Melaleuca
Hi all, have been trying to find MELALEUCA ( paper bark) on safe woods etc. Does anyone know if the branches are safe for aviary. To climb/perch etc on in flight.

My First Aviary
Hi all, as I only have pet types and my aviary is a wire front and full wire flight. My greatest enjoyment is sitting on the patio watching my birds play. If I were to sheet metal around it I would lose this. As this lad is only young and Dad is helping him get started I expect it would be a big added expense for him. Maybe if he goes into show birds a bit later he may consider this. Unless he has a huge problem with snakes,I think normal aviary wire is okay. he could use the live trap type mices traps so his birds are safe from them. Just my opinion.

My First Aviary
Looking great, keep pics coming. As to snake, had a tiger snake"climb" up and wrap itself around a gateway into fowl pen, 6 feet off the ground. A few years ago now in rural area. Your cat is the best bet l.o.l they seem to hypnotise them or something, ours used to bring us LIVE ones for a treat.

Male Attacking Babies Just Out Of Box
Thank you for your reply Robyn. These are the only chicks. I have taken him away for a while and am about to put him back. Will the hen feed them on her own. Depends, if she is laying a second round, she could get aggressive with chicks. How old are your fledged chicks? Are they fully feeding on their own or is either parent still feeding them? If they are totally feeding themselves they may be safer in a kindy cage rather than with parents. Are you cage or colony breeding? I have had to take the Cock bird away again. I may have to try to hand deed the chicks. I have the mixture , just have to get them to take it.Chicks are just starting to feed themselves.i AM CAGE BREEDING. Hi Doggie, Dad usually feeds etc after fledging, shame he's being a pain. Mum could feed them to save hand feeding them. If you check to see they have food in their crops and see if Mum is on the job first, it would save a lot of work. Hope this helps.

Mid 2011 Breeding Journal
Hi Dave, maybe a lot of us don't comment but read through the journals to see how everybody is doing. And pick up any clues for ourselves.

Male Attacking Babies Just Out Of Box
Are there other chicks in nest box or only the two fledged chicks? Sometimes the males get a bit "pushy" with newly fledged chicks, I think they see them more as adults than their chicks once they are out of box. If he isn't really aggressive with them, they may be okay with a careful eye on them. Is he still feeding them now they are out of nestbox?

Double Yolker Eggs And Twins
HI Kaz, any update on double yolkers? Have you candled them yet? P.s just checked date they would be nearly ready to hatch if they were fertile.

Unresponsive Budgie
Hi Barry, it takes a few months to hand tame a bird. If you go to f.a.q. budgie behaviour, TAMING YOUR BUDGIE. That will give you an idea of how to go about taming him.

Double Yolker Eggs And Twins
Maybe the elongated shape of the egg may give more room for each embryo to develop. Fingers crossed for some chicks at least Kaz.

Wheezing Bird
Thanks Kaz., I have had the aquarius iodine in the aviary water,( 7 drops a litre) for all birds since I have had him. He hasn't become worse since I bought him but no better either. He's very active eats like a horse, but he's a big bird. If it was thyroid prob. would there be any other symptoms to look for?

Wheezing Bird
Hi all, I purchased a bird back in June. Ever since I got him he has been making a wheezing noise when he breathes, its louder when he gets stressed a bit. ( as when I enter aviary). I treated him with avamectin in quarantine, when I got him. He seems perfectly healthy apart from this noise with his breathing. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? In a human I'd say nervous asthma l.o.l. but don't know the birdy equivalent. if any.

What Are These?
- Some Chicks
Francis, patron saint of birds. (She's looked out for all her's now and future. l.o.l.)- Has Any Else Had This Happen?
Same here, I had one chipped like this, a while later I checked and found a dead chick thrown out of nest box. I think the hen got over eager and chipped egg but I'd say chick was a day or two early. To add, yes the chick has to come through the membrane first as it line's the shell.- Some Chicks
Now that's a wonderful bird !!!!- What Sex Are My Budgies?
another hint ? as birds don't seem to walk around the floor much I line the plastic tray itself with paper ( mine slips out if it's the same type cage) . Birds can't rip it up it's easy to replace and a much easier cleanup.- Some Chicks
Looks like Mum is doing a great job Kaz.. with your feeds and maybe the bigger chicks helping out shortly they should be great. - Some Chicks
