If it's Iodine deficiency, it will take a while for it to help. If he's not showing any other signs of illness just continue with the drops as advised by Kaz for now and see how he goes. I had a cock bird that needed Iodine and his cere turned brown. It was a few weeks before he returned to blue.
  2. Daddy bird seems to be in the nest box, but now I'm going to lose all 5 (3 of which are definitely fertile) eggs as I have no incubator and all other pairs have just finished hatching their chicks. Reading back through, would a hen become egg bound after laying 5 eggs? I haven't had this problem, I thought it may be something else . Maybe someone could advise for future info. If this is possible

Looking good Kochy, at least you look like you have masses of room to expand. I don't think an Aviary is ever "finished". They seem to keep evolving. l.o.l
  4. As a side thought is it possible the Cock may incubate eggs? if female is missing and he's been in box. Has anyone heard of this?

Well took a punt and added 2 white marbles to nest. Hen sat on them (they were warm) when I checked still no eggs.Still egg bummy, took her out of nest box into other cage with no box. Within 24 hrs she has lost the egg bum, no eggs. Still at a loss. Will try her again later to see how she goes. Good news with other nest (soft shell) she now has 5 eggs at least 3 looking fertile. Watching like a hawk because her mate is big grey that ate eggs last season. So far he's been really good showing normal "attentive behaviour" to hen but not going into box much but chats at door. Fingers still crossed !!!

That's the one Louise. As Kaz said 7 drops a litre. Thinking about it if it was air sac etc. and he's had it for 2 weeks or more he would be pretty sick so maybe the Iodine is more likely.
  7. It sounds like you have a sick bird Rashu, take him completely away from other birds. Put him under a lamp or something to keep him warm. Don't know the medication you have but if it's for poultry you would have to be careful of your dose as it may be too strong for him. I suppose anything is better than nothing but don't give him any more showers though just keep him warm and see what others recommend. Good luck with him, it's hard if you have no vet. help.

Could be respiratory infection or air sac mites. Either way he will need treatment a.s.a.p I give mine Avametic 1 drop behind head at first sign of illness. warmth etc. I know others use different things but you would need to know what he is suffering from. Do you have any meds on hand?

I'd also check your eggs to see they haven't been damaged. I had a cock last year that got at the eggs and hen took to him. He's still got a bit missing from his cere but it healed without any treatment. Or you could just have an over protective hen. How long before eggs are due to hatch?
  10. He's a beautiful boy sweet pea, just keep offering veg it will take him a while to try them.

Don't know about cord but if it's coloured maybe the dyes could be toxic.

Thanks Maddy, don't know what to think at this stage. Maybe being a new breeder and having laid 3? soft eggs that may be her clutch size for this round. Don't know whether to leave her and see if she starts round 2 or remove her and try again later. p.s further to this if she has finished this round, so to speak. Can anyone advise how long she is likely to take before laying again, when she hasn't been sitting?

Me again, nest 1 that had soft shell egg, now has 3 normal looking eggs. No sign of fertility yet. Nest 2. Laid 3 soft shell that I know of. She still looks very egg bummy, hasn't had an egg soft of otherwise for 6 days, she's a new hen. I just read about internal layers on onother post. Does this sound like she may be an internal layer? or could she be laying and eating eggs? no sign of this either but she spends some time in nest box.

I say vent away Kaitlyn. Better to let it out here than "blow up" with in-laws because you have bottled it up. l.o.l.

HI, If you look a few posts up from yours you"ll see a pinned article Poopology etc. read through that and see if that helps. or go to f.a.q section.
  18. Bit like the "delicious tasting" cat food etc who tasted it to say this? At least you can see what you are getting with seed. Seed plus fresh veges and greens will do my birds. When I can get them to indulge.

Yahoo one normal egg. Fingers crossed.

Hi Maddy, your breeding room and birds look great. Good luck with it this season.
  21. If your hen laid with no probs.l maybe it was the Cock you could have tried hen with another cock instead of returning both. Just a thought.
  22. Good news, when you think of it because, they seems so young, it's only normal they will continue to grow and fill out. It's probably just like a new baby putting on weight. Keep an eye on them for any other problems and let us know how they go. Complete with more pics l.o.l
  23. Really sorry about Piccolo, is Cosmo in same cage? If so and shows no sign of fighting etc Piccolo could have had some sort of seizure and died. I had one fly into aviary from flight screeching and fell at my feet dead. I don't think you could have done anything to save him. I don't think it would be harmful, just clean up cage and keep an eye on Cosmo for any signs of ill health. If Piccolo had been ill you would have noticed this, seems more like a stroke/heart attack type thing.
  24. Sounds like she's ready to lay, she could look egg bummy for quite a while before she does lay. I wouldn't remove nest at this point as she would have nowhere to lay. Don't rush into doing anything, nature will take it's course just keep an eye on her and see she doesn't look ill etc. when she does lay she should lay alternate days until she's completed her clutch.

Thanks for that Kaz. I'll try mine now, they may get some benefit from the soil.
