If you got baby from same shop I'd give it a dose of Ivermectin for a start, that should get rid of any worms etc it may have. Quarantine it as well, is it older than your first chick? I don't think that one was old enough to be sold in the first place. She probably kept the bird so you couldn't take it to anyone who may investigate the shop. Good luck with your new pet.

Hi and Welcome to both of you! we all learn new things about our birds all the time, can't say "I know all about budgies" with any conviction AT ALL l.o.l

Some pretty birds there, looks like it was a bit hot the day picture was taken.

Not all pet shops are "bad", but some just don't have a clue and the info they give out is very detrimental to the welfare of the birds, not just Budgies. I have a good local pet shop who buy my surplus birds. I have been in several times, just to check out their knowledge and set up and they really do know about birds, they even breed some of their stock of parrots themselves. Unfortunately I have been in to some that are shockers.
  5. Looks like they enjoyed their holiday. Doing well they'll be flying before you know it.

That's what I think as well. As Mum isn't an ino. Dad 's gene's produced this chick. As it's a visual Ino it should be a hen as hen's can't be split Ino. (that's right isn't it, if we have started to get the genetics thing!!!!) l.o.l
  7. Thanks Nadene, so far so good with chick no2 . Hope that's all the hitch's I have this time.
  8. Hi, glad your chick is improving maybe he was just starving, now he's had a few good feeds he might gain enough strength to develop his wings. If he doesn't look like he's improved enough for the aviary he would make a lovely pet for you.
  9. robyn replied to Nadene's topic in Breeders Discussion
Sorry Nadene, maybe first chick dying in shell set up an infection which affected 2nd chick.
  10. So sorry Hanna it's awful that you lost all of them. Before getting any new birds, I would clean aviary/cage completly renew any branch's etc in case there was any infection there. Don't let it put you off getting more birds we all have bad patch's of one sort or another.

If you only had her for a week she must have been in that condition at pet shop. Some people should not be able to have pet shops. Un -suspecting people pay good mooney for pets only to lose them within a short time, it's disgusting. Don't blame yourself, you realised she had a problem and tried to help her. I'd go back and let the pet shop have a serve for selling a bird like that in the first place. Good luck with any others you get. Not from that shop though !!!!!
  12. Well 1st chick hatched on 2nd. found it dead in box?????? Looked normal had a bit of crop milk in crop, just dead. She had 9 eggs. Dad is always sitting in box with hen so maybe new chick got squashed or something. New chick in that box today, fingers crossed this one is okay. In 4 nest's I have 9, 10, 5, 5. eggs not expecting all to hatch but most look fertile. 1 more due today.

Hope things have settled down now Nadene, chicks look great. Is Ino the youngest chick? If so, new Dad must be split Ino, if Mum's not Ino (if I've worked it out right).
  14. Hi after reading Jenny's info. maybe soluble calcium in water would benefit Dad, for future breeding and baby. If chicks bones can be strengthened if may turn out okay. because chick is sitting eating it may have been hungry in nest box as well. Jenny may have nailed the reason your other chicks did not thrive, maybe Dad could not keep up to nourish them.
  15. I think if this is his first clutch and you have had all these problems with chicks I don't think I'd breed him again just yet. See how your last chick turns out, if it picks up and learns to fly normally it may be just an injury to Dad that causes his lack of flight. How old is your last chick? has it feathered up normally etc. if it still has problems maybe there is a genetic problem. What a shame when his chicks sound like lovely colours. How long have you had Dad? do you know if he was in aviary or caged before you bought him.
  16. They are looking great. Keep up the good work.
  17. Hi, he looks normal in picture. You said he had beautiful colours in his first shot. Is this his first clutch or did he have some others? If he had others, what were they like, could they fly etc. Sometimes birds that have been caged in small cages for a long time can't fly very well. I bought some show culls and had to "teach them to fly". I would hunt them off perch's several times a day to make them use their wings, they learnt to fly but ones with heavier body weight have a bit of trouble gaining height etc.

Wow ! maybe they all decided to be surrogate parents. As long as the chicks don't get OVERFED. l.o.l . There is always something new to hear about.
  19. Hi Budgie_mad, you may find your hen starts to lay a second round of eggs about the time the first round fledge. If she lays before this sometimes she will attack chicks still in nest box. If you want second round you can wait and watch. If she attacks chicks you will have to move fast or she may even kill them. Maybe remove chicks to floor of cage so Dad can keep feeding them, (at about 3-4 weeks old that is) that's worst case event. They can have 2-3 rounds in a row. 2 maybe, but 3 is taking a lot out of parents so not advisable to go more than 2. After a few months rest same pair may come into breeding condition again. It's up to you and your set up if you breed them again. Instead of removing eggs that seem overdue. I'd mark those eggs, then you will be able to tell any new eggs.
  20. Hi Emily, any update on little Charlie?
  21. Welcome to bbc.new Budgie lovers always welcome.
  22. We have limits on size and amount of sheds/aviary's etc we can have. Know what you mean about plovers, great watch dogs though. We had a pair hatch 3 chicks in my front garden, for 4 weeks we knew whenever anyone came close to our home.

Hi, if your colony breeding it could happen. Your lucky 2nd mum is feeding chicks and not attacking them which is good news. How old are the chicks?
  24. As Albino is sex linked,if paired with Albino, I'd say you would, maybe, get female Albino's but males would be split creamio not Albino. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? as hen's can't be split for sex linked
  25. Great news, good tip from Hilly to keep in memory bank, one never knows when it may come in handy.
