  1. You have to remember not to apply human emotions to the birds. It is not like taking a baby off a human mother. As for how soon, well, eggs are meant to take 18 days to hatch, give or take a day or two, so i would give it another few days - week. As for what you should do, I would remove the nestbox. She has been through a bit, laying 5 eggs, so give her a few days to recover before returning the nestbox. Also make sure you keep the calcium intake up to her in her water. She needs it after layign these five eggs. Have you determined any reason they are not fertile? Is it an old hen cock?Have they bred before? If they are show birds, or birds with thick feathers, do they need to be plucked?
  2. A friend of mine has some, and they are initially hard to distinguish from the cinnamon wing, but when you sit two next to each other, you can see the difference. RIPBudgies sent me some info the other day. I will post in on here when I get home, if it alright with her.
  3. Wonderful pics Kaz. A couple of questions for you: 1) At what age do they go into the kindy cage? 2) At what age/stage of development do you take them out? 3) Roughly, what are the measurements of your kindy cage? 4) How many, roughly do you have in there? The reason I ask this is that yours look younger than mine, I am not sure how soon some of mine can go in the aviary. And I often worry about overcrowding.
  4. I agree with Dean - your egg is perfect. I will try to get a photo later today of a strange shaped egg. It is a small spherical ball - like a marble but smaller.
  5. Some big boofy heads and long masks in that lot Karen. You are breeding some great looking birds. You must be very please. Well done.
  6. Had a very hot day here today, that almost resulted in the loss of one young one in the kindy cage. I was in there giving cooler, fresher water and putting in some baths as well, when i noticed one of Earl and Latte's young suffering what I am calling heat stroke. I picked him up, took him inside. I put him in a cool room, in a cage without box, with some kitchen towel under him. I gave him a drink, and put some water and millet in his cage. Here we are, some 5 hours later, and he looks better. I think he has thrown up, but it is more of the result of what he has gone through. He looks a little fluffed up now so I have put a lamp on him. I am going to put some Sparks in his water to give him a boost. All the others are going well. DF widow has 4 hatchlings from her mating with Dumber(RIP) and there are 2 of thier offspring - the eldest 2 - in with Earl and Latte. The will all be spangle, and some will be DF's. The eldest looks to be a normal spangle, but the second eldest looks to be a DF spangle. We shall see. 6 offspring from this pair though, that is good, especially since losing Dumber(RIP) Earl and Latte also have 2 of their own. They are little ones at this stage. Kiwi and twitch have 7 big eggs. My green pair have 4 eggs. One is tiny and spherical. It think this was the first egg she layed. Like her body was on a practice run. Nothing good can come from it, but I have not removed it. Curious. No more pairs down yet, but hopefully they will be this week.
  7. not buying anything anytime soon. Breeding season, then culling, then buying, in that order.
  8. I put multiple corn cobs on individual metal BBQ skewers and attach them to the side of the cage, sitting the corn end over a branch. They love it. Tip to the wise, be careful with the skewers. I did not think the other day, and slammed the corn onto the cob, as it refused to go. It went on. The skewer proceeded through the corn, through my hand, and although it did not pass out the other side, it was tenting my skin - think pole under the big top at the circus.

Really? I have never removed a shell egg. Mum's often eat the egg, as it increases their calcium. Little ones may chew at the egg. I know I have never heard of it catching on other eggs, and I have never ever removed one.
  10. Sorry to hear this buddy. The heat can be a strain on birds that are already struggling.
  11. Hard to tell by your description. Does the yellow baby have red eyes? If so, she is a lutino, and Dad is split to Ino. If not, I am not sure - I would need a photo...please.
  12. Well said Anne, well said!!
  13. I forgot all about Romeo Jr and Mel - shame on me. Romeo Jr, named after his father, was trying to jump anything and everything since he was old enough. He should relish this opportunity. Very pleased Mel is there too. Marco Paulo - or polo - he is of course your bird. He was a little rescued dude that a guy caught and I went and got him. Great to see. Gwenevieve - daughter of Hugo and Angel - I remember her now. Laurel I remembered. Great to see. Keep us updated. If you have seen my thread, you will know that Earl and Latte are on their second clutch, Cino was not a good mum, and Midori is still waiting his turn.
  14. I do not think you have anything major to worry about. So he has always been like this? It might stem from something that happened to him as a young chick - sometimes plucking and sometimes other chicks nibble on each other, which might possibly have damaged the feathers/spot where these feathers are meant to grow. His beak does seem very long to me. do you trim it? Do you give him calcium blocks on which he can nibble and trim and own beak? Natural perches for the same reason?
  15. Well, my 8 Clearwings and one cock that is split Clearwing are currently flying over the middle of Australia, on their way to Perth to Renee. I can already notice the room in the aviary. Now, about upcoming auctions....hmmmmmmmmm.......
  16. Nice to see Deb. I recognise one of the recessive pieds, but that is it. I always wonder how they are going. Keep us updated.
  17. Good job, and so nice and clean - for now!!!!!!!!
  18. Still waiting on paternity tests before I admit anything Karen, and until then.............oh you mean the birds, yes, they are doing alright. I might need to look at airflow come summer though, or even a small shade sail
  19. Just though I would update in here. I had purchased some wonderful clearwings, but now I have decided against going down that very complicated road, so they are off to Perth again, this time to Renee. They will be missed, but removing 9 birds from the aviary to give them a better happier life where they can produce progeny in the future is always for the best. Plus, it gives me more room for the 09 babies who will be spreading their wings soon enough. Plus I will be setting up my sister's aviary in the next few weeks, so then another 9 or so birds will be mocing over there. I still want to cull a few more birds for space reasons, especially with mroe young ones coming through, so I might post any that are for sale up on here. We will see how that goes.
  20. Thanks Kaz and Splat. I am pleased. I put the ring back on one of Dumber(RIP)'s young today as it had slipped off, and rung another 2. One might slip off tonight or tomorrow, but it is better early than late. I think that Dumber(RIP) and his DF widow have 6 young now, in 2 nests, plus 1 more unhatched egg, and Earl and Latte have 1 recently hatched young one, with 5 eggs possibly fertile. Kiwi and Twitch have about 7 eggs, and 6 look fertile so far. My new pair I put down - the John Hewitt bred greens have 3 eggs, 1 that looks small and two much larger eggs. They look good. I have removed the nestbox from the cinnamon winged male and the dom pied hen as she appears to be eating all the eggs. Perhaps a rest then some time in the aviary might be best for her. Still looking to put some new pairs down tomorrow. Hope to get to it then.
  21. Ozzie never had a tumor when i had him, and as far as I know, you are not feeding him anything that would cause it to develop. Is it possible that some birds just naturally have a predisposition to it?
  22. I think it is just in the genetic makeup of some birds. I know one of the rescue budgies was Punky - the golden faced YF2 cobalt hen I gave you. She was always like that. Are the others related or from any you got from me? It is funny as I have never had that with Show Types, only with pet types
  23. This looks awesome. I am impressed. Once you get the slab done, you really do feel that you are getting somewhere. All systems go now.
  24. If you remember what Dumb and Dumber were like, they had the length but were yet to fill out, and it was not until the beginning of 2009, as in April, that they really could be classed as fully developed. They are/were 07 rung birds, so it took them a good 1 1/2 years to fully develop. When I purchased them, they were more about the length.
  25. They are all gorgeous! And that photo is adorable!! I am very pleased that he looks like his Dad. I hope he fills out like his dad did as well.
