  1. The main one I have learnt recently is to avoid spinach as it can interfere with calcium absorption
  2. Steer clear of the mirror but little bells and things to play with.
  3. I hadn't noticed that dark red! There are a few diseases in poultry that can present a little like that, sort of a red rash on the belly. I think you should definately get her looked at tomorrow, I know you are worried about the chick but given the vet is so close I think you need to decide whether you are more willing to risk the chick or the hen. If you lose the hen you may lose the lot of course...
  4. Not sure where to buy them, you used to be able to get them on those home shopping sort of sites, try searching for electronic mouse/insect deterent on google. I've never looked but you may even be able to get them from Bunnings, etc. I am near Greensborough. I am looking for birds but I am being given some on the weekend and as I don't yet know how many, etc. I need to hold off for the moment until I know how full my aviarys will be. Some will be moved on once I know which I am keeping but I'll just have to see.
  5. He may be frustrated, we had a galah with a deformed foot and he had trouble getting around so he used to bite his problem leg. It took lots of distraction to get him happy and once he was happy he stopped biting us too. Try putting lots of toys, etc within reach so that he has something to keep him interested.
  6. Get her checked ASAP, if it is peritonitis or an abscess she may be developing an infection in the deeper tissues which has broken through to just under the skin.
  7. I might try this recipe too, thinking I'll crush the eggs shells first and then put the whole lot in the blender so it's nice and fine
  8. ust touch it very gently and see if you can tell whether it's fluid filled or hard, it should be easy to tell.
  9. The coelom is essentially the body fluid surrounding the internal organs, there is a layer of muscle/fat over the top of it so you wouldn't expect to see it as a singular mas under the skin like that.
  10. Think of him like a small puppy or human child, he needs plenty of time out for rest and growth. Many birds sleep on one leg, this is normal.
  11. Having recently studied animal anatomy as part of my final year of a uni degree I'm gonna stick my neck out and say it doesn't actually sound like the same thing to me. The description essentially says that the infected matter is internal (in amongst the abdominal tissues) as a diffused series of smaller masses, not just under the skin as a big bump. Hopefully this is not what she has but she still needs to be seen by a vet soon.
  12. I'm prettyb sure the ink is non-toxic. After all with the amount that comes off on your hands just reading one they'd never get away with using toxic ink. I always keep an eye out for butchers paper (like blank newspaper or the stuff the wrap fish and chips in), sometimes people give it away.
  13. Bea the same guy also has one with multiple budgies on it, check his other items.
  14. Fine then...burst my bubble :sulks:
  15. My lorikeet thinks it's great fun when I put new paper in her cage, she spends the next hour destroying and then looks very satisfied! I think it' only a bad habit if you don't like him doing it, I can see how much fun my girl is having so I let her go for it!
  16. That would be your best bet, far less risky. In reality they'll probably be fine for that amount of time without a hot water bottle as long as they are somewhere fairly warm, but the hot water bottle won't hurt. Just make sure it's not too hot - you don't want dehydrated babies.
  17. How long is it going to take you to go to the vet? If it's not long a warm hot water bottle(not too hot) placed under the nest should last long enough.
  18. What about trying one of those plug in mouse deterent things. I've heard contradicting reports about thei effectiveness but it might be worth a try..

  20. Soup mix is the soaked legumes I refer to in my last post. It's just the dried split peas, barley, etc that you add to soups.
  21. When raising day old chicks we use a desk lamp with a low wattage bulb, you need to make sure it doesn't dry out in there too much or get too hot. If you are going to do it then you would want to do a test with an empty box to work out where to place the light and you might want to try putting a damp facewasher in one corner to help with the humidity.
  22. Is he a supportive hubby Neat? Once the last eggs are hatched would he look after the chicks while you get her sorted.
  23. Some birds are just more prone to them probably, just like humans I would still get it checked by the vet once she is able to be moved but for the moment I would assume that it is innocent until proven guilty...if only to make yourself feel better for the moment
