  1. Mac and nell after a hard day at Doggy Day Care
  2. Thanks for that, My Dad and I think that a slab fllor is going to be the best and we are looking at doing a covered drain to make it easier to clean. I found a group down here that do avaries and my mother is worried about how it will "look" I really don't care want what is best for the birds to tell you the truth! So this is what i have found wanted your opinions. Hexagonal Aviary Large: 1800W x 2400H (6' x 8') (Mum's fave I think it lacks protection to the elements Aviary with Bird Lock For the serious breeder. Lets you enter into a small compartment before entering into the main aviary. Stops you losing birds. Dimensions: 2770W x 1500D x 1800H (9' x 5' x 6') All Purpose Aviaries Comes galvanised or powder coated. Ideal aviary for the beginner. Dimensions: 1760W x 900D x 1800H (6' x 3' x 6') A beautiful garden deserves a beautiful aviary. The Royal Range of aviaries make D&L Classic stand out from all other aviary manufacturers, with its unique patented design. The attractive dome affect gives your birds the best al all times. Rain, breeze, sun and most importantly, shelter in the cooler periods. Royal Aviary Large: 2750W x 900D x 2500H (9' x 3' x 8'2") I like the last one cause I think that if I get any other birds as well as the Budgies then it will suit them all, also gives max protection however the lock out one does have that feature, then again someone told me just put a tarp inside over the door to stop them from flying out as I go in and out which I thought was a good idea.
  3. Hi, I need some help. I have decided (after having to turn down a bird that needed a new home and I know will be put down) that I want to put in an aviary. I have a corner of my garden which it would work well in, theory is that I want to be able to put a concrete (or something else down suggestions welcome) that will be easy to clean and then put the avairy on top. I did a rough measurements and I have about 270cm width from the fence to the wall of the garage and about 158cm depth (however depth is not so much an issue just have to move some bushes) This area is great as it will have the added protection of the fence on two sides and the garage on the other. I found this website and like some of these -> http://www.precisionsheds.com.au/images/aviaries/index.htm However I live in melbourne so need a local supplier. Any suggestions would be great, I thought about building it myself for oh about three seconds then decided to spend the money instead! The reason behind it is there are so many birds like my Mozzie that have been given up and can not be rehoused as breeders don't want them and pet owners don't want them. They would however work well in an aviary but the rescue groups around me tell me there is a lack of people willing to take on healthy birds that are not suitable for pets (due to taming issues) or breeding due to age. I have the room, the money and the the time so why not build an aviary and be able to help some of these birds so that they can live out their life happy healthy and without issues.
  4. (Laughing out loud) I am not sure I could do that. I think the best course of action is to stop her from laying them. Also I am pretty sure she is about a year old and flame is only about 5 months old so really don't want them thinking about this till they are at least 18 months. So it's operation no nest! I am however thinking out getting a proper outdoor avairy and taking in some more rescue birds which may later down the track help with the issue of what to do with them once they hatch!
  5. Yeah I think untill I know what I am going to do with them then it would be a no no to even think about them. The fake eggs sound like a good idea however I am worried that if I give her an area then Flame might decided to try, however I am sure at 8 years of Age Harley is shooting blanks so nothing will come of them unless Blue is two timing Mozzie.... oh the naughty naughty birds!
  6. okay I know that Mozzie and Blue have been getting really close in the past few months. I get that they are in love but hello Mozzie has now taken to emptying the seed trays to try and lay in them. I had to really re think how I have everything set up. went and bought new small shallow ones and lots of sticks, also made a bunch of stick and cups so that i can feed them then untill she gets over this phase but now i am worried what if she never gets over it? Part of me wants to say screw it and put a breeding box in the cage and let them have at it. My father use to breed budgies so not worried about what is involved but then there is the whole issue of having a more babies and then having to sell them... Options, thoughts idea?
  7. okay as Kaz said that bird needs to go to the vets. Also have you/your friend checked its body weight cause saying has "not lost any noticeable condition" worries me as one of my guys can lose about 1/4 of their weight and unless I pick them up and handle them I would be able to tell. How can it eat and drink like that? I would be taking it to the vets ASAP
  8. Thanks guys, next door has catnip for their cats so might see if I can get some off them and spray aroudn the base of the cage (it's off the floor so maybe that will help. Also do a complete claen tomorrow was planned anyway.
  9. Yeah going to head there tomorrow. I just feel so embarssed as I fainted at the sight of it and flame sat next to one and didn't care!
  10. okay I have an issue with Cockroaches. First off I have a phobia of them, I literally run screaming from the room when I see there and have in the past, pasted out because of them. So when I went to the cage today and was changing the feed over and found on in the feed dish I sort of froze, it took a lot of effort to throw the feed dish into the garden close the cage and then run screaming from the area! I went back to look and found two others and *hangs head in shame* passed out, which is where my sister found me. She and her boyfriend removed the two that where on/in the cage one sitting right next to flame who seemed un phased by this (shes got more guts then I do) Anyway and suggestions of how to get rid of them?
  11. My green girl mozzie is small, a lot smaller then the rest. But I think that is more bad feeding as a baby then gentics. I have seen some really small ones at pet stores but I don't think it is somthing that anyone has really tried to breed
  12. Yeah know all about that! She is very pretty, and now you can think of her as a resuce bird because from what you describe I would say that you have resuced her. Having a few girls who I have taken out of bad situations, she is bound to be a bit on the flighty side as she will be wild. However they all come around.
  13. Just thought you might like to know, she is fine, three stitches and they have to watch for air bubbles but has pulled through. I think the issue was that she put the branch on the side of the cage going into the cage if it has hung from the top then it would not have been an issue. I know that I will be hanging mine from the top from now on and also making sure they are removed when they are almost finished so that they don't get stipped back so far.
  14. A friend I met through work use to breed Budgies and we where talking. I showed her a picture of Harley and she wanted me to come around to see her girl and we are thinking of seeing if they get along and IF we could get some chicks out of the two (I really think Harley is shooting blanks by now but that's not the point) We walk into her apartment to hear all *** breaking lose, run to the cage and there is her little one impailed on an old branch. She had given her a new branch of leaves the other day and "chicky" had eaten all the leaves and attacked the branch and had left a sharp point on one. We figure she much have flown into the branch and it went into her chest. We took her and the branch to the vet who was going to try and remove it. I am so suprised that she was even still alive and there did not look to be much blood loss however she did look exhausted. I know that from now on I will be checking mine morning and night and also changing the way I hang them in the cage to stop this from happening.
  15. okay this is my set up With the capping on the end Without the capping on the end A few randoms of the guys playing the their cage
  16. Same with mine however after a 34oC day they will not touch whatever is left as they all dry out really quick
  17. Help with the sleeping - I had a friend who had a bird that had to wear a collar for some reason and could not sleep as he kept falling off his perch. What they did was get a small cage and put one perch as low as possible and cover the floor with this matting stuff up to just under the perch. At night the bird was transferred into this cage to sleep and brought out each morning. After about a week he got use to it. Use to freak them out as he sleeps on his back with his legs in the air and wings outstreched! so they would wake up and think he was dead. Now days he no longer has a collar but still sleeps in his "bed". He goes up to the cage when he thinks it's bed time and screams until someone lets him in and then throws himself onto his back and little legs get streched up and off he goes to the land of nod! You night want to try something like that, just letting you know that there is hope to sleep with a collar.
  18. That does make sense AngV .... if he's still doing the naughty & making baby bubs & feeding them & putting up with all that stuff. Then he is a young at heart budgie. Good for him ! He tries to make babies but I will not let him nope sorry no breeding box for my boys can't handle having young chicks... oh the work and the worry. I would love to breed from him but he might be shooting blanks now. Hmmm wonder if I can find a breeder that has a female that they would like to try him with. He really is a nice bird?????
  19. Yeah same with mine they just strip the branch and leave all the leaves on the bottom of the cage for me to clean out. True, sometimes my guys strip them in a few hours other times it will take them a few days and by then they are past the point of no return so they just ignore them and I feel like it is a waste.
  20. Harley is my oldest but now I think at 9 years of age he is in fact young, still a grumpy old men I think the younger ones keep him young if that makes sense!
  21. I have the biggest issue with getting new branches putting them in the cage and the next day they are all dried up and sad looking. At the pet shop today and saw them putting branches in an old coke bottle with water and then attaching this to the inside of the bird cage. What a great Idea. Came home and did this, outside of the false start where Blue worked out that you would pull the branches out of the bottle and attempting to fly with them I then made sure he could not do this. Never thought of doing this and such a great idea.
  22. Hey it's summer here in melbourne and I folded and brought them into the study as it's 9 degrees out side! It is suppose to be summer! They are all sitting down the bottom of the cage trying to catch the warm draft from the heating ducks in the floor :hap:
  23. GET OFF MY ***** BALL!
  24. I have a question. When I had two birds in a smaller cage having them inside was not an issue now I have four in a much larger cage there is an issue with mess and noise. So I built a solid cap on one end of the cage (covers one whole end and wraps around the sides of the cage) so that they would have shelter from the wind and I cover them at night as long as it is not going to be to hot. However I have had mixed messages from people. A few have said that they will freeze to death out there and others have said that it should be fine. They are on my back porch with is under cover and I push them up into the corner so that two sides of the cage are against the walls, one has the cap and the top and front is covered with a blanket. A friend has her with less shelter outside and they seem to be find and I think about some of the cages that I have seen that are suppose to go outside and think they should be fine but now worry. They do still come in for a while each week to have some out of the cage time in my office (which I then spent the next few hours getting poo off my walls). Is this okay? or should I be bringing them in at night?
  25. Huh, my guys get the milk from the coconuts and also the flesh and love it, never thought to keep the shell will have to do that and make some more, which reminds me it's time to change the toys around this weekend! Yeah!
