My 2011 Breeding Journal
LOL she is nice isn't she Kaz, should of seen her brother from the last nest, I think he would of been a cracker, boy he looked good. He was a light green pied. But he had the splayed leg I asked you about and I fixed it and then his hip went out, the hen just sits to tight, I had him fostered. anyway I had to put him down at 5 weeks because he couldn't even move. Sad, This little girl and the mauve hatched on the same day, I think it is because she has more feather but she is behind him in progress, she still has some down showing. I guess they are only 4 weeks and 1 day old now. But I am happy because both rounds only one chick survived and both were pieds.

Growing My Own Vegetables
The only thing I care about that I hope grows in the silverbeet because I don't really have a green thumb if that is they saying, lol normally everything I grow dies. lol But the silver beet is looking good. Plus I am not totally wasting the water from the sink now because I am watering my garden and I am sure the birds will thank me with lovely fresh veges. excess will come inside for us to eat. Today I sneaked 4 eggs out to the little kitchen so Greg wouldn't miss them when I sneak a few more tomorrow, lol I need 12 and he won't let me use 12 in one go so I figure if I sneak a few for a couple of days he will think I am using them in teh cooking and not on the birds lol, we have our chooks 5 in all.

Absco Online Aviaries
Yes we made ours, I don't like ready made ones the are all stuffed up, never deep enough, to open ( not enough tin on them) and far too expensive. If I was to buy an already made one I would buy a garden shed and cut out the front and put wire in it my self, plus they work out far cheaper too.

Growing My Own Vegetables
After the experience I have had lately of chicks dieing and not knowing what the problem was, I blamed everything. Even though we found out it was the seed. But I blamed the town water , the bought water, the bought vegetables everything. Even though I soaked the veges foe hours, they have hormones etc in them and god knows what else. I was even buying my silverbeet because I was out of it. So 2 weeks ago I bit the bullet and planted my own garden, which is good because the water from the kitchen area has some where useful to go now. punnets of corn and celery, haven't planet these yet, going to do it in minute lol carrots Rosemary lol, I believe the budgies like it anyway it smells nice. Silverbeet Broccoli Beetroot More carrot I even sowed budgie seed It is starting to take off lovely now. I know i have snail bait down but they are everywhere, they ate half my silverbeet.

My New Birdroom (start To Finish)
Took some more photos of my little kitchen, done a little more to it. Put a row of hooks up for cups etc, going to put another one on the right hand side when I find time This shows the window wall side, I have a little drainer on the sill there I put a shelf up for the hospital cage, notice The kettle and food processor, I even have tea bags out there. lol. I have a toaster and iron too which I both use, I won them at a show. I only use the iron when building for the melamine stripping.lol Under shelf storage Here I am boiling eggs for my soft food, lol I sneaked the eggs out and bought the saucepan at from the op shop. I have one of those portable barbeques, works a dream. My boiled water, I only give my birds boiled water only now. My storage area, not finished yet, looking into the baby aviary and the other part of the old birdroom I went to the tip a couple of weeks ago with Greg and I couldn't believe my luck, a lovely small square plastic green out door table and a chair, the chair is missing the cushion but I don't need it because it is very comfortable teh way it is. The guy at the tip was using it in the mornings, lol I had the pry it from him. lol. It was free and in great condition, our tip recylces thing s like these.

Help With Smugglers New Bird Room
Yes I used the shade cloth on the aviaries but found it that good. But better than nothing. I already have extra peak thing on my birdroom because it was leaking, so these plumbers came and put it up for me I was to scared to say no Greg can do it, shy little me, lol anyway they ripped me off big time time, cost $30. for the part and $40 for a couple minutes work. The only problem with my roof being a garden shed with no real supports in the roof, I wouldn't think I could climb up on it in the middle there because it just might cave in. So the problem wood be how to attach it enough, could do the side okay and reach in so far but it would have to be anchored well or the wind might just blow away my roof, lol.

That is a very interesting post Dan, thanks enjoyed reading it. I have changed my soft food diet right in the middle of breeding which i know is not good but no choice really. Seems I have been having so much trouble with soaked seed. I have decided and started and the birds just love it so all is good. My recipe is weetbix, eggs, 9 grain bread, carrots, beetroot, celery which are all food processed. And then I add 2 tablespoons of soy bean meal, finch food and budgie crumbles which are all mixed together in a small bin. I make up enough for a week and freeze it in small tubs. my breeding cages have a feeder jar of hulled oats so they are still getting their energy.

Help With Smugglers New Bird Room
I don't know what my room will get in the summer months but through this winter we just had it has been very comfortable in there never cold at all. I haven't had my temp thing long but in the mornings about 8 am I have notice it ready 12c. and out side can be almost freezing.

Help With Smugglers New Bird Room
If you have the height and ventilation they are not bad, The birds can take heat better than they can take the cold. My shed is completely insulated, it's lovely in the winter but I think it will be quite warm in the summer months. It was 20c in my shed this arvo but that was very comfortable in there. But it is hard to compare my birdroom with others because my door and wind both face west which is why it gets so hot, and that is why we are putting a veranda up to try and cut some of the afternoon sun out. We had no choice when facing it that way, it was either west or south and south is worse for the wind.
