  1. Wow, kind of breeder to give you a couple of starters. Mine are going great (only pet type) but seems like I've bred nearly all Cock birds !! Just when I wanted a few more hens. I have some new chicks hatching in 2nd round. Wasn't going to go another round as it seemed to be getting too cold but they have been fine. So far.
  2. Sorry you lost the little one, it could have be shock as well as the injury. Are they nearly fully feathered?
  3. I'd say leave chicks with Dad, including injured chick if it's not too badly hurt. Dad should keep feeding them, although at 4 weeks they should be starting to eat for themselves. Leave dish of seed for them to try as well. Keep check to see injured chick is okay. I don't think you can do much more than you have. Good luck with hurt chick see how you go.
  4. Don't know any pointers on show birds Nadene but they look lovely, especially the spangle. Good luck with them, hope they turn out some great chicks for you.
  5. Hi, looking at these pics I'd say they are fine. Keep posting pics though .

Thanks Rhi-Rhi , she is very nice, at least I think it's a she l.o.l I'll wait until she's a bit older before I decide.
  8. Well on a smooth surface as in first 3 pics of chicks they look splayed. I'd say only because of surface. Do they still look splayed in nest box like last 2 pics? They look okay in those 2 pics if they stand with feet under them in nest box I'd say they are okay. My splayed chicks looked like your no 2pic of chicks WHILE IN NEST BOX. See what others think.

Welcome, everyone is always ready to help on here.
  10. Very pretty, could only guess at mutation, others will know. Funny how the camera changes the colours isn't it.

Hi, yes your in the right spot. You can post pics of your birds on budgie pictures or breeding diss. etc.
  12. If 4 /7 had the little bugs you could say the others will be infected as well. Could be some kind of mite, if you have mite spray it wouldn't hurt to treat them with that. Unless you really know what they are it's a bit hard to treat it. I would probably give the remaining birds a drop of ivomectin as well (bird strength from vet) and see if you can identify "the bugs" somehow. Hope this helps.
  13. Really hope Chip responds to treatment quickly. Glad you got him to vet a.s.a.p. should help a lot.
  14. Eucalyptus are native to Australia and safe for budgies, the spots look similar to a fungus some of our gums get. Don't know if they would affect birds, they love to chew on the branches. Eucalyptus acts a bit like an antibiotic for birds. Don't know if I would give them the affected leaves but branch should be okay.

Welcome Geb, what I can tell you it's addictive so be careful, once you see tiny pinky's come out of the shell your hooked.
  16. Thank you all, It was very satisfying to know he was saved. I worried Mum would not feed him etc but she carried on as normal. He was a bit behind the others fledging, I think maybe he was pushed aside a bit but he's made up for it now.
  17. Hi all, I had about a week old chick break it's leg, tangled up with chicks with splinted legs for splay. I got layers of surgical tape, one on top of the other and laid leg on it. Did the same for top of leg. Eased the tape down over break to hold it it place. Trimmed off excess tape. AND prayed. Foot was frozen but good colour. Left it for about a week. Eased off tape and it seemed to be healing so left tape off. 1st picture afer I taped it. second picture front view chick now. Friend said just put it out of misery.!!!. Look what I have now, with a little bit of t.l.c. I feel quite pleased with the result, if I do say so myself. l.o.l. He's perching and foot is fine.

Thanks Flip-Trainer, nearly all pied or spangle this time.
  19. Hi, Well they don't need privacy to breed. If they are in breeding condition and they bond it should happen. If conditions are right. You said male has "light blue" cere? I understood for males to be in breeding condition cere should be a strong bright blue. Maybe he's not quite ready to breed, see what others think. They will preen each other just in aviary they don't need to be a pair to do that.

Thanks for that Finnie, didn't even realise. Now I'll have to try to edit pics before I put it in my record.

These are more pics of first 6 fledged. 1 st My Albino. Back view. next three chicks all similar back with white flights. 1 2 3 Last 2 are from eggs fostered to same nest as Dad isn;t a good dad. He has eaten eggs, fed first hatched whole seed etc. but these two made it. Mum laid again yesterday.
  22. Welcome from Oz., great to see this is a world wide addiction.

Thanks Nadene and Finnie, I've taken first 6 out into kindy cage as Mum decided she didn't like the kids underfoot anymore. She attacked one last year so I thought I'd get in first. I think she's ready to lay again.

Gee, even if they look healthy if you didn't quarantine new ones, I think I would give them ALL old and new, a drop of Ivomectin to be on the safe side. If there is any unseen problem it may help.
  25. Hi Maddy, sorry your 2nd round has turned sour as well. Trying to think what may do this Have you given breeding cages any different seed etc to non breeders? If adults are okay does it just effect chicks? Could it be connected to what food breeding cages are getting, I think splat had all sorts of trouble last year and it turned out to be a seed issue. Have you used any meds or sprays etc around nest box's? It's awful to get them looking promising and then this happens, worse that you can't pin point what it could be.
