Marine and Tooties Journal
Well I was going to wait for tommorrow and test two eggs at the same time, but I've been wondering about it since monday and the news that the eggs are most likely infertile. So I candled the first one....... I hope I really am seeing some red lines and not just visualising some up from hope. I will be checking that one again along with egg two. edit for today (17-02) - I candled the eggs again this time with two offsiders (mother and aunt), again i could see the lines in teh first egg and my mother agreed. The second egg......had lines as well They seemed a bit stronger but then this one hasn't ben interpted from the brooding like the first one. Both of the others could see the lines in this one. and egg number four is here on time again.

Low Fat Seeds
http://www.thebigcarrot.ca/images/oats.jpg That is what the oats look like, the tan long ones. I think that is the best way to go. Treat it like a treat which is healthy in small doses.

"the Ultimate Cuttlebone"
Me too Bea I really don't like the idea of the pepper one, would that really be safe for our birds? Yes cuttle bones are needed, but a lot of the time the budgies will not eat it uless breeding, while others love it all the time. It still needs to be in reach to eat when the feel like it. I myself would reather stick with normal ones they I know just have the minerals and calcium in it that they need.

Mayo, Juli & Bambi
So very cute:D It's great they way they are all happy to sit in your hand. lovey is right with the colours, I think Myo is a sky blue while Bambi and Juli are cobalt blues. Julie is your only girl out of he group. The fact the others are not opaline means they are males.

Khepri
Ahh the joy of the yellow face gene I can see the blue in the first picture so very cute That yawn one is wonderful.
-
Males Or Females?
Split to opaline will not look any different to a normal (if there isn't any other mutation in play) This is just becuase the breeder knows the history of the bird. Ahh yous should be easy to sex, any with the same wing markings as dad (same body colour on wings) are females. Opaline also makes the head markings lighter so it seems Juli could be opaline and so female.

Males Or Females?
Yep that's right Hurdy :budgiedance: Now tot he first question here what gender. It does seem a bit early to tell, give a few weeks and you should see a BIG difference. But I would lean towards male for the last two, because of the raised bumps around the nostrils. Males tend to have larger nostril holes and a more dimpled cere, where as a females is slightly flatter. This is 100% to go on there can be difference with that.

My Quarantine Cage Isn't Empty
Wow what a stunner :budgiedance: I like Kiran for him but both are great names. Yes he is a diute- a grey wing. The green on the body is from the yellowface gene. Since you talk of him being more blue than he looks in the pics I would look at mauve (a blue grey) sicne he looks grey to me.

Yeah Baby!
:budgiedance: actually it does look like my sisters thumb ( a bit) Glad he has found another part of you to love Bea.

I will Be Daz. At lest she is still on time, if she was having trouble with the eggs she wouldn't lay it on the due date and around the same time as the other. (well only becuase I had a feeling it was laid sometime after 12)

Low Fat Seeds
The same sort of seeds are in both but the Finch mix ( and I would think the canary one too) doesn't have the hulled oats like the budgie one which is like mars bars to them. Mine eat all of them first before the rest.

Marine and Tooties Journal
Thankd guys Yes Danny could feel the egg this moring and I double checked with him if I should stop her now with the breeding or not and he siad just to keep watching her and let her carry on with this cycle since budgie don't like to stop easily and laying egg over the place has it's own problems. She might have a highr risk of egg binding. I got fresh seed from pet stock on the weekend thankfully unopned so I when back today and got the finch he told me about (see food forum) and gave them that and the crummbles I got from him. Plus they got snow pea spourts today as their fresh food. They are going to only have one clutch. It's not as if there isn't any chance of hatching just lessened around 35% Once the food in the big cage is ready for changing/refilling they are getting the Finch food too, looking at them now Pie is a bit on the plump side and Jangles as ALWAYS been big.

Low Fat Seeds
Need to keep you budgie lean? Or even loose wight but they will not even look at pellets? Give then Finch seed instead, this is the tip I just from from my vet today for Tootie. It is lower in fat than the budgie mix.

Marine and Tooties Journal
okay unlike daz the rest of you didn't know Tootie was off for a vet visit today since she was sneezing each morning (until I made the appointment ) It's not the best of news but not the worse. At lest the sneezing isn’t cause by any bacteria or virus. Her cere is a sign she had a Ovarian cyst, and the vet was surprised she was able to pass an egg. Plus she is overweight being a show budgie so she is now (along with the other birds) being converted to crumbles (or pellets) rather than the seed, plus with her fresh veggies each day. This plus the cyst plus the egg (he could feel it in her body) was causing her to lose a lot of space to breath with in her tiny body causing her to pant with heat and sneeze. I feel so sorry for the little girl. With the cyst there isn't a high rate that the eggs will NOT be fertile. Add that to Marine and his mating techniques and it's a really low chance of any hatching. At lest I know once she loses some weight she will be better and feel better.
