Hi Shann_rk, Thanks for the info. as stated mine have cuttlebone etc. I do give them grass (seeded when poss). I usually wash all soil etc off before I give it to them but I read that in the wild birds get Iodine etc from soil around grass roots so don"t know if it's safe to give it to them soil attached. My birds that were slumped are both fully recovered it was a few months ago now. I've added the calcium to caged birds water so fingers croseed that will help.

Hi Nadene welcome, looks like your off to a good start already. Nice chicks keep pics coming.
  5. Ditto F.T. if it was not allowed on this forum Kaz would have said something. I think moving in to THEIR house may cause problems, hence the it's not clean enough etc. If possible I think I'd try to find another house. That way they can disapprove if they like (of the housekeeping) but would have no kickback.
  6. Hi Gennahill, Well his crop looks very full, on your other post you said they were 3-4 mths old. In this picture they could be even younger than that. They still have the baby bars which usually moult out about 3 mths. Maybe he's just getting used to feeding himself and "stuffed" himself a bit. I'd say if he's active and well I'd keep an eye on him, check his droppings are normal, and see if he settles down in a couple of days until he knows the food is there all the time. Could be like puppies, " I gotta get it before the other fellow". See what others think.

Thanks for the reply's, Kaz my birds are all free flying in aviary and fully wired flight, until I pick out the ones I want to pair up. I don't think I can add much more "stuff" for them. Can't understand why they seem to be lacking. Can you overdose on calcium? I've added it to cage birds daily since I found first egg but didn't know how quickly it works. Would making the dose stronger harm them? I had those couple of birds that slumped on perch, don't know if there is a connection. Thanks Bird Junky, maybe one thing is counteracting the other? Seems like a new prob. arises each breeding cycle l.o.l.
  8. Hi Stevie, I had a cock bird,(new) last season and he ate the eggs. The hen was then attacked, I think because she was protecting nest, Cock still has piece out of his cere from her fighting back. If you could see blood or egg on one or the other, to tell which is responsible you could separate them and try her with a new cock. I'm going to try mine again and see if he's okay now if not he's gone.!!!

Hi all, have had 4 pairs down for 2 weeks or so. One nest has 3 eggs, older exp hen. 2 days ago found a soft shelled egg on floor of another cage, new hen, to-day she a laid another off perch again soft shell. 3rd nest found soft shelled egg on floor of that nest, this hen had 1 clutch last season. I have never had any soft shelled eggs before I have cuttle fish, shell grit, iodine & calcium bells in aviary, plus I added liquid calcium to water a couple of weeks before caging birds. They get the usual greens etc I don't know whether it is just a coincidence that 2 nests are laying soft shell eggs but what can cause it other than lack of calcium? How long would it take for liquid calcium to take effect if it's that? I have it in breeding cage water now also.
  10. He's a lovely little chapppie hope you have fun with him.
  11. Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead. It sounds like a great backyard plan. Hope we get to see pics as it progresses. Sounds like your neighbours are pretty complacent about the whole thing, whether they have kids or not the should think about future developments. Good luck with it all hope you get the aviary at the end of it.
  12. Congratulations and hope the rest of your pregnancy is just as exciting.
  13. Hi Stace, saw your post the other day, could not help but thought others would reply. I suppose by now second bird would be sick or worse if it had same infection. I read somwhere about the vomiting etc if you check f.a.q. it might help.

Do you mean his toes are all clawed up or twisted etc. If they are clawed up and he's favouring his leg maybe he has injured it somehow. Check for any injury, see if he's still eating active etc or if he's sitting fluffed up and ill looking.

It could be just that he's a bit stressed from the sale move etc. put a bit of white paper in bottom of his cage and check to see if it gradually becomes normal droppings.
  16. Just reading through the posts. Sorry about your bird ford mob. Re seed. I buy my seed from a produce store, nsw mid nth coast. 20 kg bag for $25.oo. It's a lot cheaper than supermarkets etc if you have access to one. Check the quality of seed first, I had one brand that was ####t not worth the bag it was in, full of dust and stubble etc.(not from produce store) Now I have great clean seed at a good price. Worth the 30 km to get it.
  17. Good luck with the floods Splat and anyone else affected. It's either a feast or a famine isn't it, no happy medium. fingers crossed the levy's hold and nobody loses their birds or homes.
  18. Hi, Ford mob sounds like bro might need a role model to learn from., how about giving Mum & Dad a break and take on the challenge? You could get bouquets or brickbats as thanks but either way you tried. Sounds like your going great guns Dave keep up the good work.
  19. You say Fiancee not husband. If I were you I would set a few rules before the big day. If it's this bad now what will it be like then. Set up a united front with fiancee and say what happens in your home is your business (which will show which side of the fence fiancee is going to sit as well). When visiting them you go by their rules, same applies in yours. Stand up for yourself now or you will be forever bossed around. my thoughts anyway.
  20. I have had an odd hen or two lay an egg off the perch. Even when there is no nest box's, have just gone into aviary and there is a broken egg under perch's, don't even know which hen has laid it.

Hi b.j No a blueberry ash is a tree I think it could be native. If so it should be okay but check it out further before using it

Sorry to hear about Frankie, they each take a little bit of us with them when they go . I don't think the seed mix would be the cause. Yes they need greens etc but that is a general budgie mix. If he had other issues I think that was more the cause of his death. Most people with a pet bird would use the bird mix's from supermarket's rather than special mix's. Good luck with finding a new birdy friend. P.s why not check out community notices and see if you can find someone in the local budgie club? Maybe they can give you some help with finding breeders near you.

Nice boy? Is he Cobalt or violet, hard to tell from picture. very nice either way.
  25. Hi, sounds like the council needs a shake up call. If you can prove others have changed water easements etc surely your council is at fault. Not just for your aviary but the whole home's benefit. If others yards are affected as well maby a joint letter to council may help. Before you go to the expence of re-doing your yard I'd check out that avenue.
