bit more info on it... Search is up the top in the menu bar... Alot of what you have written for the nests sounds like experienced hens or cocks... And maybe a little over crowding 5 chicks per nest... I find alot of hens can not deal with any more... I'm sure others can help more...

Business Advice For A Would-be Breeder
Yes it can be a costly hobby, my thoughts, but if do right all money she makes she should put it back into the birds, seeds, med's, new birds when need and only once she has saved the money... Some big breeder who have shown budgies for years and have a name behind them do make money... So it is up to you on whether it cost you lots or a little each month... I think you spend the most money setting up at the start of the hobby... Birds, aviary, breeding cabinets, holding cages, seeds, meds, plus than you have your every day costs of keeping the birds plus the time you need to spend on them...

Cec's Aviary Tour
To make it fair, everyone name was put into a icecream bucket and one by one names were pulled out so it was first in best dressed... I was 7 out of 9... We all got to look at the birds first together and pick who we wanted and hope noone else wanted it too... Yep 3 Albino's... Cec was saying he had bred alot this season that is why he had a few up, I think 10 albinos were up for sale... 28 birds in total only 3 didn't sell I think... I was looking for a Grey of some sort to start a nice Grey line and than Albino's but Kaz talked me into Albino's as I may never get another chances to get some of Cec's Albinos... I thought the Red ring was pretty good too and all 3 are pretty clean too, of markings... The cock will need show training if I was him at shows as he spent alot of the time run across the bottom of the show cage only at the last minute did he stand on the perch for me to see him better... But I'm sure they'll all show some good show qualities as they grow older...

You can take the hen out of the nesting box when the young is this old to stop her laying eggs as Kaz suggested yesterday on your other post...

New Egg With One Near Ready To Leave The Nest?

Business Advice For A Would-be Breeder
You can easily set-up a free website for your daughter to sell her birds on... I used freewebs, the address is www.webs.com you can upload a number of photos, customize the site to your needs and it will be big enough for your daughters needs for now... Than you would have to advertise your website in your local area to help bring in the business... Good luck...

Time For That Winter Clean Out...
Well, yesterday I spent all day cleaning out my breeding cabinets, cages and aviary oh and showcages too for the big winter break... And it was a good thing too having a bit of raining weather today in Perth... Light showers and a bit of a cold breeze... Double checked my records on all birds and updated too if needed... Health check and treatments for all... Anyone else finished up breeding and done their clean out...?

Hen Attacking Male
I've have a hen who does that, I find she is protecting her eggs from the male but with my hen she is fine with the male on a perch outside the nesting box... She just doesn't seem to want her male near the nesting box till the chicks are older... Has she just attcked him when he goes near the nesting box or she attacks him no matter where he is...? Is this her first time breeding, if not did she do it to the last male... She could be a overprotecting hen or doesn't like the male she is with... So the egg would be infertile in that case and she is laying because she has access to a nesting box...

Here's A Link With Doctor Harry And Budgies.
I have a friend, living in perth, who is studying to become a vet... If I remember correctly i think he said 4 yr course... The first 3 yrs you cover the generally care of alot of animals, not just dogs and cats... He has helped cattle give birth, the cutting open of animals some were frogs and birds, trips out to study animals in their homes, etc... In the last year he was saying you can continue to study to be a general vet or specialise in certain animals... Plus I think he was saying there are other courses they say study after too... He plans to become a Avain Vet, as he is a big bird lovers, well animal lover really...
