The current Show Bird is far removed from the native budgerigar. It is larger with a higher density of feather. With the changes to the anatiomy, also comes changes in physical capabilities. These birds are not really capible of any type of great flight. The young depend on good food with high levels of protien. They need to stay longer in the nest and are slow to wean. The adults go through deeper moults and more often. During which times they need high levels of vitamins, minerals and protein. They also take longer to sexually mature, some times up to 2 years in some cases. Some of the larger buffier feathered birds are incapable of breeding with out human assistance. These are some of the challenges that we face trying to breed and look after show birds...... .......and I love it

If you need some plans let me know. I do need some general dimensions and a bit of a discription. Here is the plans for a dual carry cage for Heathrow. >DUAL CARRY CAGE<

Henry George tried it but it didn't work. Not say don't only saying it didn't work for him. I tried it but lost the family through illness so it didn't work for me.

click on my signature photo and go to management. you can download the plans from there. Hi Heath Sorry here is the back. I thought I got some shots but didn't. The ventilation holes are actually two sheets of ply. I used the 3mm White Plastic Ply Wood on the inside but used a 6mm ply on the outside. I drilled and cut the holes on both sheets while temporary clamped together. I then used a 10mm rebating bit to cut a rebate in the 6mm. The mesh was then Silicone in to the 6mm and the sheet glued together like a veneerer. Doing a dual cage side by side would be easy. Would you like me to do the plans? Yes daz - that would be great. The reason for me building a smaller version of your cage, is im not sure if a 4 compartment cage would fit into our car with my tribe of kids. 2 compartment is better suited to the use it would receive at my place. Thanks Daz Sure I'll do them up in the morning
  6. Tiling sounds good. Got to wait till I have a chance.. Dave yours is looking good..

You can breed any bird together. The risk of breeding very close is that you double up on features, Even recessive ones. If the features are a fault, then you double up on it. I know breeders that have tried brother and sister. I have done it. But it didn't work for them and it didn't work for me. I pair as close as Half Brother to Half sister, cousins, Grand father to Grand daughter. But you have to know your birds and what faults they have.

End Result okay now you know, what's stoping you
  12. Who said Recessives and DECs are small birds???? I have recessives the size of my normals and dominants. I am trying to get the DECs up to that size as well but pairing back to large Normal/Recessive Pieds. Not like those Clearwings(sparrows). He, he, well they are small over her in the West! I look forward to seeing your monster DEC's at Nationals anytime soon! I'll have to wait till they allow DECs in the nationals... I must be part german as I like power in my birds, even the recessive varieties. Grey Greens increase size. Grey green to grey green will give you a 25% DF Grey Green. They look as exactly the same as a grey green but will breed 100% grey green.

Liv, Point out that the perches are wrong in that Photo, they should run front to back.

Sounds good, does it become like a seed bell?
  15. Daz replied to **Liv**'s post in a topic in Show Standards
Liv I would have but got rid of a couple I have a year or two back. You are right it's the secondaries turning up at the ends.
  16. Interesting... As a rule any two recessive varieties put togeather can reduce size. Sky to Sky can reduce size. So to increase size go Green/blue to Sky. Who said Recessives and DECs are small birds???? I have recessives the size of my normals and dominants. I am trying to get the DECs up to that size as well but pairing back to large Normal/Recessive Pieds. Not like those Clearwings(sparrows). I'd only use recessives to Spangle to improive the Recessives, and have. Spangle to Spangle, Spangle to DF Spangle or Spangle to a normal that has come from a spangle pairing is a good way to improve the wing markings. (yes you can get a lot of DF Spanlges, but whats wrong with that?) I wouldn't use Cinnamons to improve colour. I use them to try to get the suffusion out of the DF Spangles. Plus they are a good variety in themselves. Violets/lutino to lutino mating is a good way to improve the Lutino's colour.

    Front to back is best.

:fear um yep dats da one High in iron. Try working out how much they actually get? Most of the soft food is Budgie starter, Hulled oats and calcivet. The vegie mix is a small amount. 8 Tablespoon.
  19. Daz replied to Nathan.'s post in a topic in Food And Nutrition
My Soft Food Recipe... Don't tell any one, it's a secret. Veggie Mix: 1 carrot 1 medium size beetroot 1 bunch curly paisley two handfuls of Baby Spinach leaves. Place in a blender with a table spoon of Pentivite and a 1/2 tablespoon of probotics (type with garlic is the best). Blend until chunky not smooth. You might have to do it in batches and then mix together. Put into an air tight container and place in the fridge. (should be about a litre of mix) When ready to use: 1 Tablespoon. Whole Egg Powder 1 Tablespoon of Finch soft food. (Paswell I think) it's 30% protein. 8 tablespoons of Veggie mix. 10ml Calcivite 1 cup hulled oats 2/3 cup of Budgie starter. (Might need more if the veggie mix is very wet) This makes up about a litre of soft food. I give a table spoon per breeding cabinet two tablespoons per four chicks in the nappy cage. What's left over is divided to the flights. Feed this in the morning and night.
  20. 19 out of 20 I'm happy
  21. Daz replied to Lewis's post in a topic in Cage Discussion
Very Good. I like the casters on the bottom. I'd add a front rail to each cabinet. Allow 15mm gap for a tray. The rail should be between 20mm - 25mm and can be used to position the cage front.

  24. Cocks will be Split Recessive and Lutino and the hens will be Split Recessive. If the cock is Dark Green then the offspring will be 50% Light Green (assuming that the lutino is not carrying dark factors) 50% dark Green. If the cock is Olive then the offspring will be 25% light green 50% dark green and 25% olive.

I am sorry but If the bird was born on the 1st April it is only 21 days old and will need constant hand feeding every 4 hours.
