  1. I would think its a cock bird. His cere is all pink.
  2. I find the easyest way to quarantine new budgies is to put them into the breeding cage with the bird that to be there mate, some start breeding ,other may take a little while to start breeding.I have 4 breeding cages in the feed room, for this purpuse.
  3. I agree with Kaz,If that was the case, some of the young budgies, are out in the flights for 10 months, before being caught up to come in to be prepared for showing.I havent seen 1 get stressed yet, they may get a bit spooked for a day or to,but no problems,I think budgies are the easyest of birds,to settle in small cages.
  4. Iam not sure. But I have a feeling you can send some droping to Veta Farm & they will do tests for you.I think it is only a small fee. There a bird vet in Melbourne, that a lot of bird people send birds & dropings to for testing. But you have to buy the medication from him.
  5. I had 2 FM chicks 2yrs,I sent them to budgie heaven.Touch wood I hav`nt had any since.I guess it is hard, when you only have 1or2 budgies. My advice, you would`nt want to know.
  6. They do have plastic leg rings.......they are green and numbered....I didn't think birds with split rings were allowed in shows......worth persuing though No Paul,You are right you can`t show with a split ring,It was said with tongue in cheek,There was abird at the national that had a split ring or plastic,so the word is. It was DQ & I guess more will come of it.Ifit is true.
  7. Welcome 4 Bugs,Cod Liver Oil.Its a good addive, but needs to be used with care.I use it in the breeding boxes,to feed the chicks.I mix 10mls to 1 kilo of seed & leave it stand over night & feed the next day,If you put to much oil in the seed,it will turn sour. With just 5 budgies I would`nt feed it more then 2 times a week.It can make the budgies to fat.I myself would`nt feed it to my flighted bird for that reason.Others may say different.
  8. You have some good breeding stock there,Pair them the right way & with a bitter luck, should breed a show bird or 2.The leg ring not RW14 or KP1 by any chance,
  9. You could put a plastic split ring.A bird with aplastic ring went all the way to the Nat show, so I hear
  10. I like the grey opline.Good width of brow & size.Would like to see him on the perch in a show cage.

If it is young, say 1or2 months old it may be female. But it is lacking feather, markings.

    WELCOME.
  13. G`Day, The first Question. The size of the cage the 3 budgies in.Is it big anough to take the 4 budgies. If not is the cage with the 1 in it is it suitable for 2 budgies.
  14. If you can`t work the torch.I would just let nature take its coarse & they will be fertile or clear,I guess the candling of eggs is only for the show breeders, that are trying to breed from special birds & don`t want tobe wasting 18 to 20 days,When you can change over the cock bird after 10 days & try again,

I would say that your budgie is female if it is nibbling all the time. The males are more docile.I'm not sure how you can stop it from biting.I only handle my budgie with a judges stick.
  16. They might have a itch,{ I would put a third nest box in.As the saying goes.1 more nest box, then there are hens.
  17. I don`t think a budgie, will lack sleep. They can have a snooze, during the day if they need it.The lights in my avery, don't turn off till 10.oopm I haven't seen any problems, with the birds,
  18. I give up.I have gathered from this forum, that a few have VIOLET on the brain, whats the big deal about VIOLET,It only any good in clearwing & recessive, the pretty coloured birds. You wont see to many on the show bench.
  19. Which one, Macka ? Mine or Marlons ? That a good question Kaz.I was just replying to that last post with the photo of the recessive pie.& what you wrote,if its Marlonys I dought its a its a Australian Y/F as she in Canada. :feedbirds:
  20. Kaz there is a chance,he maybe a Australian Yellow Face type 2. or Golden face as some call them
  21. There is abreeder in my club, runs 1 cock to 3 hens.He has no trouble with fertilty. The cock is changed breeding boxes each night.
  22. eather one will do.I use pen type.A diff colour for each day. That way I just put amark on the egg & I know what day in the week it was layed.
  23. I was a little surprised, when I read that WA was struggling to get 3 clearwings for the team,I thought I read in a bird mag there were some good clearwings in WA. A big chance for someone to get some good pair together & breed some for next years National.
  24. I use a permanent water based soft point pen.You could break the egg with a pencil& it might wear off.

If you have another pair feeding young of about the same age. They might foster it,or you will have to hand feed it I would think.
