  1. I'm going to a club lunch today and the bloke has said he's happy to give me a few of his culls. Of course initially they won't be in the aviary but eventually they will and I don't want to overdo it because I'm pretty close to my limit already I suspect. Dimensions are 3 metres long X 2.5metres wide X 1.8-2metres high(pitched roof) I have plenty of perches, etc of course and of course no nest boxes. Anyone want to give me an idea of how many would be happy cos I'm no good at working it out
  2. okay well in that case I'm going to hazard a guess that she's probably a bunch of different mutations all mixed up. Maybe opaline, ino and cinnamon, try and have a look under her feathers and see if she has abnormally dark skin in that area it may be excess melanin from skin pigmentation. The reason I say cinnamon and ino is that is essentially your 'lacewing' combo and can appear in other patterns the main thing is the ino cinny combo which causes the cinny markings to show through. I would guess it's also carrying opaline and maybe dom pied or clearflight pied too. If there is excess skin colouring that may explain that touch of colour. WHen their chicks hatch you should be able to tell which dom genes she is masking since you've paired her to an R pied (good choice in this case). Next I would pair her to an ino to work out if she is a lacewing
  3. Mine do too Pearce but she's the only one that hangs from the roof
  4. Can the breeder she cae from tell you her parentage?
  5. Lutinos do get iris rings unless maybe they were masking recessive pied.
  6. My son has a hen who sleeps in her cage like this every night, I snapped her the other night while she was gettingready for bed :budgiedance: Anyone else have birds that sleep in crazy spots...
  7. Well I can see faults in her but she's definately a great start, she has nice blow which is often hard to get in a hen. Personally I feel she's too loose in the feathers and also a little long in the feather but these are things I can work on when I pair her in the future. She's only 4 months old and still developing and it will be interesting to see if she develops a bitmore shoulder as she grows.
  8. She was the first show type I ever bred so even if she was awful I'd still be proud of her Sadly her dad died when she was about two weeks old so she and her sister are the only ones I have to show for him, he was one of my favorite birds and by far the best show type I had at the time :hap:
  9. I might be able to raise a couple of hundred AV, do you think that might be enough between us
  10. Finally the cord arrived and the pics are here She's about 4 months old now She didn't go to the show today as I am going away tomorrow and decided I really couldn't take the whole day out from my prep to take her... For anyone wondering she isn't in a standard size budgie show cage, it's a smaller one which is actually a canary show cage so she isn't some kind of huge monster budgie For some reason though despite being for smaller birds the bar width is wider which is crazy if you ask me so don't try and judge her size based on the cage :hap:
  11. Has it always been that colour and do you have a picture of the whole bird?
  12. Just found out that one of my uni lecturers died in the fires The worst part is I'm not sure which one, by the description on the news it could only be one of a couple but I'm waiting for more news. Either way these are people I've known for about 6 years, so they are friends really not just acquaintances
  13. The stuff on the disk might be salvagable, let them know you have important info/work on there and that you would like as much as possible either given to you on CD or let them know you can supply an external hard drive to transfer it on to.
  14. I presume this is a pet store? Personally I would remove the small para about Perhaps you have a string of bird lovers.... and instead talk about your personal skills. You don'tneed to have a strong retail background, good catchwords are honest, dependable, mature, responsible, fast learner, etc. Also there is nothing wrong with mebtioning things you may have been involved in through school or your extra curricular activities such as whether you've been captain of a sports team or in your school SRC. Also mention computer literacy as many cash registers are computer based now
  15. More info on her and how long has t been since her last clutch? Generally they do it when they feel theyare not ready to breed or conditions aren't right. A good rest is the best remedy. If she has already been rested then try giving her some pebbles to sit on when she lays the next egg as she shouldn't be able to pick them up to chuck them and it may break the habit
  16. No worries, I hope you didn't feel I was getting stuck into you. I wasn't so much worried about the pups as the expense you might get that's all, although you might get off with a warning if your vet gave you poor advice as he should know better...
  17. Please don't get me wrong Jenene, I ain't having a go at all and I know you would NEVER sell them unless you felt they were ready But do be careful still as despite what your vet said you can still be fined just under $3000 for selling pups under the age specified in the code of practice, regardless of what your vet says it's the law and applies to all people breeding animals, might be worth mentioning it to your vet next time you see him as he may simply not be aware. I have worked in the NSW and Vic pet industries as well as in the vic DSE/DPI and they DO check up on people and after all the expenses you had pulling Bella through the last thing you need s a fine. Many people, including vets, get confused between 'standards' and 'guidelines' and treat the age thing as a 'guideline' (which means it isn't prosecutable under law) but the age is actually a 'standard' which means they can prosecute for it. I new this was how it worked in Vic and I had thought the same for NSW but then found something on another forum which said six weeks (hence my earlier confusion) but the code of practice is very clear.
  18. Oh... Um in Vic it's illegal to sell them before 8 weeks, I figured it was the same everywhere... Apparently not the same everywhere In NSW they must legally be 6 weeks from a private seller and pet shops are not allowed to sell or accept pups until 8 weeks, for private sellers who are registered breeders their code of ethics states that for proper social development, etc they should be atleast 8 weeks. Apparently in WA (not positive though) the rule is also 8 weeks. Interesting there is such a difference between states... Sorry, changing it again... Just found the Draft Code of Practic from the NSW DPI for the Breeding of Cats and Dogs Here: http://www.dogsnsw.org.au/upload/documents...0and%20Cats.pdf
  19. Only four left what happened to the rest
  20. okay, after all my racing around organising stuff for my local fire relief centre tonight the light is still on in the aviary so I'll bring her in before bed and take a few pics for you, be patient a few minutes more Sorry guys, brought her in, took photos but now I can't find the camera cable as I'm in the middle of a reorganisation of the house will put them up ASAP for you. Kaz I assume the hacksaw blade is fine as long as the pins have had the blood flow recede from them ?
  21. Our local relief centre (we are only about ten minutes from one of them) requested toiletries (especially new toothbrushes and hairbrushes, sunscreen, after shave, shaving cream, perfumes etc to make people feel better), nappies and also animal cages as many people jumped in their cars with a cat under their arm or a bird in a cardboard box and need to house it while at the relief centre. I took 8 spare cages which would suit small dogs, cats or even birds down this arvo and they were so pleased as many of the animal rescues are overflowing and there is no where left for people to house their animals other than in their cars. I also purchased about 50 toothbrushes, five large tubes of toothpaste, a large tub of sunscreen and some cheap packsof combs, we also asked around the street and gots lots of the hotel tubes of shampoo, mini soaps, etc and took them in. Yes I could have just given them that money that I spent on toiletries but they were actually really pleased that I filled a need as it meant they didn't have to send anyone to buy those essentials. Our local centre has asked for no more clothes to be taken in, as when you think about it there are about 5000 people directly affected by this and many tens of thousands of people all trying to donate clothing so they are absolutely overflowing with clothing donations when what they really need are consumables like food, toiletries, etc.
  22. The radio is currently reporting that of those dead 145 were killed in the Kinglake-Whittlesea fires. So many people in such a small area, there will be almost no one touched in some way by the toll, whether it be a friend of a friend or a close relative Two small fires have now started near the ski lodge that my parents and I have shares in at Mt Baw Baw, so far it's being controlled but it's only about 10km away near the town of Tanil Bren (please keep safe everyone there) and we've been warned that a bit of wind in the wrong direction and it could go racing up the hill and they won't be protecting property as it's ust not accessible enough...
  23. If they are too big you could always put some in a snaplock bag between a couple of teatowels and give them a bash with something to break them up smaller
  24. I'm a Minolta chick, my old SLR was a minolta and I loved it, so easy to use. The DSLR I've just bid on is a couple of years old but hardly used, a Minolta too
  25. Sigh.... I miss my SLR. It was auto but it wasn't digital but I took some great shots with it, my beloved son stuck his fingers in the shutter and it's never worked since Since all the lenses are DSLR compatible as they are all auto lenses I'm hoping that when I do have to money to buy a new one I can get a box that will fit my accesories as I have quite a few really good lenses that I'd like to keep (a telephoto and a bunch of smaller ones plus filters, etc) OMG JB, your snap happiness ust rubbed off on me, I just bid on on one ebay which should fit my lenses . Hmmm.... now how to tell hubby
