How To Create A Rainbow Budgie?
Hello everyone. I woudl like to get some rainbow chicks in my pet-type aviary, and I was just wondering what hen I would go about purchasing to achieve this in 1st generation (one pairing, chicks straight up). My understanding of a rainbow budgie is: -Blue Series Yellowface Opaline Clearwing. The cock bird I have is a YF II Sky Blue Opaline Spangle. Am I able to achieve this in first generation?

why you asking that s-q the mother is clearly light green I never said the mother wasn't a light green? I asked if her tail was green. Normal light green budgies have blue tails.....

I'm Worried About Marigold Again.
Ratzy, you need to sit down with your parents and talk to them about your birds. You need to make clear understanding of what can and cannot be done. You need to remove the egg and the nest box right now. Marigold is sick, and right now the worst thing for her to do is lay eggs, even if it didn't involve internal egglaying (or what ever the sickness is) You need to rest the poor bird, she is worn out. Whenever I make a series choice on my birds eg. buying a new aviary, going to an auction, I make it clear to my parents what I would like them to help me do, and ask if it is alright. Just the other night while I was helping Mum peel the carrots, I asked her to not go into my room as often as I had a sick hen in there. Also to not touch it, open cage or anything. I made it clear it was a sick bird that needed the lamp on, and to be left undisturbed. She agreed to this once I explained a few things and reasons. This way, you are also educating your parents knowledge on birds. I don't mean this in any type of offensive way, it is just a pity when a bird is sick and some people do the wrong thing without knowing it or being told about it.

Sneaky Dilute
It makes one think what hidden genes are lurking in their birds

What Is This Type Of Budgie Called ?
Would you guys say he is dark green or olive?

Sick Hen
I weighed all my birds before breeding. She weight 31g. Her partner weighed 33g. They are only pet-type birds though. They were my only pet type pair I cabinet bred, because of not enough space in my colony bred aviary.

G & G 2010/2011 Breeding Season
It is? Last time I checked with my husband he said I'm the one who has to deal with the bad stuff... What you're saying is something that is a stereotype. Out of me,my family and my friends that I know of, there has only been one person who's partner "copped it" and that was because she had Prenatal depression . If someone came on here and saw that you had written that, they'd be devastated - being depressed would be bad enough, but to think that you're causing someone grief would make it so much worse. it's not something that you can always control If a bloke was to cop it - there is usually a reason behind it - depression, Hormones, emotions, etc. No offence, but until you have actually experienced pregnancy (assuming you haven't because of your age, though I know it can happen), its probably not something you should say - even if it is meant as a joke because alot of people including myself take that seriously. Majority of us are nothing like that at all. Sorry if my post offends anyone at all. Sorry Amy. I didn't mean about the blokes copping it as part of women being pregnant, I meant it as the poor budgies copping it. We are all badmouthing them on her If budgies could read, they must be offended

Sick Hen
Thanks Kaz and Dave. Last night her head was going quite floppy and she was shutting her eyes when I crop fed her. She hopped back on the perch and was screaming when I rattled my fingers on the wire, but she was quite sleepy looking. EDIT: The hen was found dead (on her back) in the hospital cage this morning

Sick Hen
Hi guys. I pulled a sick hen from breeding this morning when she was found on the ground fluffed up. She is quite skinny, and so I immediatley crop fed her hand-rearing mizture, lucky it was mixed up for some other birds already. I did it striaght away because I REFUSED to loose her. I once found 2 budgies with no food in breeding cabinet, the hen dead already and the cock bird hanging on by a thread. I froze, and I didn't get to him in time to crop feed him. But anyway. The hen had a pooey vent, and she wasn't flying. She would give me a hard bite ( ) though. After crop feeding I clipped her vent of pooey feathers, but looking back now I think it may have been because she was sitting on the ground. She was then put in the hospital cage with a warm lamp and heat bag under her. And food. She has improved since this morning, but I had to feed her again tonight. She was picking at the food, not much though. She has 3 chicks, and I am wondering if maybe she has been giving food to them and not keeping for herself? The cock bird is feeding them now. okay, so for a re-cap. - Not flying, eating, perching this morning. - Pooey vent and skinny. - Crop fed twice - Has heat helping her - Has become more active, and is perching tonight - Is squaking/carrying on tonight but not this morning - has picked at a bit of food - has no discharge/visible sickness other then a bit fluffed. I can't get to a vet until Monday. What do you guys think?

G & G 2010/2011 Breeding Season
Hah, it's like pregnant women. Poor blokes, copping all the bad stuff. I agree with the cocks being annoying though. If mum is only on a couple chicks (3 or less) I normally let her do the feeding and cock bird goes back into the aviary.

Too Many Chicks Dying
How can you fight dehydration if you think the chicks are? Because some of my chicks are looking like that in my colony breed situation. They have fresh water, but would putting a couple drops in the beak be okay? or maybe spraying nestbox air for humidity My exact thought

Baby Budgie Health
Are its legs splayed maybe? I had a splayed leg chick that was leaning on one side, kind of like you mentioned. I gave it a drop of calcivet in the beak, and I put a makeup sponge on its legs for the spalyed part.

Cast-iron Birdbath, Is It Safe Or No?
You can get bird baths from cheap as chips for $30. They are bird approved and safe

I'm Worried About Marigold Again.
Agreed Maybe you should invest in a small aviary? I have one for when I started getting series, a small 1m squared one. It helped the birds stretch their wings and let them forage on the ground. You could also get more birds, or maybe breed seriously if you wanted It isn't fair for the birds to be cooped up in cages. Sure, maybe 3 or 4, but once your flock getts to big (6?) you really need to let them fly.

This Round's Breeding Journal
Wow. I definetley did not think that 25 + days have passed since I put the birds in. I didn't record the date I but them in. But. I HAVE A PINKY! In nest one. Mum is super feeder, Dad is new to it though and he was looking a little rough with the chick, tucking it under alot etc. The hen will quickly put him in place, I know that. I will keep an eye on it though. Not sure of hatching, I didn't check nest last night or this morning as I was out late, but of the 7 eggs, I think 6 looked fertile! I went out to candle them and little bub was there. So I didn't get a proper look. Pair 2 looks like a clutch of clear She stopped laying at 4. Pair 3 looks like 3 out of 5 fertile. I may foster some of pair ones into pair 2s nest, if she looks like having a big clutch.

G & G 2010/2011 Breeding Season
Cra*..... Sorry Nubbly It must be frustrating when you have fantastic birds, and they all seem to act up in the nest. But you do need two to tango, so the cock birds are needed. Will the chick survive? If he does I assume he will have a foot deformity?

Will A Tame Budgie Breed ?
Being by himself for to long will NOT make the bird "forget" how to breed. It is in their natrual system, their instinct to reproduce. It is a old wives tale. A bird is going to reproduce.... it is their natrual instinct. I think you should keep trying and hope for the best . I have now had two success stories of birds that are bonded to me breeding. My gorgeous boy, Squeak, has bonded to another hen in my aviary and they are on eggs. He loves coming for kisses at the wire, and as much as he loves sitting on me and talking in the aviary, when he breeds I do not go in as much, or try not to socialise as much. Normally once a day, maybe two (when they have chicks) .

3 Pairs In Colony Breeding
Thanks, I have been watching. Mum only plucks down thank goodness. Well the oldest two are being raised and tamed by me, and I have moved a couple of the oldest from the larger nest into the single chick nest. Those last two eggs, one of them hatched but I htink it got suffocated by the other 5 or so siblings in the nest. One egg to hatch still. 3 in that nest, 3 in the other. The chicks get cropped 3-4.5mL about 2 or 3 times a day, depending how their crop feels. Normally in morning, lunch time and before bed. Here are some pictures of my mischevious little buggers. This is their little house : YF Opaline Spangle Blue Don't pretend....Us ladies all know their favourite hiding places! ( Don't mind my chin, I was looking down ) Opaline Cinnamon Spangle Blue. Oops a daisy! He likes sleeves I am a little ticklish when he does that!
