A Bit Of A Laugh
Hi there, it's not exactly a joke, but it is funny. If anyone is interested in checking out a song it's JOHN WILLIAMSON - The Budgie Song. I didn't know how to put the actual song on the forum so I'm just letting anyone know about it if they're interested. I found it on itunes, but I'm pretty sure you can download it if you look for it. I thought it was cute and it did bring a smile to my face. Enjoy

When Is Skinny Too Skinny?
Hi, I have a hen who's been in quarantine now for 6 weeks. The reason I haven't ended her quarantine yet is because I'm concerned that she's not putting weight on. Though she is skinny she doesn't have any other symptons apart from her small weight. She's eating well but won't try vegies. Her poops are normal looking. She's not lethargic. She's bright and attentive and very vocal. Too me she doesn't appear ill. It's only when I feel her breast bone that I think she is skinny. But I'm no expert and I'm not at all sure about how much you should be able to feel the bone there. For all I know it could be normal. She was wormed about 3 weeks ago when I first noticed her weight. I'm unsure if I should put her with the other birds or have her checked by a vet. Is it possible that she is a bird that doesn't carry alot of weight or could there be something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Teaching My Baby To Talk
Hi there, it just takes lots of patience. My inside bird Oliver is now 14 months old and he has just started saying 'naughty boy', as unfortunately that's what I said to him all the time when I greeted him. It wasn't intentional but now I've started teaching him 'pretty boy' and every now and then he says that too. I find he listens really well if I'm sitting next to him and just costantly repeat the words in a sort of high pitched voice. He chatters constantly back to me. Hopefully I can get him to say even more. He seems to know that I think he's clever when he says them. Good luck with your little friend.

Quickie Question About Genetics!
At the time of producing Oliver I only had the 2 budgies. Oliver's 2 sisters are from the second clutch of same parents. They are not colony bred from my point of view and they definitely have the same parents. I have no knowledge of his parents lineage as they were pet shop buys. From the same place, 3 years apart. This place has a large supply of budgies and I don't know where they get their birds from or if they breed them. And Oliver's mother is opaline, so does that means he is split for that as well? Tis' very confusing this genetics business, but oh so interesting. Thanks Derricka

Quickie Question About Genetics!
Hi, thanks for your replies. Geez if he actually turns out to be split with all these mutations thats one heck of a mix. What about the opaline? Can he be split for that also or do both parents have to be opaline? Thanks Derricka

Quickie Question About Genetics!
Hi, I have Oliver who is a YFII skyblue spangle. His parents are yellow/green greywing cock and YFII skyblue opaline spangle hen. Along with Oliver they also produced a Creamino hen and YFII skyblue cinnamon spangle recessive pied hen. Now my question is what does that make Oliver split for? I want to breed him eventually and would like to know his full story. I'm not sure if he is greywing (his wings don't show grey they are quite white) so does this mean he is split for greywing. His father was split for blue if he produced blue birds is that right? And also from what I understand the father was also split for cinnamon and ino as well because he produced these birds as these are sex linked (I think)? So where does the recessive pied come from? Is that from both parents or one and can Oliver be split for that to? Sorry to be a pain...but basically is he split for every mutation listed above or is it like a lucky dip for what he inherits? Thanks Derricka

Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy?f
Thanks for all the replies. I just don't know what's going on with this budgie. And It's such mixed thoughts about his/her gender. Anyway I've put him/her back in the aviary with the other birds. Maybe I'll catch him/her doing something natural (like laying an egg) that'll confirm his/her gender . For now I think I'll stop thinking about confirming it and it might just smack me in the face one day and then I can run back to my computer and tell you all. And just for general info this budgie is approx. 9-12 months of age.

Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy?f
Casper's cere definitely resembles your lacewing's cere. (very pretty bird by the way) Both birds do a lot a chatting, Oliver more so than Casper. They feed each other constantly. They do a lot of beak clicking and staring at each other. Oliver is more insistent, but on a few occasions Casper has done the chasing. Ollie has on a couple of occasions tried to put his foot up on Casper but has been firmly rejected by Casper moving away quickly or pecking at Ollie. They have been together for a couple of months now and their behaviour (to me any way) does not indicate a boy and girl relationship. I've only had the one breeding pair and unfortunately I missed 99% of their courtship ritual so sadly I'm still unsure of what to expect. Thanks Derricka

Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy?f
Thanks everyone...I thought boy also. From what I'm learning on here I thought to question my doubts especially when it comes to sexing budgies. Kaz, not yet breeding, just wanting to pair up and see who will bond with who. Still a few months to wait before that. Just that it's hard to judge whats what when I'm not an expert. But with my questions and doubts I'm learning what I need to know. If Casper's a boy then I won't leave him with Oliver to bond because like I said pretty pointless if I want nature to take its course. Since finding this forum I've become very aware of my responsibilities as a good bird owner and I try to stick by that. I love my birds and wouldn't risk breeding earlier than I should.

Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy?f
Hi there, I'm very confused about my albino Casper. This is the first photo I put up and the thought was boy. okay this is the second photo I put up when I thought Casper's cere had changed to a brownie colour and the general thought was girl. Now I'm in doubt again as Casper's cere is currently a dusky/pinky colour, not the brown that hens get. I would like to confirm that she is a SHE as I have paired her up with Oliver and it'll be a little pointless expecting nature to take its course if she happens to be a HE. They are getting along fine, lots of feeding each other and preening and beak clicking and intently staring at each other face to face. But other than that I have not seen anything that tells me they're interested in making babies. I know it's probably obvious to experts but I'm struggling especially when the budgies don't develop the ceres that are easy to identify and leaves me feeling like a big idiot. Any info appreciated thanks Derricka

Boy Or Girl?
When I first saw that photo I thought something was wrong also but she seems fine now. My daughter has her out and she flies great. I've put it down to she may have been a little stressed after I brought her home but I will keep an eye on it. Her wings are now tight against her body. I don't want to sound rude but why is there such a wide discrepancy with identifying her colour? The photos pretty much show her true colour. Please don't take offence as I only want to learn more than what I know now (which is not much). Thanks
-
Boy Or Girl?
Thanks for your replies. Her colouring is the softest pastel purple, if I had to align her to either grey or blue I would say the colour would be more related to grey. I don't know what this means or anything but she's just pretty to me. I thought mauve when I first bought her but the colours/mutations confuse me so I wasn't confident in guessing colour. Thanks

Boy Or Girl?
Hi there, this is my new budgie SHYA and I am just wanting to know if she is a girl or not? When I bought her I thought so but now I'm not so sure! I think she is a cinnamon opaline? but I'm unsure about her colour as she is pale purple...very pretty in my opinion that's what made me buy her . Also how old would she be? Thanks heaps Derricka

New Boy...what Is He?
Hi there, just wanted to show you a new budgie I just bought. Could someone confirm what he is...I'm guessing he's a double factor spangle, but I don't know much. I just read through the mutation guides but it has left me a bit confused. Also how old do you think he is as I'm still relying on being able to age babies by their bars and when they don't have any well... :sadsorry: . He also has iris rings, so possibly 3-6 months... ? He also has pale blue on his cheeks and through the front of his body. Thanks We've named him Heath and this opaline boy we're calling Ledger. You'll have to excuse the names but he was my favourite actor and I was so completely devestated when he died. But the boys suit their names well. Thanks

Dom Pied Or Not?
Hi there, just a quick question...is this budgie dom pied? I can see the beginning of her iris rings, but not too sure about her markings. I know she is spangle but want to get her mutation right as I write all the birds down so I can keep track of them when I breed. Thanks

Iris Rings In Dom Pieds
Hey Kaz, when I first posted his picture it was a bit of a toss up in the decision of dom or rec...I don't know any difference, so hence the clarification of him now. Also am not too knowledgeable of the iris ring subject so that's why my question is asked. Either way I don't care what he is I think he's gorgeous no matter what! :laughter: And I'm always up to learning something new...thanks.

Iris Rings In Dom Pieds
Hi, picture of Elmo's iris ring below. It can only be seen in the bright morning light. Otherwise his eye looks completely black. I've had him now for approximately 4 months and he was between 3-6 months when I got him. I just want to confirm he is dom pied...or not! I'm sorry for the photo he was very idignant about being manhandled. Thanks

Iris Rings In Dom Pieds
Hi there, just a quick question...Are the iris rings in dom pieds always prominent as what I've seen in other birds? Elmo was thought to be dom pied but I was told the truth would be seen if he developed iris rings. Well, this moring under the bright morning sun I noticed he had iris rings, but when viewed normally you actually can't see them at all. Does this mean he is dom pied or do the rings have to show normally and be seen at all times for him to be so? I think it was Neville that mentioned all birds have iris rings but just depends whether they're seen or not. I thought that if the iris rings are not visable all the time whether this would make a difference in his mutation. Thanks
