  1. The egg because without the egg the chicken wouldn't have come about... Having said that i don't beleive that egg came from a "chicken" but the stage in evoloution before they became chickens Ah see, for me, i believe that they came in whatever order God decided that they needed to be here in. Who am I to question the almighty?
  2. Interesting results from Twitch and Kiwi's nest 4 young. Eldest - grey opaline dom pied 2nd eldest - green or grey green dom pied 3rd eldest - green or greygreen cinnamon winged dom pied youngest - green or greygreen dom pied To the grey from a green bird, then twitch must be split blue. Dumber and DF - 3 eggs of their own, plus a cec gearing hen of mine had layed an egg in the aviary and was attempting to sit on it, the the aviary floor. I popped it in this nestbox and we will see if there is any result. If we get a green bird, then we know it is not theirs. Dumb and Kestral have 2 young of theirs. One is going to be a spitting image of dad, and one is a white DF spangle. They also have a foster in their nest, a grey spangle. All three greys in Earl and Latte's nestbox are doing well. Fledging any day now. Of the new pairs, 2 of the 3 hens are spending more and more time in the nestbox. Here's hoping for a good result. On the weekend some new pairs will go down. I am thinking 1) Bruticus - a Cec Gearing bred grey + albino hen 2) Green cock and Greygreen hen - both John Hewitt birds 3) Old Man - greygreen cinnamon wing + Lutino hen.
  3. okay, understood now, the grey goes on top of the other colours. So my results are still correct, if not worded perfectly
  4. I checked the leg, there did not feel like there was a break. There is a fair bit of down so it is hard to note real big colour changes. The toes were not even curling earlier, but the curl a bit now. Hard to explain
  5. there are single factor greys and double factor greys. Single factor, as I understand it, means that the bird has one grey gene and one blue gene. Double factor means that the bird has two grey genes. Now, when you pair a single factor grey to a blue, then you should get 50% greys split blue and 50% blues. When you pair a double factor grey to a blue, you will get 100% greys, but all of them will be single factor greys, split blue.
  6. there does not appear to be any break the foot can move
  7. I have moved Caesar and his two young to the Kindy cage, freeing up another breeding cage. I am going to move the two little new additions, the young ones, into the kindy cage as well. One of Latte and Earl's little grey young ones though he was ready to get out today, he was wrong. i put him back in his box. Dumber and DF have 2 eggs now. None of the new pairs have any eggs yet. Twitch and Kiwi's 4 youngsters look to be coming along very well. It seems that Kestral and Dumb have a DF spangle in their nestbox, but I am concerned about its foot. It has little movement, although it appears to be moving the hip. I am going to treat it like a splayed leg at the moment and see how that goes. I will have to read up on that, I remember roughly how to do it, but this will be a first for me. Shame really, as the little one is very cute.
  8. Pleased to hear that all is progressing well.
  9. Well here are some night pics. More tomorrow in the daytime
  10. we do ship them around australia. We do not ship in and out of Australia due to quarantine restrictions
  11. moved all the breeding pairs today into the breeding room, and all is good. The best news is that Dumber and the DF have their first egg. Hopefully it is one of many to come. to come later
  12. It has been a little while since I updated this thread. I have finally finished. I painted the shed - well the sides that can be seen anyway, then I covered the wire in plastic, leaving enough space on the side the roof overhangs for air circulation, and today I put the budgies in their breeding cages in there. i am pleased with the result, though it is a little smaller than I have envisaged. Might need to sell some stuff now. We will see. to come soon
  13. Not grit, seed. Attempting to encourage the young to pick at seed, it will hopefully make the fledging process easier
  14. New photos for those that want them. Caesar and young Earl and Latter's young Dumd and kestral's young Twitch and Kiwi's young
  15. okay, I bought some breeding pairs, and finally I took some Pair 1 - Light green spangle cock paired to a light green opaline dom pied spangle hen Offspring - purchased earlier Middle girl Pair 2 - Light Green spangle hen paired to Double factor spangle cock Offsrping - purchased earlier 3rd Pair - Light Green Dominant Pied Opaline Hen to Light Green Cinnamon Wing Cock They all look a bit shorter in these shots as the camera angle was very poorly done. I would sack the photographer, but he is also cook, cleaner, income earner, provider, etc. You get the drift. Those are the birds I went to buy. I also bought a Grey Cinnamon Wing Cock I also came home with two little ones that had just fledged, were feeding themselves, but need some love as they are little (note how they are holding hands - or feet) So there you go, purchase photos updated!!!
  16. forgot about them - I will go grab them now
  17. I would use grandpa whilst you can, see how he goes.
  18. i am paying my house off. Already got a mortgage - LOL
  19. He, he, he .... don't tell me you're thinking of moving to a semi rural area with a much bigger back yard - to accommodate the many flights you will need and of course the state of the art Breeding Room you have been fantasizing about! That has been the dream for a little while. Not sure it would eventaute, but a man can dream right?
  20. I am working on that.
  21. I did
  22. 1) Yes, that is fine. The weather on the Central Coast is pretty mild, so you should be fine. Ensure that where you place them is dry, out of the wind and draughts, and gets sunlight at some point during the day, preferably the morning. 2) There are many different types and qualities of budgie seed so hopefully you have a good one. Some less than honest people sell rubbish. I regualrly give my birds spinach, corn, brocolli, carrot and sometimes beetroot. 3) I am not sure on the best brand.
  23. Sky Blue Opaline Cinnamon Wing - definitely not a spangle. The body colour is diluted because of the cinnamon wing and the opaline has had an effect on the wing colour. When hens are out of condition, they often have blue tinges on their cere.
  24. I do not think it is a myth. Think about it, if you take rice and you add water, the rice swells right? Thy myth is that the bird will explode. It will not explode, however uncooked rice has the potential to expand, and if a bird swallows a large portion of it, it will make the birds abdomen swell in an unnatural manner, and this may lead to its death. Feeding rice to birds will nto result in an explosion, but the expansion of rice may lead to serious harm.
  25. Remember as well that rice swells when exposed to liquid. If the first exposure to liquid is saliva as the bird swallow it and then it enters the stomach, you might end with a bird that dies due to a bloated abdomen. This is the reason that hey say not to throw rice at weddings anymore.
