Surrogate Father
I don't do this. I fine my chicks are fine by themselves. I do keep an eye on them and if the seem to suffer, i put them back with the parents for a week

Surrogate Father
This is correct but I agree with Kaz. The chciks should be able to eat susccessfully before puting them in the Kindy cage. I leave my chicks with the parents till they are at least 6 to 7 weeks old and i see them eating well.

The setup is improving Kaz. Black Wolf self inflating bed and pillow and a 0 deg Black Wolf Sleeping bag and i was so comforable and warm. I had a MSR Dragonfly burner so lunch was hot dogs, Dinner was a steak burger and breakfast was sausages and eggs. Coffee was fine. 3 Stubbies and 2 can of soft drink.. I really didn't need for much. Tent handled the wind fine. I have a rally at Cooyar in two weeks time so looking forward to geting out there. I learnt a few things over the weekend so will be better prepared for that rally.

Heat is the first thing to do untill you get to see a vet. My Hospital cage is set to 34deg C. As the birds starts to recover, slowly reduce it to the temp in the flights.

Eggs

Want To Breed My Budgies
Hi Sangee Welcome to the forum. We usually take the chicks out to check them everyday from day 1. This is only for a few moments to check if the chicks are okay. After about two to three weeks you can take them out for a few minutes. Constant handling, if only for a few moments buit regular shouyld help them settle down. You will over time notice that each one will develop a personality. some will bond more than others. Doing this will not cause the parents a lot of stress.

Little Help
A good cock can service 3 or 4 hens at the same time. Place 4 hens in separate cages. In the morning place the cock in cage one. After lunch cage 2 next morning cage 3 and that afternoon cage 4. Next morning restart. All going well, (nothing evergoes totally to plan) you will have four clutches from the same cock. But remember to keep the cock fit.

Wire Cages Versus Wooden Or Plastic Coated Wooden
Melamine cages here too. I find them easier to clean. Radio set to MMM Brisbane. Helps the breeder with his cleaning as well.

Urgent
Clean the legs and give the chicks a rub of Medicated Olive oil. If you haven't got any mix a few drops of Detol into some baby oil and rub it lightly over them. The hen won't like the taste and the detol and oil will sooth the chick. The hen will pluck the chicks for many reasons. Some are not intending to hurt the chick. Some say she does it because she is either playful or board.

Supplements
I use Marshall's products and the birds seem to benifit from them.

Max Number Of Budgies In Aviary
The rule of thumb is give each bird 150mm of perch space. so if you have a 1 meter long perch, thats 7 birds. But i would have the perches across the cage so the birds can fly length wise.

The Cock Has Kicked The Hen!
The cock takes over feeding the chicks arounf 3 to 4 weeks of age. I have never had a Cock kick the hen out but i have had a hen kill the cock when he's tried to get in and feed.

Saw Dust is a common term used in Australia for Wood Shavings. There is no harm to the birds using Wood Shavings from untreated pine wood. It is advisable not to use Wood Shavings from treated timbers.
