My New Boy.
Thanks for your kind words guys Getting back on topic.... I have now been to every bird/pet shop in the north of Adelaide. Even those dreaded ones that shall not be named - hehe. If you work in one of thoes shops you will have seen me there in the last few days (Laughing out loud) If you havent seen me then please let me know, becuase it means I have missed your shop - (Laughing out loud) I have down graded my expectations from the opaline YF with violet gene to just a YF blue female. I cant find any YF blue females ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!! Getting desperate! Is the YF Blue a sex linked mutation? The lady in my local shop mentioned something about the drought causing more Male Chicks???? What is going on????????

The Existing Aviary And Our New Year's Project
Hi Julie, I'm an Adaliaidian too I think we are few and far between on here (Laughing out loud). Love the size of your aviary. I would agree with Kaz that it must get hot in our weather. Dose that tree provide any shade? My birds are fully shaded (with our pergola) and they still sit on the ground panting in the hot weather... RAIN!!! PLEASE RAIN!!!!!! What a great idea to convert your shed!! good luck with that, cant wait to hear about your plans

Success So Here Are Some Of The Others.
Julie, They are lovely birds. Buttercup and Custard are very pretty. Olive looks gorgeous sitting shy on those rings. Looks like Mildred is a bit of a cheeky one - she has this "Who me? Noooooo that wasn't ME...." Look about her - (Laughing out loud)

My New Boy.
No its not my lucky day. While i was at the shop, some guy parked his massive ute about 6 inches away from my passenger side. I have two toddlers and all mums know how frustrating it is when someone parks too close! I kindly asked if he could move his ute over a bit so I could get my daughter in the car.... Wellll... all *** broke loose and he was "F*** this" and "you F*** that" :yelling: and called me some VERY nasty names at full voice in front of my kids and many bystanders in the car park. I was very upset and shaken after he finally drove off still screaming at me. I just hope Kama will do it's work today - (Laughing out loud) i think i need to go back to bed so i can start today all over again

Advise For First Breeding
Welcome! Congrats on your first egg!!! She is in perfect breeding age Typical petshop... a picture might help us answer your question on age. Males dont need to be over 12months like females but he still sounds quite young. He will have a lot to learn when the chicks hatch. First time parents often have intertile eggs, it takes some practice to get it right. I would say, leave them be. He will still be tame after breeding, especially if he isn't stressed

2 X Yellow Face
I also believe that chicks that have been attacked/pecked/plucked by their parents will then do the same to their own chicks when they mature and breed.

I Would Like To Breed Some Show Quality Birds

New Member And New Chicks...
Welcome to the forum!! Congrats on your baby chicks!!! I also have 2 breeding pairs of budgies (currenly resting after a busy season) And i also have 2 pairs of cockateils that are ALSO doing nothing! I have 2 males and 2 females. In 5 years have only produced 2 chicks. I have no idea who the parents of the chicks were as they all swaped mates and parenting duties; I have even seen the two males have a go at mating

?s Re Aviary Wire
Vinigar wash is the best thing to do to protect your birds from the zink. Its not hard to do... I put the white vinigar in a bucket. I used a brush and painted it on. let it sit for a few hours, then hosed it off - Its only the wire that needs washing, so its not a huge job This is the wire on my aviary Its 13mm x 13mm Its big enough that the birds can happly climb on, but small enough to not let an adult mouse though (a baby or a skinny mouse could proabbly get though... but they cant get out again when they have a full fat tummy )

My New Boy.
No she hasn't moulted yet!!! she is probably only 8-10 weeks old, and i really hope she is a SHE!!! as i do sometimes mess up sexing when they are young hehe. I will have a long wait ahead before i can breed with her... but It will be worth it to get a YF violet opaline okay Now i am really excited I think i will be lining up at the shop door at 9am tuesday morning to bringing her home!!!! I'll post pics of them in their Quarentine cage (i only have 1 ) on Tuesday Ummmm??? Will it be okay to put them in the same quarentine cage when they are from different shops?????

My New Boy.
Thanks, thats great to know... I dont remember seeing any yellow faced hens that were of decent size today. There is, however, a juvenile hen in my local store... she is a great size, she is a sky blue opaline, Not sure about the violet gene though, but she is VERY Pretty and has a very light YF... I would have to wait to breed with her though - i was really looking for a 12month old..... But then again, paitence is the key Will the YF get darker, lighter or stay the same if they were to breed???
-
My New Boy.
Thanks KAZ, How will i know if she caries the gene??? I did a bird shop crawl today.... i think i visited everyone in the north of Adelaide (about 5 in total ) I was looking for a yellowfaced opaline - found NOTHING.... Know where i can get one?????? Oh and how dark should the yellow face be???
-
My New Boy.
I went to the South Australian Bird Company today and fell in love with this gorgeous boy... These pictures don't do his beautiful colour justice - he is a spectacular deep violet!!!! Am I Right in thinking he is an opaline? He is not very impressed with his quarantine cage.... and I was just wondering if I have to keep him in it for a full 30 days, or can i put him with rest of my flock early if he is fit? Also, will i be able to get Opaline yellow faced violet chicks from him??? What hen will i need to get??? thanks, liv
