Canardly Miss
Ascot Today at 1.35pm Race 2. She is top weight and starting favourite. She is racing over the distance she is bred for for the first time. There really is nothing in the field to beat her. But it is racing and things happen so no horse is ever a cert. My selections for this race are 1st Canardly Miss 2nd Street Value 3rd Rosmopolitan 4th Marvon Star

Biggest Show Of Australia?
Could this be a case of instead of moving forward that it could well be a step back and create more problems than it solves. How many people were involved in this decision in the first place and how much real though went into it..

Biggest Show Of Australia?
No that's it. The birds are young birds only bred the preceeding year. They get one shot.

Biggest Show Of Australia?
The ANBC National show is where all the states comes together. Wether it is the biggest not really sure. As the national there are 22 classes resitristed to 14 birds in each. Total 308 birds. I am sure that in NSW and/or Vic major shows would top that number.

Light Green Opaline Spangle Hen X Skyblue Spangle Cock.
Yup. All cocks will be split Opaline though. The Light Green is already split for Blue as you have produced a blue bird. As for the pied. I can only say Recessive Pied at this point.

Grewying, Muddy Clearwing Or Dilute?
No Neville there are plently of Clearwing around of the standard with the clean wings. I think what is happening is that when folks (usually beginners with no understanding of genetics) try to increase the size by using Normals they produce birds with heavier wing markings. They show them on the bench and are told they are Greywings. As they don't know any better they then bred them as Greywings or dump them off to others as Greywings. I don't think problem will ever go away. As for the second bird. I disagree. The body colour is too strong for Cinnamon to be present. I bred Cinnamon Clearwings and Cinnamon Dilutes. The Cinnamon does not express in the same way on a Clearwing or Dilute the way it would on a Normal. The tail is not necessarily to dark. As I said the photo is dark and as such has darkened the colour of the bird including the tail. Also if this bird is the result of continously breeding in a Greywing line it be modified because of it.

Grewying, Muddy Clearwing Or Dilute?
Lost track of this thread for a while but found it again. Sorry but I am not going to agree with Nev on this. Bird no 1 - badly marked Clearwing Bird no 2 - Greywing Bird no 3 - Opaline Dilute Lt Green. I think the fact that the photo is a little dark is making the Dilute look darker that it really is. Also the cheek patch is way lighter than the bird in the same photo.

Microscope's
Yep use to use one when breeding before and will do again. Would like to get a better one eventually though.

Renee that was a really wild guess but unfortunately wrong. The bird is a Darkwing(sf) Dilute Light Green I know some said Grey Green but I am not worried about anybody getting that wrong because of the quality of the picture. For those who don't know what the Darkwing factor is. It is a dominant gene and so found in single or double factor form. Can be found incorporated into all budgie varieties but will not show up on all. The effect of the gene seems to halt the process of dilution of the melanin. On a Normal Green bird it does not show up at all. I bred these in Dilute Greens and Cinnamon Dilute Greens, occasional a blue series.

Migrating Budgies.
Good bit of research there Pearce. As for the migrate bit. Budgies don't migrate in the true sense of the word. Unlike other birds who move from north to south, continent to continent, budgies only move between food and water sources. One example of migration is a bird that comes from Russia all the way to the Kooyong in Australia. I read a scienticfic article about sleep in birds and mammals not too long ago. Extremely enlightening and I will see if I still have it around as it had a nice little list in it.

I don't have a rear picture of the first picture but here is a rear picture of a relation of his. This picture is of a Cinnamon version of the other two. If your looking for a hint they are in the standard and for a great many years they were in the wrong class until the genetics were worked out.- Diluted (but Not Dilute) Clearwings.
Gina, What you have going on the photos are Dilutes and Clearwings. Both are also in baby feather so true characterics have yet to manifest themselves. As you know I bred Clearwings and Dilutes for 20 years. Colour was always selected for and I bred Clearwings from the following paraings use in my stud. Clearwing/Dilute x Clearwing Clearwing/Dilute x Dilute Clearwing/Dilute x Normal Normal/Clearwing x Clearwing/Dilute Normal/Dilute x Clearwing/Dilute I even had a small family of Cinnamon Clearwings especially for my Black Eyed Self breeding. For Clearwings or Dilutes which have been changed by the other allele I use the terms Clearwing modified Dilute or Dilute modified Clearwing. These are more acceptable terms in genetic circles. Strangly enough I found the Greywing is the least affected of this allelic series.- Figure This One Out Peoples
- Council Proposed Ban On Birdkeeping
Well that is just ridiculous. I would be attending the council meetings and voicing my concern. I would consider a vote of no confidence should this idea gain momentum. I have kept pigeons....noise? What the? I have kids in my street that are far noisier that anything the birds can come up with.- Canardly Miss
Grasa Express did not do so well in the last race. I don't think it would be too long to nomiate for the next race. Generally if something is amiss I get a SMS within days. The fact I have heard nothing is good. This filly is very well bred. She is by Verglas from a mare called Rippling Echo. Related siblings out there are Russian Playmate and Sheenasaidgrey, the latter who has done very well. We have been taking things steady with this filly, she is a little thing but has a ton of guts. She is goning to be a 1200 to 1400m horse at this stage. I will let you all know when she races again.- Canardly Miss
Well Chikky did very well. We are all very happy with her run. She jumped a little slow, but she does that. 2nd last all the way and it looked like she wasn't goning to get a split. They rounded the turn, a wall of horses in front of her. Then a gap opened up, Allan Kennedy pointed it out to her and away she went. Romped home to fourth place 5 lengths behind the winner. She ran the second fastest time over the last 600m (58.09). Considering the distance (1000m) is too short for her she did extremely well. We did not expect a win and given the distance we would have been content for her to run mid-field, after all it was her second start, but first at Ascot and against such seasoned horses. The trainer is one of the best in WA and the jockey is one of the leading apprentices. Both were happy with her run. A Saturday race will be coming up in the not too distant future.- Spangle To Spangle Pairing
I like that Cinnamon hen in the middle there Kaz. Very nice indeed.- Help With The Tail
Everybody has pretty much answered your question so no point in repeating. I would like to add however that if you ever decide to pull a tail be very careful to pull it out straight. The tail feathers are quite large and tough and the follicle can be damaged.- Mutation Guide
That is not a bad site actually. Terminology is a bit misleading in some cases but at least most of the mutation pictures are accurate. I disagree Kaz. Although this site does have a lot on information it is not all correct. The photos in the mutations topics contain photos that are not always photos of birds for that mutation topic. Beside lean2078 was asking about a book. One should always have books around as for some people they are more portable than a computer and they are always online.- Mutation Guide
The book Daz have highlighted for you I have number of copies to dispose of. All brand new. Soft cover $60 + postage Hard cover $70 + postage I reduced them as I need them to go. PM me if interested.- Bush Budgies
Kaz I don't really trust pet shops etc to have what they say they have. Reason is that unless the law has changed somewhat very few people held licenses to go and capture wild stock of any species, especially in WA. Besides I am not after buying them as I need too many for the research I am trying to carry out. These are bush budgies from a local breeder. He also sells at the Avicultural Society we and you are a member of....you may be able to contact the bush budgie breeder through the club. I wasnt suggesting you buy any from Swan Valley, but they are there to look at. Swan Valley isnt exactly a petshop. Petshop is not quite the correct term, I know just couldn't think of anything else at the time. Swan Valley is just to far to go at this time. As you know money is tight and the past weekend used up a lot of my petrol budget for the next month. March/April is a busy time for me. Those places that sell birds are not always up to speed on stuff and at the end of the day are there to make money. It is not uncommon for them to advertise small green budgies as bush budgies. It is done all the time but I bet if they were challenged they could not provide proof. If I went in to buy a "bush budgie" then that is exactly what I want. Not a look-a-like small pet type. It is false advertising and they can be fined. The ultimate answer to my query is simple but unobtainable. If I had the money and the appropriate licenses I would head out bush, trap a flock of budgies and systamatically work through about a 500 to a 1,000 of them making notes of what I was looking for and taking photos. I only need to find one bird with what I am looking for to get my answer.- Bush Budgies

Besides I am not after buying them as I need too many for the research I am trying to carry out. Liv, I am sorry but that statement is just not true. Mutations have been spotted in the wild many times. Infact on Christmas Day in Canberra in the southern suburbs a yellow, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo was seen and photographed amongst a flock. Mutations in wild stock appear regularly but not all are adapted for survival usually due to lack of camoflague. The mutation I am looking for in not a colour one but a marking related one. I know it is in the captive show type stock. I am trying to find out if it exists at all in the wild stock. JB that is the type of dedicated people I need. If the stock is not pure it taints the results.- Ants
Their is a good product used for swimming pool filtering processes you can use. It is a powder but I am not sure of the name by which they sell it under. I only know what it consists of. It is Diatomaceous Earth or sometimes referred to a Celite and is great for killing insects as they have an exoskeleton. It will not harm the birds. However it is indiscriminate and will kill beneficial insects. - Figure This One Out Peoples
