  9. Very cool... but the poor birds would get mighty hot in those tin suspended aviaries in the hot Queensland sun .
  10. Yeah... JB is in Melbourne but hasn't started breeding yet, as far as I know
  11. Dave McMinn is in NSW MB I'll just add welcome and good luck. I tend to agree with MB about letting the parents raise them and just handle the bubs lots... but I'm not expert.
  12. How cute! They are the sweetest little things aren't they!
  13. Congratulations!!! Is it tiny??? lol My hen laid all her eggs right inside the door under the entry hole!!! Where is the 'door' on your nest box? I have the ones that the lid slides up. I found my Hen didn't like sitting in the concave as it was near where I opened the door. I simply got a small length of wood, not real thick, and stuck in down just inside the door. As soon as i did that, she was happy to stay where she should... maybe she thought the eggs would roll out when I opened the door???
  14. Hi Jen and welcome. I'm sorry it's under these circumstances. Breeding does have its downfalls. It is kind of like finding a needle in a hay stack at this point... but hopefully with some photo and more information... we can find some answers. Although it's hard to know... I'll give a few suggestions/ideas... * Make sure they have access to a fresh daily serving of veggies and hardboiled egg- all blended up small. It takes a lot to breed budgies and feed all of those hungry mouths... maybe they are going hungry and starving? Also... do you know if the parents have raised babies before? Some mothers just have no idea how to do it... maybe she doesn't know she has to feed them all!?!? * Even though you say the other pair doesn't go into the nest box, can you be 100% sure??? You could move the pair that are NOT breeding into another cage, just until Mum and Dad finishes raising the babies... NEVER move a breeding pair and their babies. (Just saw the photo of your cage... I personally wouldn't keep both pairs in there while one is breeding. The size is fine for four budgies.... but not while breeding. I'd try and do what I suggested above) Good luck and please let us know how you go... we'll try to help you and your babies out. maesie xo
  15. Wow... Good luck mate. I hope all is well in the morning with this new chick. I look forward to hearing a good update when I get home from work!
  16. Great news!!! I hope it doesn't take too long for them to settle... You have done the right thing to cover them. Have you got them fully covered??? If so, do that for awhile, them have three sides covered... then just the back... etc... and then uncovered. It can take days or weeks... it doesn't matter. They will feel safe with somewhere to hind. Good luck with them and keep us updated. I look forward to the photos when they calm down. Also remember to ask anything you like... we are all here to help and hope you and your 'new' friends will be happy.
  17. Yay! I'm glad I have someting right! I thought it better to outlay a bit extra on bigger cages in the beginning after reading the bonuses on here. I will fix it all tomorrow, can't expect to have it all right at once! Again wonderful advice on here as always! So very true!!! Good on you too for asking for advice and listening to it... we're here to help. I'm sure you will have great sucess in the near future with your birds... :bump:
  18. It's all good... :bump: Kaz's has her's upside down too... If you only just put them in the cage today, it's probably okay to try and change is asap... and it shouldn't interupt them too much... It's best to get it all right now before she starts laying. GREAT size cages though!!! Plenty of room...
  19. :bump: Good Stuff!!!
  20. maesie replied to Hills's topic in Cage Discussion
Sounds fine... Parallel ( :bump: ) bars would be fine Easy for them to climb up to.
  21. A new girlfriend... yes, but you'll have to quarantine for 30 days, so they won't be able to start breeding until beginning of December... Good luck with what ever you decide... maybe put him back with his 'old' girlfriend... maybe he just needed a spark up??? If not... go for the newbie
  22. maesie replied to Hills's topic in Cage Discussion
In my opinion... as long as the width AND length are the same... and the height isn't compromised in anyway due to the arches... it may be okay. I'd have to see it though... also, make sure there are no parts where the bars join and get closer as they can get their toes caught...
  23. Great cage... a couple of suggestions I can make: I'd remove the perches which are in there and replace with some natural branches going from front to back (either end of the cage, thick and thin. This is better for their feet, and giving them the ability to fly back and forth, gets the in the mood, so to speak! lol Also, can the cage front be removed, turned upside down, and re-attached? Budgies prefer high nest boxes. If you were able to do this, the small door where the next box is now, would be up the top, not down the bottom. I'm not sure how easily this can be done though. Also, have the perch which is down that end finish near the entry to the nest box to allow for easy access. Make sure they have plenty of soft food-veggies and hard boiled egg-mixed in. Access to calcium and/or add it to their water... Now... just wait... and GOOD LUCK!
  24. Oh... poor birds. I hope you get some answers and hopefully what ever is causing it, it can be fixed. Hugs mate and good luck
  25. Good point Neville... Breeding birds need plenty of calcium to produce good strong eggs.
