  1. There's that toy and still long enough to hang a budgie. I lost 2-3 that way. Kaz, I knew you were going to pick up on that. It is the same picture! Don't worry, that toy is long gone! But it is good to keep mentioning it so someone new doesn't come along and think it's an okay toy.
  2. I've been very excited, lately, because my boy Kevin has begun to talk!!! Of course, no one else has heard it, and they think I'm imagining it. But for a long time, when he chats to Sorcha or his toys, he has made "speech-like" noises. Then the other day I distinctly heard him say ".......pretty b--...." He said it two or three times. I can't make out if the second word is boy or bird, I call him both, so it could be either. Needless to say, I've been stepping up the amount of time I spend talking to him, in hopes he will say more. I really never expected a talking bird amongst my rather large flock, but you never know. This is quite exciting!
  3. Have you checked in the couch cushions? We have an upholstered chair that can take in a lot of things between the arm and the seat cushion, and you would never know they were there if you didn't fish in there really deep. (The remote is always going down there.)
  4. I let about four weeks go by this time before I trimmed Sorcha's beak. It got quite long: I was a little overconfident on my 3rd time trimming, and I accidentally cut too short. Barely at all, but it did bleed a little. Right away I put black pepper on it (didn't have white handy) and I think that helped it to not bleed much. The next photo shows it with blood and pepper. It's not a pretty sight. But within a couple of hours, she looked clean and fine again. Next time I will have a better feel for how short is too short, so I'm sure it will be okay. Might just be happy to leave it a little long, next time. Here's the after photo: Don't worry, it's been several day since this photo was taken, and she is fine, eating as normal, doing well, for her. (She's always quiet and doesn't play much.)
  5. Just to be on the safe side, I would not even think of removing the eggs until well after they were due to hatch. Many forum members have told how they thought their eggs woudn't hatch, only to find a few day later that they did. I would just leave them alone, and wait. And wait. And wait. Do you know the exact date the last egg was laid? I would wait at least until 4 weeks after that date, because even if the early ones are infertile, you don't know which ones were the last laid, and they could be good for a long time, still.
  6. Hi, welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are getting hooked on budgies!
  7. Hi Lisa211! Welcome to the forum! I hope you stick around. There is a lot you can learn here, and it is fun. If you haven't already, go to the faqs section. There are a whole lot of topics you can read there about breeding. And the welcome center is helpful, too. -Finnie
  8. So Hannah, how did the trip go? Sound like Nibbles had a great time. How was the weather?
  9. In Phoebe and Bailey's nest there are four. In the other nests: Colleen and Sean have 7 and Finnie and Patrick have 6. (17 in total! )
  10. Don't worry that it is going too well, Ratzy. GB assured me that pet types do their job well, so just expect it to keep going along like clockwork. Don't expect a problem before one turns up. It looks good to me!
  11. Your welcome, Ratzy. Yes, it's been snowing all day, and expected to keep on all night. Good thing tomorrow is Saturday! My husband and son got the car unstuck without me, so I get more computer time. But we are supposed to leave in an hour for a dinner event at our church, tonight. We are hoping it's cancelled, but one of our daughters is already there, so some way, we need to get her home. Fun. I have more pictures, so since I have more time, here they are: PB#1: PB#3: PB#4: I just realized that my photobucket has all the babies in backwards order, so I think I messed up their pictures in my last post. I will have to go back and check if they are right or wrong. And I don't think I actually have any of baby 2. Oh, I am so not good at this technical stuff!
  12. "Egg"-citing!
  13. okay, I've been sick, so haven't come on here till just now, for today. Phoebe and Bailey chick #4: (PB#4) PB#3: PB#2(?): PB#1: That' all I have time for right now, gotta go help hubby get teenage son's car unstuck from the snow. (Having a blizzard, tonight, expect 4-8 inches, got at least 4 already.)
  14. I'm sorry for your loss. It seems he had a good long life for a feather duster. He sure was beautiful. Good job, Liv, for taking such good care of him. We will all miss him. -Finnie
  15. Congratulations, Grant! I love how you can see her tongue in there!
  16. why do you say this is not avisable ren if you have two very well marked good sized birds with good carictoristics and you pair them up and get df doms mabe they not showable but when put with a normal all chicks will be dom so this getting you ahead in your dom pied breeding most times the markings come out perfict as they carry the perfict marked gene Agree with GB. Not everyone breeds for show and you must remember that when advising about breeding. No, no, no, no, no! I didn't mean it like that! By all means, pair 2 Dommies together and produce DF Dommies - the only problem is that they do not look like Dommies and so can be very confusing for the uninitiated. A very good point, which brings us to discussing Phoebe, the hen in nest #2, who is paired with Bailey. I always thought Phoebe was a double factor dominant pied. But the breeder I bought Bailey from (on the right, above), she though Phoebe looked like dom pied split to recessive pied. I'm not really sure why. Maybe because some of Phoebe's wing markings go further down her wings than you would expect from a DF dom pied. So to figure out Phoebe, I paired her with Bailey, and if she is DF dom, then 100% of her chicks will have the dom pied factor. If she is dom/ recessive, then half of her chicks would be dom pied, and the other half would be split for recessive pied. This is where Bailey's mutations come in. He has a pied spot on the back of his head, which isn't visible in the picture. He also has one clear flight feather on his right wing. (Barely visible in photo.) Visually, you would think that he was normal/ rec pied. But the breeder said he threw dom pied chicks when paired to a normal hen. So we think he must be a badly/heavily marked dom pied. I have worked out Punnet squares based on the different possibilities, and I came up with the following ideas: a. If we get a DF dom pied chick, we know that Bailey is dom pied. b. SF dom pied chicks don't tell us anything, there are bound to be some no matter what. c. If we get dom pied/ rec pied combos, that tells us that ONE of the parents has the recessive pied gene, but not which parent. (That is, if we can tell the difference between a DF dom pied and a dom/rec combo.) That of course, is the original question about Phoebe. d. If we get a normal chick with a recessive pied spot, then we KNOW that Phoebe carries rec pied. (Because we already know she doesn't carry normal) e. And if we get a visual recessive pied chick, then we KNOW that both parents are split for rec. pied. None of the four chicks is normal, so we can rule out possibility d, and we don't have to worry about looking for pied spots, either. I'll post some pictures of the chicks, but I think they are too young at this stage to determine much. Chick #2: Chick #3: These are the best I have so far. But they are outdated, the chicks are older, now. So I will have to go down later and get some better pictures.
  17. My connection must be bad. When I click on these links, it takes forever. One came up, but the next one said the page could not be displayed because I had internet connection Problems. Duty calls, animals must be fed, I will check back tomorrow. Thanks anyway for the links Amy.
  18. Great. There is more than one sort of dommie pied? okay, we might as well dig in. What are they?
  19. I was going to give it a try, but the pictures are too small, and I can't see enough detail. However, upon scrutinizing them as closely as I could, I think I count 5 different birds there. Some look like they could be DF dom pieds, but I can't see them very well. The very last bird on the bottom right looks like a sky blue opaline. And the yellow one doesn't appear to have red eyes, but I can't tell whether it has iris rings or not, nor can I see his/her cere very clearly. How about some bigger pictures, Nikpendar, of front back and cere of each bird. That would help a lot.
  20. Yes, I'd say Patrick is a Green series Clearflighted Dommie Pied, in the blue series the clear flights are completely white okay, so we've been discussing what type of Pied Patrick is. And we figured that if he is a combo, then he won't have any normal gene to give to his offspring. Well, here is some evidence: This chick appears to be normal, with no pied markings at all! (Unless someone out there can point out pied markings that I am unable to see.) Which means Patrick must not be a combo pied, but either dom pied OR clearflight pied. Here are mor pics of the chick: And some more pics of Patrick: I know these arent' the best pictures for the purpose, but I think they do show the extent of his markings, and that his flights are a lighter yellow than his body. I can look for more if needed. So, the big question is, what do we think Patrick is now?
  21. I can understand an emergency animal clinic not wanting to go to great lengths to save an animal that was brought in with no owner to pay for the care. But I would have thought they would at least have done the basics, and TRIED to save it!
  22. No. Have you ever camped at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore? Is that in the US? Haven't been to the US Have you ever seen the Mona Lisa in the Louvre? OH GB! The little girl you were has my complete sympathy!! . I have SEEN the MONA LISA at the Louvre!!! Have you ever been to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany? (It's the big famous white one in so many pictures, and the Disney Castle was designed after it.)
  23. I have a question. Isn't the reason we were confused about Alfalfa being mauve or green because she is a YF TYPE TWO ? And Mortimer appears to be YF1? So doesn't that rule out double factor yf1 with a white face? (Unless Alfalfa is split to yf1, of course)
  24. OH GB! The little girl you were has my complete sympathy!! No. Have you ever camped at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore?
  25. I can't see the cat face I need help. Wait, wait, if I squint and let my focus go blurry, I see the cat!! This topic will be obsolete whenever I change my siggy.
