First Time Breeder
Hi Breeding Sky Blues is a good idea! They are beautiful birds. What colour are you birds now? If you post pictures we will be able to tell you if you have the right genders and ages of the birds. Also, where do you plan on breeding them? Do you have an aviary or cage or something?

Diy Breeding Cabinet?
Our local Mitre 10 is pretty good with that. Those plans would be great, if possible. Does the cages you built have a place for a tray to go? I use metal trays, and find them easier then vacuuming, because my cabinet will need to go outside. On that note, doesn't plywood warp ?

Diy Breeding Cabinet?
Thanks PJI. I am still contemplating it. I don't really like breeding cages that are higher, just a personal preference. Just trying to imagine if it is worth building a whole cabinet for a few extra inch's..... but they would be much happier as well. The nestbox is on the outside as well. I would make a divider for the middle, so that when the birds have finished nesting and the clutch's are out, I can open it up. I will also open it up if there isn't a pair on the other side, I will only have it full for the peak of the season. Lots of things to consider, aye?

Diy Breeding Cabinet?
Hello I was just wondering if veneer on top of chipboard is okay to use for making a cabinet of breeding cages? I am looking at makes a set of 6, and I really don't want to start from scratch. It isn't possible to paint over veneer is it? We have a cabinet here, and if I divided it into a bank of 6, the measuremnts would be 15 high - 23 wide- 11 deep. What do you guys think?

Are These okay?
I grew up not having to medicate animals much, just because we really only had cats, and growing up on a farm my mum's family never did any special with them as in worming etc. I am now learning about all the medicine's more, but I really only want to keep to the basic's, I don't want my birds to be surviving off drugs, I want my stud to be strong and healthy. Everyone euthanises different, this person used to be a nurse, so she just gets a needle and injects them. She prefers it this way, and so would I. Any animal in general is not savable until it is dead. An animal is savable until it give's up on itself. Once an animal is to far gone, they just shut their body down, no matter how hard you try. He has treatment for cocci in his water. I am not going to let this bird suffer any longer. And no, that last sentence is absolutely not true! I am very sad to say it was one of the bird's I got from you GB, and he was very special to me as he is partially tame and one of my better birds. I had big plans for him in my TCB line. You breed nice birds GB, and even though you can't see him proper, he is a good bird I would have used. I dont care what kind of animal it is, they are always worth trying to save.

Why would someone come to euthanase a bird they havent as yet assessed. The bird may be able to be saved. The person examined the bird, but didnt have the right tools to deal with the bird at that moment, and was busy. People I talked to on the phone recommended I also do it, just from my description. it is a sad ending, but the bird is to far gone. He has no sense of up or down, or how to use his wings. He isn't eating properly and has dropped 2 grams since yesterday.

Violet Pied?
the reason for confusion may be because of the yf affecting the blue. The bird would come out a soft buttery yellow, an inbetween colour of the green series and blue series.

Tcb And Opaline
I personally have all opaline TCB's bar one, I prefer the look better BUT I believe it also makes it easier to breed them as a show variety as the Opaline helps to make the body clear of suffusion.Just my opinion though.

Are These okay?
Just wanted to inform everyone that after a long day of visiting and chatting to numerous breeders, someone will came around and euthanise the bird tommorrow afternoon, if he has not passed by then. I will keep him in a show cage until then. I have also set up all of my medication for the future, and restocked in various things. I will be using coccivet for coccidiosis , s76 for worms and scaly, vetafarm spark for emergencies and solivite d for breeding birds. This plus the bird bread, and getting red pannicum, charcoal and grit will be the birds diet (plus soft food and veggies)

Violet Pied?
not that I know much, but that actually looks like a DF spangle with very strong suffusion.

Well I will take out the soft food then. I had to crop feed him last night, and I seemed to be putting more, and more, and more in ! His crop wasn't swelling much. He was eating seed and drinking last night, but I couldnt feel anything, that was why I crop fed him. Even after 4ml of it, I could still barely feel the food in him. I woke up this morning to find the tank walls splattered with slimy seed. Canker? Does cocci have the same signs eg regurgitating seed? I have some stuff called sulfur remedy, than can be used for caecal coccidiossis. Two drops to the beak twice a day.

I will do it at the same time next time. The bird weighs 34 grams, but he is awfully skinny. I gave him some cous cous, egg and carrot. I think I will syringe feed him some hand-rearing mix tonight,

it takes one drop on the back of the neck under the feathers.........thats it. How are you applying it ? With a syringe. You said in another thread you should apply two drops if the bird is over 30 grams. "how big are your birds. If larger than the 30 gram bird they will need two drops" So why do you think you have to wait till it soaks in ? I assumed you did, otherwise the drops may just run off because the bird's neck area isn't as big as two drops of it. Does it really matter? The bird is in a tank in our living room, where the heater is.

Thanks Dave. I just took a bird out of the aviary, he is very fluffed up and sick looking. He has scaly around his mouth a little, so I did a drop of invermection (is that what it is called?) and will do another once that soaks in. I am worried about him though, I have a wheat bag under him. I ran out of my coccivet, and I was planning on getting some Monday (club meeting night). I don't know if this guy will last until then? assuming it is cocci...

Yes, it is a bread. It wouldn't be everyday, it would maybe be a slice or two a week. Obviously if I saw they were getting overweight, I would not feed it as often. If I thought that they could have more eg a slice a day, I would change it accordingly.

How cold is it where you are and have your birds just moulted as well ? In the last week, night temperatures have been about 10c and daytime 18c. All the birds just moulted and are loosing all the loose old pin sheaths, and unfortunately I have had two die. One was today, he was very skinny and hadn't kept up with the moult. The other one had been looking not to flash for a while, and the moult just seemed to finish him off.

Thanks stace, I will add a few carrots to the mix Vitamin A deficiency is not a sole cause of staining above the cere. More often than not its respiratory issues. I know that respiratory infections can also lead to this, but I overlooked the area and I cannot seem to find anything to be aggravating the aviary air?

Are These okay?
I am looking at making some bread for the birds. I have recently been reviewing my birds different vitamins they get, as I noticed a few of the birds have staining above the cere. (Vit A. deficiency) I have slightly modifed a recipe I found, and I was just wondering what you all thought of it? It seems like it will be fairly wet? Is there something I can add to make it more like "bread"? Ingredients 2 Cups finely ground oats 1 Very ripe banana 1/3 Cup wheat germ oil 1/3 Cup vegetable oil 6 Large eggs 2 Heaping tablespoons of canned pumpkin 1 Heaping tablespoon of applesauce 1 Cup of mixed vegetables 1 Cup of cooked or canned pinto beans 1 Cup boiled brown rice 2 Cups corn meal 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup of pecan 1/4 cup of each, pistachios, sunflower seeds, almonds 1 cup roughly chopped cherry tomatoes 1/2 cup of lima beans 3/4 cup peas 1 tablespoon fennel seed 1 cup chopped parsley 4 Tablespoons baking powder

A Little Help Needed With These, Kinda Overwhelmed Lol
how on earth could you mistake this bird for a recessive pied ? Um I don't know, maybe because it is a pied bird? I can't see it's iris' , and I am don't specialise in pied's or anything. I was only having a guess. Ratzy, no offense or anything On the rare occasion I do clip my birds wings, I normally do them longer, that's all! At least you did them with sharp scissors and their not all ragged and patchy? Also, is the cinnamon grey in the second picture a cinnamon or not? Just wondering
