  1. thanks for all the helpful advice. i am glad it is normal. i was thinking i had done something wrong with her. i have put her in the aviary because she will be use for breeding not as a pet bed but because i go into the aviary twice a day to spend time with the birds when she first went in she was still coming to me and sitting on my shoulder and talking to me and then in the last week she has change which sounds like normal for her age. Runt is happy now and adores listen to Tweety talking to him. Tweety says hello to Runt and calls him a pretty boy but does not talk to me.
  2. violet is my handraised baby that is 3 months old and i noticed that when i weaned her onto seed she started fighting with her brothers and sister but was still placid with me and loved sitting on my shoulder.because i was selling two of the babies and i wanting them to get use to being seperate before i sold them i move violet and runt into a cage with a 18month old male hoping that he might settle violet down. she was only in the cage for a week when i noticed tweety my older bird had stopped talking and would not come near me and runt was looking depressed. she had also started to bit me so i moved her into the aviary and now tweey is talking again and follows runt everywhere when they are out of the cage but is afraid of me. do you think he blames me for putting violet with him? violet is getting along with the birds in the aviary but is bacoming more aggressive with me and the kids. when i go into the aviary she will fly to me and sit on my shoulder but starts chirpy angrily at me and biting my ear and neck. it is so hard to act like she is not hurting so i take her off my shoulder and put her on a perch but she keeps coming back and landing on my hand or arm and biting me very hard. if the kids come in she will swoop at them. when i am filling their water and food bowls she will land on my hands and bite me.what would make a hand raised baby change so much and what can i do to help her. i miss the placid beautiful little girl that i raised.

my kids name my birds so that very simple names. Jack-we got given him and that was his name Jill- she was orginally called Pet after my daughter Petra but Jack took a fancy to her so my kids changed her name to Jill Henry- my son choose his name Romeo- as soon as i bought him home he started chasing the girls Tweety and Sly [slyvester]- are brother and sister and my kids like looney tunes Violet or Violent- depends upon what mood she is in during the day to what we call her. Runt- he was the smallest in the 4 babies i hand raised and we nearly lost him. Boris- husband pick his name Benny and Billie- brother and sister so the kids wanted B1 and B2 but i got them to pick two names starting with b

thanks, so if i wanted to breed recessive pieds i would have to breed boris with another recessive pied.

if i paired boris and billie together what would be the likely outcomes

i just purchased three new budgies, i went to look at one and bought home three. Boris is my first recessive pied which i went to purchase but i could not resist the grey brother and sister and they came home with me as well.Benny and Billie's father was a blue dominant pied and the mother was a albino so what would there colours be and where does the grey come from? Boris Billie Benny
  10. hi, just wanting to ask another question about the pieds. i have heard you mention split recessive but can you get split dominant pieds because if you had a normal that had one parent a dominant pied if you breed it with a dominant pied would the offspring be pieds or all normals or is it only the recessives that can be split. i hope this makes sense.
  11. thanks kaz for helping me understand more about the pieds. i am wanting to use jack for breeding and now i will try to breed him with a recessive pied and see what the account is.
  12. after your reply harlequinlover, i read some info about split recessives and then saw kaz's article about the pied spot and now i am wondering if a budgie i have that i thought was a normal with a funny white patch on his head could be a split recessive. i also have a blue spangle with a mottled coloured back, could he have recessive genes or is that common in spangles. Jack with the spot on his head Romeo from the front- nice sky blue Romeo from the back.
  13. that is a good idea. i will see if i can get a pair of recessive pieds.
  14. thanks kaz, that is helpful. i am going on the weekend to look at some baby pieds a guy has for sale and i wanted to understand more about them before a go. i think they are beautiful looking birds and would love to breed some.
  15. thank you, i looked at the pics but i think it will take me a while to work out which is dominant and recessive. i had no even heard of a pied till i joined your site a couple of months ago but it has been great to learn more about budgies.
  16. i am wanted to get some pied budgies for breeding but i have only ever had normals and spangles so i have been reading about the pieds on the forum. what are the main differences between the dominant and recessive pieds so when i buy a baby pied i would know how to tell if it is a dominant or recessive.

hi, i just finished hand raising 4 babies and i went to the pet shop and bought Avione hand rearing formula. you make it up according to the directions on the packet. my babies are 6 weeks now and weaned onto seed and they all survive on the formula.

thanks kaz, i really love the colour of violet and i am fairly sure she is a female so i am plannning to keep her to breed with and i am keeping my eye out for a male to buy to pair her with when she is older.

here are photos of my babies that i started hand raising 4 weeks ago.they are fully weaned now and learning to fly. As you can see from the photos they have taken over the lounge and my 12 month old budgie has accepted them come into his territory.i seem to have a assortment of colours in the babies and i was wondering with the two different shades of blue are two a sky blue and one a cobalt. The darker blue one is darker than what the photo shows. this was my first attempt at hand raising and with the help of the information i found on your forums i managed for them all to survive and be happy little budgies. thanks for a great community you have going. Violet and Tweety (the 12month old) Scruffy looking Violet- her back is darker than her chest The group on the lounge watching Telly Runt, who nearly died, is strong and healthy Rita 6 week B'day and all are beautiful Hayworth and Violet Hayworth loves any shoulder

the babies i have i am hand raising,so would it still be best to wait till they are 42 days old before i sell them. i do not breed for show. i have been doing colony breeding but after reading your forums i am going to remove the nest boxes from my avairy because i did not realise that it could be stressful for the budgies.

i am sorry about the mum, she has been the best breeder i have ever owned. she was very protective of the babies and would bite me if i put my hand in the nesting box and the father was not allowed in the nesting box either. i am wondering if it is better to wait till i wean them before i sell them to my friend but the problem is that i am becoming quite attached to them myself that i am not sure if i can part with them. they are so cute and there colours are starting to develop.
  25. thank you for the information but what does type 2 mean. Next year sly will be old enough to breed with but if i breed her with romeo who she seems to be very fond of will get yellow face babies.
